Time to start the countdown.

I'm hoping for any victory. Ideally we'll show more clinical finishing and less rookie mistakes in the wide areas. Stenny have nowt to lose and everything to gain so the pressure is on us to deliver.

Team lines will be similar (if not identical) to Glenavon. Assuming Jody is fine, he'll start ahead of his deputy, Mr Sheerin

Swap Millar with Davidson, and that's the 11 I'd like to see us going with. As long as we win, and the side looking fitter than this time last year, and I don't think we can ask for too much more. Very excited already and we're still a week away!

No Liam Craig in your 18 ??? No Swankie??? ( I suppose they all can't get a game..) I quite like that squad though, but I would have Sammy on from the start and Savo on the bench. It really depends who's fit and who's not and if we sign Morais..I'll have a look at it later in the week...

is it not 7 subs including 3 under 21???

Kyle
25-07-2009, 03:19 PM
Na the cup games are 5 subs, so it's going to be hardlines on the players that miss out.

It's a thing of beauty having as strong a squad as we do... You can swap it all around and the squad will still look just as strong

I'll be amazed if Craig is completely left out, and I also very much doubt Davidson is being viewed as a wide player. I reckon Del's team (assuming people are fit) will be something like...

It is good to have Craig available to play left mid, we lacked a hell of a lot of width, so I would reckon he is almost assured a palce.

He's not a left sided player, he's a left footed central midfielder.

I think if Morais plays we'll play more of 4-3-1-2, with Davidson on the right hand side of the 3. If he's being used as an out and out winger then I'd say your correct. He might do ok on the right, but I believe he's much more natural in the centre.

You gotta have Davidson in there Mike.. Having seen him twice so far, I think the boys the real deal.. no idea who would make way for him though.. The defence and the attack are straight forward enough to pick but the midfield is a fecking nightmare...

Millar, Craig, Hardie, Sheerin, Morais (maybe) Swankie,Morris, Davidson, Moon,

9 players, all of whom could do the job..

We seem a bit short of bodies in defence though which is more worrying...Irvine,Rusty,Caff,Grainger,Anderson and Gartland.. Only takes two injuries/suspensions and we are in deep shite at the back with only the young lads ( Sullivan and Lindsay) as cover..( I just remembered Hairy Pie Dave MacKay so maybe I am probably worrying over nothing)..

He played on the right wing against Rushden & Diamonds. I reckon though that he's being viewed for more than one position, depending on the opposition/tactics, and could easily be seen playing on either wing, behind the strikers or as a striker himself. Also, I think we should probably bear in mind that Del hasn't really been one to stick with a settled team since he's arrived: I reckon we'll see quite a bit of tweaking with line-ups, formations and players' positions this season. Not sure I agree that that's a good thing, but it certainly seems to be Del's favoured approach.

Not seen Davidson yet, but I've not seen any bad comments about him. For that reason, I would go with this team as well.

Need to see him with my own eyes before I say he deserves a place ahead of Hardie, who I believe IS SPL class. If Davidson IS better, I will hold my hands and say I was wrong!

Who is Davidson really going to replace in midfield? Morris? No way. Moon? I doubt it. Morais? Nope. I suspect Morais will play wide left, Davidson wide right, Moon and Morris in the middle. If not that then 4-3-3 with Moon, Morris and Davidson all in the centre, Morais right wing and maybe Swanks left wing, with Savo up front?

Reignman

I've not been able to catch any preseason game as yet but my team for Stenny would be:

Main
Irvine Dinky Caff Danger
Morais Morris Craig Samuel
Savo Deuchar

Smith, Mackay, Davidson, Sheerin, Millar

We all seem to be fairly agreed on the front 2 and back 5 especially picks itself. Wouldn't be my team every week but against weaker opposition at this stage we should be giving the 'luxury' players (Samuel & Morais, if he signs) a good run out to create lots of chances for the strikers and hopefully get them a goal each to set them up nicely for the season. There will be plenty of times this season where we'll need a bit more of a solid midfield so we should be giving these guys a game when we can.

iv got a funny feeling that del favours a rusty/garts pairing after watching recent friendlies. he seems a big fan of this 4-3-3 system as well and I wouldnt mind seeing us play this way to see how it works for us in a competitive fixture

with moon staying back with jacko an peaso then there's no chance of him making the bench against stenny. im not sure what stage these3 are at but miles behind the guys who have had a full pre season.

