I was about 4/5 years old and the Rag and Bone man came round, and I seemingly gave him my new trousers for a balloon. Luckily I didnt have them on or that would of been a whole different story..

You might upset some of the sensitive little butterflies by using the word " tinks"

Who can remember the gyppo types that used to go round the schemes shouting " Bring out yer rags!" You would raid yer mothers wardrobe, take it down and in exchange be given a balloon!
Happy days!

I remember the Rag & Bone men that used to come round the estates. You took your old clothes and exchanged them for e.g. balloons, sunspecs etc. Just about every city in Britain had them, for hundreds of years. What do you think Steptoe and Son did for a living? Also, when you think about it, they were probably the first commercial recyclers. Trendy now or what.
and no - they weren't "gypos" as one person chose to call them. Scottish people who take to the road are called "travellers" and do not come from the Romanies.
