As I mentioned on the Scotspurs Sevens thread, I was on the phone with Ormond boy.
He mentioned that he was having a word with the new manger of Mathers, Cameron. He was saying that he noticed we are often in there before and after games and was more than happy to put on a free spread of sandwiches and sausage rolls etc before & or after matches if it was to be a regular thing, which I imagine it will be.
No bad eh? Anyway all he asked was that if one of us popped down one day or night just to accept his kind offer and make some sort of arrangment.
As I stay at the other end of the city I was wondering if there was anyone a bit more local to the pub that would like to do this? If not I am more than happy to take charge of the situation.

Thats a very kind offer! Good to see we have been seen in good light to warrant free food! Either that, or its the fact he wants to try and sober us all up a bit after the last few visits!
However, im not 100% convinced that we should take him up on his offer. Now, i enjoy a pint in Mathers and a free sausage roll or 2 as much as anyone (maybe more than most going by the size of me ) but i'm a bit concerned about turning Mathers into a "football pub" as it were. At the moment, its a nice wee bar thats central, has decent beer and a decent atmosphere - although we all embrace this, with good behavior, it has the potential to turn sour, particularly now that we are in the SPL and if opposition fans take a disliking to Saints and their fans after a match. I for one wouldnt feel too clever if they had a window panned in by the Hibs casuals, just because we were having a pint there. Im not saying we would cause any trouble, but i think there is the potential for trouble to find us, in particular after an Edinburgh match...
Having said that, i think it would be great to take him up on the offer for the odd game, (perhaps a pre-planned away game) but i dont think we should except for EVERY week and particularly before/ after the games in Edinburgh.
Personally speaking, i'm not going to be in Mathers every week before and/ or after the football, and i would question the number of saints fans that would be. Granted there will be a few but i can only see a decent crowd of folk which would warrant free food after a big away game. if you look at the number of saints fans in Mathers last year (at any one time), there werent many except after the bus to Dundee - do you think he would realistically put on a spread of food for half a dozen of us? Im not so sure.
Sorry to put a downer on things, its just my opinion tho!

Everyones intitled to there opinion mate. You do raise some very good points though. I had never really thought of any trouble coming from it although you never can tell with football.
I do think as you suggested, we should take him up on the odd match though. Big games at home, Utd away etc...

What a nice man-however I agree with St Tommy about every game. A pre-planned meeting about upcoming travel plans etc.would be a winner with me although I am not a regular in Mathers.

Agreed, I don't think we're their in big enough numbers to do this regularly. Perhaps a couple of pre-organised times a year, but not every other week

I work across from Mathers and am in for a pint almost every Friday lunchtime at least - had no idea this was the Edinburgh saints' regular haunt! Room for one more in the new season?

Just to confirm, it's the Broughton Street Mathers, not the West End one!

I will hopefully be joining you lot at some points throughout the season. Can't make it to every game due to money issues but will certainly going to a fair few.

Good man, I think we all tend to be in the same boat from time to time living through here. It aint cheap supporting your team from another city.

Ah, the Reverend! You were being sounded out as coming to join up with us by Ghostie at the Cowdenbeath match!