McInnes has said he's never even heard of Scott Malone!

I guess tomorrow night might have some sort of bearing on things but whilst I don't think McInnes will yet know his strongest side, we are much further on than we were this time last season, when I doubt any of us could have been confident about naming two or three of the side.

I've only seen him once (and the highlights from Ayr) but I was quite impressed by Graeme Smith. He didn't have a lot to do against Distillery but looked confident. Evening Telegraph (http://www.eveningtelegraph.co.uk/output/2009/07/27/story13520492t0.shtm) tonight has him down as having a thigh strain though.

I think the full backs pick themselves at the moment but not sure which way he'll go with the centre backs. He's given Gartland a lot of football pre-season.

Midfield is tough to call as well. You'd think Morris will play (if fit) and I still think Murray Davidson could end up as one of our best players next season. Morais will start too so then probably Craig and Millar fighting over the last space.

He's tended to pair Deuchar and Milne together a lot, so it would maybe seem strange to break that up if he's going to play 4-4-2. Of course if he wants to play 4-3-3 then Swankie maybe comes into the reckoning and Samuel would probably be the main striker.

Looking forward to the game though and hopeful that McInnes will pick a side capable of doing the job. I've no idea if there is an U21 rule in the Co-Op Cup but if there is then one of the U19s will need to join Murray Davidson in the squad.

Yeah, I'm thrilled to announce that I was wrong about him. He looks okay. Certainly not good enough to start, but arguably good enough to replace Alzo in due course.

I'm awfy worried that he tries to play Rusty and Garters together, it hussnae worked, it winnae work.

Ando and Garters would be my pick, but we all know that won't happen. Caff certainly brought calm to Rusty, Garters doesn't. The thing about centre-backs is that the total product is more important that the sum of the parts. It has to be one from Garts and Rusty. I hope Del understands this.

Given that he has introduced the Captains armband (following many moans from me!), he can't drop Rusty, which is a worry given his pre-season form...

At St Andrews and Ayr, Garts was taking charge at set-pieces (Morris was helping at Ayr) while Rusty became Mr Silent. Was it the same in Ireland?

I dont want to just try and pick a list of the players I want to see play against Stenny. Be honest, most folk just skim over peoples team selections and consider their own.

Thing is, we could almost make 2 complete teams. One built of consistent if unspectacular performers and one built of impact players who really shine, if they shine. It'll be interesting to see the mix of these players in the cup game.

May as well play the full strength team with the big kick-off still two weeks away. Obviously Morris and Ruti out and I'd have Moon and Gartland in instead. Wish more folk would agree. Too many supporters looking to the Motherwell game as the start of the season.

Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for the Motherwell game but at the end of the day this is our first competitive game of the season and the team needs our support from start to finish this season.

All due respect to them, I'm sure it will be quite a close game but I feel quite confident that a couple of goals early on will finish them off.

I am indeed.

I don't think this'll be an easy game, their reserve team could've finished us of last year in the first half hour, don't be fooled by the scoreline. One guy was tearing us a new one until he had a collision with the post and had to go off.

The only difference between the two sides was the fitness between a fulltime and part time team. They tired in the last 20 mins and thats when we really hurt them.

They've already played a competitive game too, I wouldn't underestimate how big a part that could play

Wouldn't surprise me if McLean started, but I suspect Alzo will. Millar's out, so Davidson will probably start as Moon won't be risked nor will Morris. With Rusty injured, and with no Hards I suspect our lineup will be as follows;

--------------------Main---------------------
--Irvine-----Caff----------Gartland---Grainger-
----------------------------------------------
----Swankie--------Davidson----------Craig----

----Morais---------Deuchar----------Samuel---

We're a bit thin in the centre, which is a little unusual for us. Probably a few U19s on the bench and McLean reserve keeper.

I know it's hard to believe, but it's official organised stuff! Even though Perthshire have folded, there's still quite a few other teams in Perth and around Perthshire. I just play occassionally to help out my old man's team.

More importantly though, is it raining yet in Perth!?!

Buzz!!!!!!

