An anonymous contributor sent us the following interesting file – a scan of a monthly Real Madrid magazine published shortly after Saints played at the Bernabeu in May 1971.

Headline: Real Madrid defeat St Johnstone - Third in the Scottish League

Not that anyone at WAP Towers speaks much in the way of Spanish, but Google’s online translation service tells us that it is a match report, published in July 1971 – around six weeks after the match – in a magazine featuring Real’s 1971 Cup Winner’s Cup final team, which lost a replay 2-1 against Chelsea in Athens.

It describes Gordon Whitelaw opening the scoring for Saints “with a powerful shot from outside the area that slipped into the top corner” – or so we believe…
