Was just on the news there about the proposed new supermarket (Somerfields I believe) to be built beside the Park & Ride at the top of Scone. Bloke who runs the local post office was on and said something along the lines of "Nobody wants it" as if he is the voice of the whole of Scone. He also put a letter into the PA the other week ranting about it as if he is the Lord Mayor of the village and what he says goes.
I know plenty of people who want the new store there as it would save trips to the other side of town & also give a jobs boost. I appreciate that some folk may have their reasons for not wanting a new shop but he is being a complete dick acting as if everyone is of the same opinion as him.
Actually thinking about going in at the weekend and taking him to task on his words as I think it is bang out of order him going on TV and acting as the voice of the majority when it's all BS.

It might be. I'm no too sure. The current Tesco petrol station/mini supermarket was previously Somerfield.
Its not only people in scone that it will benifit, think of all the others who are out in the sticks will have access to it.
As for this bloke saying he dont want it - if his shop offered the services, prices & opening times that are required then there would be no need for a super market to be built!
Its bad enough driving to scone and back in to perth most hours during the day with the traffic!

Exactly. There's Balbeggie, Coupar Angus & all the other places out the road. The fact that there will be a bus service going from the shop to the town is also a plus for folk who can't be arsed using / don't have their own means of transport.

Not sure if it is the same guy, but I think it is, anyway - there was one letter that said the traffic at Bridgend would be even worse! I failed to see how this is the case as a large proportion of those cars are people from scone and other outlying areas heading into Perth to go Tescos/ Safeways etc. By having this out the back of scone it will take away from traffic and congestion there.

As a Scone resident I have no problem what-so-ever in having a supermarket built on the outskirts of town. The problem is the minority of "Sconeites" that believe they have the right to speak for the whole of the village.
A supermarket would reduce traffic on the bridge. It takes ages for us to get to either Asda or Tesco.
I understand the concerns local shops have- but if they are unique enough they will survive.

True. Thing is if folk are coming from outside of Scone (e.g. Balbeggie/Coupar Angus etc) to go to the supermarket then there's a much higher likelihood of them nipping into other shops in Scone too than if they just passed through for whatever reason. Could also benefit local food places (Curry King/Scone Chippy) as folk will come in & get their shopping then might think "Oh I fancy a curry/chinese tonight" and pop into one of them.

Many years ago William Lows acquired a site for a supermarket in Aviemore. The local shopkeepers were up in arms and protested loudly. Lows were swallowed up by a little known trader called Tesco who developed the store and.....the villiage thrived.
Punters from all around Strathspey, who had previously trailed to Inverness and Perth to do their big shop instead went to Aviemore. Those local traders who made an effort were able to attract more trade from new customers drawn into the villiage from far and wide.
Whilst Scone's new store will be on the periphery of the Royal villiage, with a bit of imagination and marketing, traders should see it as an opportunity to exploit new trade.

Sorry Derek, just read your post which covered most of my gibberings.

And what also gets my goat about all this is how many businesses will actually be affected. I dont think you can count supermarkets which takes TEsco's and the Co-op out of it, the clothes shop will also not be affected, the Spar possibly will be, but then again its expensive anyway, The butcher will probably be the big loser, the "bakery" more of a takeaway so doubt they will be. That doesnt leave alot left. So all in all not to many. As for this it will lose the village feel, i think that left many years ago think of all the expansion so far, all the houses up Goshen, all the house at the end of Spoutswells left and right sides. LOad of nonsense, would love to something other than Somerfields its crap IMO.

Is that not the local councillor for Scone who runs the post office?
I'll still use the butchers anyway even if there is a supermarket - If its a Tesco I'll never go near it, that stupid pay at the window policy and dont dare come into the shop to pay has meant Ive not used the place in easily 6 months.
Its typical of the local old moaning b*stards I have encountered since moving to Scone (which is a great place by the by these folks aside) - yet another case of the NIMBYS, there are currently three shops in scone, none of them "local" businesses anyway, a SPAR, a Tesco and a Co-op....so whats the problem?!