I think it's fair to say I'm quite looking forward to this game today. I would like to see us line up:

Main

Irvine Caff Gartland Grainger

Davidson Craig Sheerin

Swankie Deuchar Morais

No Savo or Morris because of the artificial, and they have chocolate knees. I'd like to see Morais and Swankie playing off Deuchar and creating havoc between their midfield and defence. No Sammy in the starting 11 because he would be a fantastic player to bring on later against a part time team.

Del likes his 4-3-3 and considering the circumstances of this game, I think we'll be stronger with this 11. If possible, I'd keep both Morris and Savo out the squad as the last thing we need is one of them picking up a long term injury at this stage, especially with Rutkiewicz already injured. I know that leaves short of a midfield change, but Irvine has played in there and been ok before.

I'd have Samuel, Anderson, Mackay, Reynolds and Mclean on the bench.

Happy days. A nice, laid back atmosphere (read - quiet as Hell, but we were winning so it didn't really matter), Alzo had some excellent banter with the fans, a very nice wee stadium, some good football and some excellent highlights. A couple of Main's saves were fantastic, and Savo's goal was phenomenal. Defence looked reasonably sturdy - Garters' touch was very poor at time but he looked otherwise solid. How was Morris MoM? Davidson was far more deserving. Tackled and passed well, looks a tidy wee player.

I give that 8/10. Fairly good passing football at times, clinical finishing and some superb stops from Main.

The preparation was woeful and the players individual performances at Cowdenbeath were a disagrce to the SPL. However, today the real ball came out and we delievered in style.

Very good performance against a very gritty Stenny. Score line definately flattered us, but some of the passing and finishing was clinical and we didn't look too bad at the back. Plenty of work required over the next two weeks and there simply must be more closed doors games against strong opposition.

Further more a charity of Mike's choice is £5.00 better off:oops:

Ok 101 - RSPCA would benefit from your kind donation. You should have more faith!

Happy man tonight. I didnt think we were particualrly excellent, we did exactly what we needed to do and a good solid way to start off this season.

Very clinical, could have been more though with Morais and Craigs chances in first half. Having the Doc in there starting exactly where he left was great to see. Derek who?

Irvine seemed to struggle with the pitch the most, caught unexpected with the bounce a couple of times. if he was carrying a knock then that may explain it. I also missed Savo's withdrawal as I was watching my youngest at the time.

What about those toilets? I was wreching when I went in before full time, absolutely boggin. Also glad that it was all one way in first half as I spent 25 mins in the queue for Pie Stand.......

Off out on the booze now - yeeehaaaa!

Better to have a slow build up culminating in hitting the ground running when the season starts LIKE TODAY and NOT Cowdenbeath where the windy conditions and tight pitch made it difficult to look good.

Braw day, the banter between the fans and the players in the warmup was superb.

Started a wee bit off the pace but probably tho be expected that Stenny would come out the faster but setled down and played some good stuff. Did not want half time to come we were playing that nicely.

Nice to see some wing wizadry from Flip flop Mories and some crosses actually from the byline.

All in all a good start and hopefully a good season ahead

Exactly, though pre seson was pretty spot on this year, having this competitive game followed by the Burnley game is a good test to get the sharpness ready for the European assault.

For wat its worth ?Thought we played pretty well for the majority of the Cowden game, hell for the first 10-15mins Cowden never touched the ball

Slow out the traps in both halfs but after 15mins settled into some good football.
Thought the shape and balance of the team looked excellent with both Craig and Morais backed up with Grainger and Irvine (although he had one of his poorer games).

Davidson looks a bit raw in the middle and I feel when others are fit he will make way.

All in all - a very good start and more positives than negatives.

Took until the first goal to really settle but never looked back after that. Played on a tricky pitch which was made faster by the mid-half monsoon.

New signings all played well. Grainger saw alot of the ball in the first half and looked good. Morais always looked dangerous and willing. Davidson strolled through the game. Dr Goals scored twice.

You can only beat who's in front of you and this result, without getting too carried away, will give the team's morale a boost.

He has some skill but he's certainly not SPL material. Interesting to see how Del brings him on. he's got a three year deal so a loan move might be an option. Not sure how happy GB would be about that though...

Disagree with that, Mike. I thought he did exactly what Mooner would do and he took a card in exchange for preventing a clear strike on goal. Debatable whether he should have done so at 3-o (or was it 4-0) but it is encouraging that he puts the team before himself.

