As much as I liked the 4-3-3 to start today I think we will go safe and play 4-4-2.
Defence picks itself. (but was impressed by MacKay today)
I come unstuck at my preffered midfield. 3 of the 4 has to come from Morais (looking like a great acquisition), Craig and of course, Jody. Toss up between Hardie, Moon and Davidson - I think Hardie may just get the nod.
Either Savo or Samuel to be paired with the Good Doc. Think Del will go with Savo, but as I have said before, I am expecting big things from Samuel this year.

An interesting variation on todays 433 might be:
Main
Irvine Caff Garters Grainger
Davidson Morris Craig
Samuel Deuchar Morais
although I don't think he'll do it. I think he'll go with:
Main
Irvine Caff Garters Grainger
Morais Davidson Morris Craig
Savo Deuchar
I'd like to see Sammy instead of Savo but as said before, I think he'll go with Savo to partner Doc.

I'm very much looking forward to this. I thought the 4-3-3 looked really exciting today but there is no chance we will go with that on Saturday. Davidson and Grainger both look likr excellent additions from the three pre-season games I have seen.
I would go with:
Main
Irvine McCaffrey Gartland Grainger
Morais Morris Davidson Craig
Savo Deuchar
The less time Gartland spends with the ball at his feet the better though. He looked really good in the challenge today but still looked rubbish with the ball at his feet. T'was a close call between Savo and Sammy to start up front for me but you have to go with the top goal scorer from last season.

Yes.. And as such he might find a place on the bench if the rule is not the highlighted bit...

Right, nothing to fear. based on our display.....yesterday, I'd name this lot;
Alzo
MacKay McCaff Gartland Grainger
Morais Davidson[U21] Morris Craig
Savo Sammy
Subbies:
McLean, Doc, Irvine, Moon, Irvine, May [U21], Lindsay [U21]
Grunt in midfield comes from Morris and Davidson (jings he's a lanky lad!), flair comes from the wing in Morais, and a nice crosser in Craig on the left. A very solid defense on the preseason displays, and a proven front 2.
Our squad is looking very, very nice.
Bear in mind the Well midfield is very young, and thus very nippy. So we'd need four to ensure we're not defensively left exposed to their pace. Burnley's midfield wasn't the quickest (Eagles aside) so putting 3 in the middle/up front worked relatively well.
Note: I'm mildly pissed. :)
SaintSam1884
09-08-2009, 10:12 AM
Interesting that MacKay has had such an immediate impact. I think most of us would've expected him to come and play second fiddle to Irvine but from what I have seen so far, I think he is more solid defensively than Irvine. He excelled in that sense yesterday. However, Irvine is better at getting forward. McInnes has certainly left himself with a bit of a headache, but I suppose he didn't sign any player to sit on the sidelines. I am going to go for the defensively better option. I'd like to see the riveting 4-5-1/4-3-3 option we started with yesterday start this game:
Main
MacKay Gartland McCaffrey Grainger
Davidson Morris Craig
Swankie Samuel Morais
However, I suspect Del will go 4-4-2 in which case I would have Morais as the fourth man in midfield, with Deuchar and Milne up front.

It's a good thing this headache McInnes has because it means he has fulfilled an objective by adding to a squad with strength and depth. Although come next saturday I think Del will have a full blown migraine :)... good

No way will the Ormond Stand be open, I for one would be gutted to see away fans sitting in it during every home game. I must say mate neither did I. If anything I'm Swankie's biggest critic. His lack of fight and what I saw as an apparent lack of ability meant I wanted to see him move on during the summer.
The first 45 minutes against Burnley though, proved to me Swankie IS a player and in the right formation could be a revelation.
I have to admit I don't yet believe Swankie will be consistent enough or has the mental strength to take the SPL by storm, but after the game against Burnley, I think he should be giving the chance to prove us wrong.
Whether McInnes plays him or not I will understand his reasoning. A 4-3-3 certainly suits Swankie better.