I was slightly surprised by the 'outline planning approval', particularly as there are outlets where you can get the essentials and with Perth being a small journey away. What happens to the Scone park and ride, since the location of the new supermarket store is at the existing PnR site? Is the park and ride being relocated?
With a new supermarket opening it will make sod all difference to traffic movements, in fact I will likely head out there now and again for some variety (presuming it gets built) - also bonus of jobs to our community and not forgetting variety, surely it cant be that bad a thing?
There are always positive and negative points to all plans, but Id really hope that the new superstore is Carbon Neutral with onsite elecrtic generation (wind and solar), rainwater harvesting, sustainable urban drainage to name the main points.
At the end of the day, Im not put up nor down with the decision, afterall it is only an outline approval! Just wait till we see the final plans, the campaigners will be complaining about the colour of the glass used :)

An employee from Tesco told me that it was the council that decided to have the pay outside of the window rule, so can't really blame Tesco if that's the case.
I'm sure the SPAR has been owned/run by the same Scone man for 50 years, so although it's now under the SPAR banner, it's still kinda a local shop.
Some of the people in Scone are very funny. I took my new puppy for a walk in Scone Park a couple of weeks ago and got speaking to a lady with another dog. She asked me the dog's name and when I told her "Jake, she said ". . . oh we already have a Jake!" as if I should of checked with the good people of Scone to make sure our dogs names don't clash!
The bakery does terrific cakes and the Butcher is very good- they will survive no bother me thinks! The rest are average, especially the over priced chippy (foods crap!)

Ernie Miller was the man that had that shop when I was a lad. He had the first personalised number plate I ever saw EM 707 or something like that.
Nice man who had a couple of lovely daughters too.
He claimed to have been a goalkeeper who once was on Saints books!
Scone was/is a great place to live.

Indeed. The malteser cake is superb. The chippy is generally pash though. I only get chips there if I'm desperate & don't have any in the house if I want chips wi' the tea.

Get it built - Let's have some traffic out there, why should Scone be a virtually traffic free zone. It'll take the pressure off the town and transfer a lot of traffic over to Scone. One has recently been built about two miles from where I live and the traffic past the house is practically non-stop from early morning until they pull the shutters down. As long as you don't mind over there - get behind it Now!!

I was at a funeral in Perth a few months back and Ernie was there, and you have his number plate spot on !!! he,s taken a back seat in the shop these days and his daughter Susan runs it mainly, she is the younger one of the two, i went to school with the older one, Danya, a stunner back in the day for sure !! he has a son too, older than the two girls, cant remember his name though.
I left Scone a lot of years ago but still have a longing for the place, if i had the opportunity i,d go back, but there is and probably always will be a snobbish element living there who think they are better than the Perthites, they are the older generation mind you.
If i was living there i,d be backing the new supermarket plans for sure, if you dont move forward you stand still, get it built !!

His name was David, he ran the Douglas for a while and had a blind eye for the underage drinkers in the villiage!

He is my Uncle, my late dad's youngest brother. He has an amazing and very dry sense of humour. On our visit to Perth for the game against Hearts at the start of this season we sat in front of a couple of his friends, one of whom played football with him during National Service and at Saints.
I loved living in Scone and even though I left to join up when I was 17, I made frequent visits until my parents passed away.
I remember playing football in Scone Park with my mates all day long until nightfall when you could barely see the ball. Happy days!

Delighted that the 'shout the loudest' moaners aren't getting their way. It has been horrendous propoganda from these muppets trying to manipulate people into objecting with ridiculous arguments against the proposal. My maw got a standard objection letter through her door with a guidance note advising her to send it away twice as did many others in Scone. I've yet to meet one person who isn't in favour of it. I think the obvious thing to do if you object is to write in a letter of objection, however, the problem is that people who are in favour are clueless as to how they can be heard.
Exact same scenario with the painting of the Queen's Bridge. Council was swamped with phone calls from furious people who liked the new colour scheme. The Councillors got a few objections and rather than trying to gauge the opinion of all their constituents, they shat their pants and gave in to the complainers.
Anyway, I'll continue to use Spar/Co-op etc for bread, rolls, milk, fags, papers etc and will use the new store (assuming it goes ahead) for the 'big shop' which currently takes place in one of the big supermarkets in Perth. I'm fairly confident this will be the case for many.

The park and ride would still be in Scone, just moved to a different spot.
The smaller shops will survive if they provide a good enough service.

I didnt know there was a park and ride in Scone...I assume it goes to Perth, is there realistically a need for this!? Or is this basically the number 7 bus route?

Yeh it's on the 7 route. I assume it's for those based in Blair/Burrelton, etc that work in town centre and don't want to pay a fortune on parking.
