View Full Version : Question - Tannoy Man

I apologise in advance if this has been previously mentioned in another thread...

However, I do have to question why the tannoy man (who I believe posts here?) speaks over the tannoy when there is a stopage in play?

I don't quite see the point if it's not an emergency.

Kevin

No it's not an emergency Sam but sometimes it is the only time I can pass a message over to everyone in the ground as opposed to the very few before the match and the limited numbers at half-time. Also if nothing is happening on the pitch...

I think you will find several announcers do this but. unlike the D****e one, I never play music, not even derogatory music!!

I dont see the problem about passing messages over the tannoy when play has stopped. As kevin says he doesnt play music. I would however like to ask kevin if he is aware that noboby can actually hear his messages in the East Stand. It has been like this for ages now and is it not time something was done. I am not sure if this is the same everywhere in the East stand but its certanly a problem where i sit (right in the middle).

I can hear him fine - at the South end - or far right side of the East stand.

So its just me that cannae hear that clearly. That les ma hey go song was something stuart cosgrove and tam cowan made up on off the ball on radio scotland. Its all place names made into a song and story...........Where did les ma hey go.......he went to kill a crankie......and then drank some buckie.....goes something like that........Honestly did nobody else have trouble hearing the tannoy then.

As Lew has pointed out. it is the OTB song "Where Did Lesmahagow" that I played a tht e start of half-time.

If you mean what was I saying then that was a birthday request for a 4 year old girl, who heard it very clearly. Oh yes, and also details about the Drew Rutherford night at the 208.

So much crap eh???? :?

I hear the announcements OK as they a clear & consice. Its when you do your DJ bit that I don`t hear clearly.

Hmm, that sounds like the spakers could be blocked or dirty. I am hoping that they will get cleaned in the new year so we will see then.

Sorry I snapped, had a hard couple of days

We had many discussions about the tannoy on the old forum and Kevin and his predecessor (I've forgotten his name, but him that sodded off to the States) have said that the only way the system will be improved is if we are promoted. I think Kevin does a great job bearing in mind the limitations of the current system which is clearly in need of an overhaul. In some places you can hear fine and in others virtually nothing. This post, however, is dangerously close to veering off topic as it's supposed to be about Kevin interjecting during stoppages in play. My only criticism of this is that he never tells the ref to f*** off. Get it sorted mate!!

Kevin there is one thing I'd like you to do as the McDiarmid park tannoy man.

When you are announcing injury time could you please say "there are x minutes, thats x minutes of injury time to be played".

Currently you say "there will be x minutes of playing time".

Does this not sound a bit daft too you? I mean I'm being asinine and I know what you mean it just sounds tacky and unprofessional saying "playing time" instead of "injury time".

ryangordon86
04-11-2010, 11:48 AM
Ah! But it's not injury time!!

It's time added on for substitutions, injuries and any other substantial stop in play!

Edstar101
04-11-2010, 12:21 PM
Perhaps 'injury time' could be a period where you are allowed to inflict as many 'injuries' on the other team as possible....that would make things interesting! (and we would need MMM back)

For informaiton, it is NOT injury time, it is time added on by the referee and can be for any reason he wishes, it is also not a definitive amount of time which is why the script sayds "The fourth official has indicated is/there are at least X minute(s) of playing time".

This is to allow for free-kicks/penalties/scoring copportunities in the dying seconds or injuries during the time added on and therefore cannot be stated "There are X minutes of injury time" as that is not correct or accurate.

As for being unprofessional, if yuo hear any announcer saying it the way you suggest then that IS unprofessional as we are all told what to say!!

Do they not tell yu to use the word additional in there anywhere? I think that is what the poster was trying to get at.

No, because it is not additional time but time that is being made up within the 45 minutes allowed.

To explain: If the referee stops the game for a lenght of time (other than a few seconds) he will note the amount of time he has lost and it will be deemed to be part of the playing time. There is no time added on just time made up to ensiure the 45 minutes are played.

Chopper where are you when I need support??????

saint sid
04-11-2010, 01:26 PM
can you expand on the x amount of added time.
As in - if saints are behind or chasing a win, you could say "there is ONLY x amount of minuted added, which i find bizzare" to give the ref a guilt-trip so`s he adds more on!

Or- if we are, backs against the wall, protecting a win/draw, you could say something like- "i cant BELIEVE there is x amount of minutes added on, the 4th official must be pissed" so`s the ref blows his whistle straight away

or something along those lines, if you take this idea on board, instant stardom becons and there will be a place in st johnstone folklore forever for you:wink:

So it's discrepancy time then:laugh:
So you should now say "the fourth official has indicated x discrepancy time to make up for the time lost due to players getting injured in the........."
Nah, just stick to what you were saying before

Kevin.

Please please, please say additional or extra or injury or added-on or appended or spare or supplementary. Seconadry time, dependent time, reserve time, over and above time.

Pick one of those words, whichever one sounds nicest.

Just please stop saying "playing time". You don't even say "added playing time". Just "playing time" and everytime I hear it I cringe because it sounds childish and moronic and as if the announcer doesn't know the time quota of a football match.

Can you understand what I'm saying?

Yes, you are saying you do not understand why I say what I do from the script we are given to announce the amount of playing time left on the clock.

Read my lips:

"THERE IS NO ADDED TIME IT IS TIME THAT HAS BEEN ACCRUED DURING THE CURRENT HALF OF THE MATCH AND INDICATES AT THE END OF THE STATUTORY CLOCK RUNNING DOWN HOW MANY MINUTES OF PLAYING TIME ARE LEFT"

It is not rocket science and I am sorry it makes you cringe, but that is what we read out as it is the amount of playing time left, nothing else, simple really when you get your head round it.

As for being "childish and moronic", I think that is just you insulting me!

Not sure why you have it in for me except that something makes you cringe, bit like the silence and absence of the fans makes me but I don't go on about it like this.

I also do not agree we are a "pishy wee club" (if you don't like it then don't come along if that's how you feel about the club) nor is this my only announcing job as I am doing it all year round just now and can't actually fit all the bookings in, sorry to disappoint you.

I also do not do it for prestige, glory, or anything else you seem to hint at, or any other reason other than giving something back to my club, albeit a "pishy wee club" as you so graphically describe in your rambling rant