There were two Saints players together at the time of the challenge. I must admit that part of my defence of Muzza's tackle is the fact that I was screaming for someone to "snap that wee nyaff!" That said, I'm awfy glad that Savo ignored me when I was shouting, "play it wide"

I thought it was a ridiculous challenge to be honest. The guy didn't have a clear strike on goal, he still had the two centre-backs to get past first. He had cut in off the right wing and Liam Craig was chasing him, then when Craig was almost in a position to put in a challenge Davidson came flying in from such an angle that it was difficult for him to have possibly won the ball. A clear booking.

Given that we were comfortably in charge of the match and it wasn't that dangerous a position, it wasn't a tackle that needed to be made. I'm sure that with experience his decision-making will improve though.

I think he was gonna hit it though, he wsn't worrying about any defenders. Liam was dithering and Muzza decided to take charge. I agree that the scoreline made the challenge daft, but I like the selflessness of his actions and I am encouraged that we would do the same at 0-0 and 89 minutes against the Old Scum.

Del will likely accept those type of yellow cards. Totally different from a petulant yellow.

What date is the next round scheduled for?
The SPL website has all the key dates for the season here (http://www.scotprem.com/content/default.asp?page=s49).

Next round is scheduled for 25th/26th of this month and the draw, as has maybe been mentioned, is on Tuesday. We'll be seeded again, so will avoid the other SPL sides in the hat and the top First Division sides from last season.

I thought we got the job done yesterday without being outstanding and Stenny contributed to their own downfall in part with some shocking defending and goalkeeping. They actually started brightly and we were struggling to find our rhythm but the excellent first goal, followed so quickly by the second, killed them. They came out a bit brighter at the start of the second half but the third goal ended the contest and the game started to have a bit of a pre-season feel to it.

One good save from Alan Main and one outstanding save and he dealt well with some really tricky deliveries from out wide. Danny Grainger should do a job at left back and Morais will provide a spark in midfield. Good to see all the strikers get amongst the goals but still feel, and believe, we'll bring another forward in before the season starts. Wonder if Coyle will lend us Jay Rodriguez? I certainly don't see many players kicking about in Scotland that are affordable and would improve us.

Healthy Saints support as well, probably outnumbered the home support. Hopefully we can carry that into the new season.

It was a 'uman rights thing. Was told off like a naughty schoolboy for smoking "in the wrong area"..Except the right area seemed to be right next to the wrong one. Only difference was that from the right one I could not quite see the far away goal.. I was seeking clarification and reasoning behind this strange policy. I argued that if they did allow smoking ( which they did) that as both areas were uncovered and about 10 feet apart, there was absolutely NO difference if I stood at point A or point B. Having spoken with young steward, I moved on to supervisor steward and finally bully boy( "I'll throw you out if you want) steward.. I threw in a rant about no signage which in itself is an offence and lack of a "coherent policy statement setting out the fundamental application of the smoking provision at the ground" ( this went a little over bully boys head and he responded with" if your no happy I'll put you out" At that point I decided I'd had my monies worth and retreated to the official smoking zone to join the rest of my fellow addicts. i actually thought the stewarding on Saturday was very poor, we arrived and leaned against the wall, just before you started kicking off at the stewards, we were told to shift away from it, which we did, before the end of the game there were kids sitting on it, after we were pointed at by some stewards from the home stand for smoking, i approached the local plod for clarification of the designated smoking zone and was told it was by the gate, fine. Signage isnt a big thing for Stenny, apart from their temporary £12 signs of course, which were gone by the time we left the ground. All in all the "matchday experience" at Ochilview isnt to be recommended to anyone, having travelled 420 miles with 3 friends, 2 of which had never been to a Scottish match, it was a disgrace, verging on embarrassment.

What a goal by Milne. I never realised he travelled with the ball before striking it. No doubt the goalie hardly covered himself in glory but from behind the goal, you could see it was a hard one to save.

Outstanding stop from Main from the FK too, although again one you appreciated more seeing it from behind the goal and getting a better view of the deflection.

Nice build up to the fifth but from Stenny's point of view, the third and fourth in particular were far too easy.

Looked a healthy support as well.
