Ormond Saints 4 208 Saints 2

Ormond Saints today entertained fellow St. Johnstone Supporters team 208 Saints at The McDiarmid Park astroturf in what was the first ever meeting between the sides. Nine of the squad from the 4-3 defeat to Queens Park in late August were present for today.

As the mid afternoon sun roasted the players the game started a little scrappy and neither side looked dominant in the early stages. The 208 took the lead though around the 20 minute mark and it was a great finish from distance, which looped over Strawson in our goal.

Overall the team were playing well enough though by this stage and before the half was out we were level thanks to Steve McPhee, who calmly finished off a flowing move from inside the box.

Into the second period and again the 208 opened the scoring and it looked as if they could go on and score more as they dominated the opening 15 minutes or so. Manager Gav Stewart then made a flurry of substitutions with Gav Fullarton, Andy Muir and Gav McDonald re - entering the fray after their 'wee breaks' and it payed immediate dividends as the game started to turn in our favour. Gav McDonald, briefly employed up front, set Ross Kaylor away to grab the equaliser and then thought he had put us ahead, but to his dismay he was the width of the Tay offside and the referee correctly said no goal.

Within a few minutes there was another re - jig with Gav McDonald heading back to centre back as Colin Heller came off knackered and Willie Fernie once again went up front. Again it was credit to the gaffer for making the right calls at vital times, with us taking control and looking safe at the back. As it was Stuart McDonald, who was outstanding at centre back, put us 3-2 up with 15 minutes left heading home after a corner had been only partially cleared. From here we never really looked like throwing away the lead, as we did in our last two outings, and with the last kick of the ball captain Mark Smith slung in a cross from the right which evaded everyone, including the 208 keeper and that sealed a win that was probably deserved over the 90 min

Ormond saints: Ian Strawson, Steve Laing, Eric Laing, Mark Smith(c) Gav McDonald, Stuart McDonald, Gav Fullerton, Andy Muir, Willie Fernie, Ross Kaylor, Cal Kennedy. Subs: Steve McPhee, Grant Morrison, Colin Heller, Andy Lietch and Alan Kelman (not used)

Opposition Man Of The Match: Steve McPhee
Managers Man of the Match : Stuart McDonald

Fantastic result today, and i was very happy with the performance and the attitude of players over all, to have 16 players turn up at the time asked would have been unthinkable a year or so ago and well done for to all for that.
On the down side the turn out at the pub was poor and if we want to have a sponsor much longer then this really must improve, Davie just yesterday handed over cheque for a hundred and fifty quid for the new yellow strips, and if we want stuff like this to carry on
WE MUST SUPPORT HIM by attending the pub after the home games , even for an hour.
I am aware that some players were working and this can not be helped as in the same with those playing fives later, but i have noticed a pattern of the same players going to the pub and those THAT RARLEY OR NEVER GO..We play Queens Park in a fortnight and i will be extemley embarresed if we dont have a good turn out in the pub that day, please remember that !!!IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT TURNING UP FOR A GAME AND GOING HOMESponshorship is vital to our proress and the running of a football team and i would ask you all to remember that.

Good game lads, well played, it was enjoyable to watch. Have to disagree with the MOM though, I though Strawson had a blinding game... closely followed by Steve and Stuart of course!

Great win against a team filled with very good players, was hard going in the heat, and we probably had the edge with being more of a unit than they were perhaps.

One thing to note is that when we stopped trying to paint pretty little pictures in our own half we never looked in any real danger.