We're nearly there now.. I am very much looking forward to tomorrow afternoon and hopefully a great game with a Saints win getting our season off to a flyer. I am sure it will be a tough game and if we are not fully concentrated and committed to the task in hand then we will get turned over. The great flowing football of the 1st half last week against Burnley was not only exciting, but looked effective as well. I admit that I know nothing about Motherwells players and as such for me that might be a worry but I am sure that Del and his staff will have had a long and thorough look and identified potential areas of difficulty. A crowd of 5500-6000 would be braw and would generate a brilliant atmosphere.( I would just say to everyone,, don't go turning up at 2.45pm and expect to be in the stadium for kick-off. You may end up disappointed. You have been warned )

The thoughts of Billy Dodds:
St Johnstone v Motherwell
It's a big welcome back to the Premier League for St Johnstone with a home game.
They couldn't ask for a better match, against a team that they're capable of taking points off. It'll be a hard-fought game, but I think St Johnstone will play an open game in a bid to take three points.
Motherwell look to have found a good manager and they've got a lot of hungry young players who will make it difficult for teams all season.
I can't see this match being high-scoring, and it'll probably end in a draw. A lot of Motherwell's big-name players are gone now, so they'll be relying on experience from guys like Stephen Craigan to get them through matches.
It'll also be a test for the SPL's two new managers and I think they'll both be happy to go home with a draw.
Prediction: 1-1

Comments from the BBC website
Like Accies, promoted St Johnstone are not weighed down by the financial burden facing most other SPL clubs.
Recent cup exploits showed they could already compete with the top-flight and, strengthened by the likes of doctor Kenny Deuchar this summer, look like heading for a healthy mid-table finish.

I will admit I was one of the guys that was a bit disillusioned with things before the pre-season games started, frustrated at the lack of signings, collapse of Setanta etc... but that's all gone now and seven long years come to an end tomorrow. Getting relegated wasn't a surprise or indeed a huge blow as there was a freshness to visiting new First Division grounds but that itself had grown tiresome in recent years and it's great to be back in the SPL.
At this stage I'm confident we can do quite well, although tomorrow will be the first real indication of whether that's the case. Maybe McInnes was playing it safe by saying the bottom six was our league but even though we can't compete financially with the better sides, I see no reason why we can't, as I say, have a good season.
Motherwell have played these six competitive matches and Gannon has chopped aand changed a bit but he's probably not been afforded the same level of experiementation as he'd have liked, especially being new in the job. They are very light up front and the back in terms of cover, although obviously have decent first choice players in those areas. This new signing Hateley might be right back but if not then that's definitely an area where we can get some joy. On the flip side, the lad Slane is supposedly to be flying down the left hand side for them.
I'll trust McInnes go with the right side but it must be hard decision to choose between the 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 formation. I think probably seven of the starters are nailed on with the tougher choices coming between Irvine and Mackay and right back then which two out of Deuchar, Milne, Samuel and Swankie play.
Really hope there's a big home crowd but at the same time that things aren't shambles as they were in the Morton game. We can't afford to keep having that level of organisation and then expect folk to come back the next week.

I think that this is the likely team that will start tomorrow. Perhaps McKay for Irvine and Sammy up front, the only possible changes. Whichever way they go a win would be a great boost to start the season.
ps Did the turnstyles not cope well enough [with one or two exceptions] when we were previously up in the premier? I seem to remember leaving the 208 regularly about 1440 and getting in before kick off, even without a season ticket or maybe its my memory that is going.:?:

It all depends how many people do this.. If a 1000 people turn up after 2.40pm then it is unlikely unless you are a ST holder that you will (a) you will get in much before 3pm and more importantly(b) will get the seat/seats that you want...

Good Luck to the lads today and for the Season ahead, Genuinly feel we have nothing to fear, forgetting the Old Firm there is no-one in this league that we should fear, on our day we can take something off all of them and I predict mid-table easily!!
Lets get behind the lads and support them as only we can...
Come on you Saints!!!!!
PS - There is a banging noise up here in Aberdeen just now, could it be the fans that left early erecting the gallows outside Pittodrie for Mr McGhee!!! mmmmmm!!!...Seriously though, are we scared of teams like Aberdeen??? I think not!!
Edited - We shouldnt fear the Old Firm either by the way, we can take points off them too!!!...But we are expected to lose to them so who cares if we do, we will get enough points off the rest to have a good season!!...Who cares about the Old Firm!!! Who would miss them!!

decent start - i,d have taken a point before kick off - good to see Hamilton and St Mirren getting beat as well, according to Pat Nevin it was an excellent game, i,ve found Alba now and cant wait to see it later, special mention for Murray Davidson on the Sportsound round up as well - man of the match apparently, that augurs well for the future.
