View Full Version : Player of the year

Capital Saint

Should us Edinburgh Saints have a player of the year do? Perhaps have a wee vote at the end of the season and then nip down to Mathers to celebrate the choice?

Maybe the player in question would turn up to accept the award.

What do you think?

At this point in time, my vote goes to Liam Craig.

Sounds alright, though I'd doubt a player would come along to a pub with us lot after some of the antics on away days this season. I think we're getting quite a wee reputation for ourselves.

I would probably agree with Liam Craig though, very consistant.

We should have a night in the pub where we all get lashed and finally come round to agreeing that Big Dave is player of the year by a country mile!!:laugh:

Rather than having a night as such, we could potentially decide a POY (in Edinburgh) and then perhaps present a trophy to said player at one of the Perth based award nights like the 208 or muirton do. I seem to remember Auchterarder club doing this in the Muirton Suite last year joint with the Muirton club (i think!). would save on cost of venue and getting players to go to edinburgh.

While we're at it we should appoint a Edinburgh based Saintees hero to present the award! Maybe Kano or Sheerins brother!:laugh::laugh::laugh:

Same goes for me. Piss up in Perth and Dave MacKay as player of the year. What about young player? Does muzz qualify for that?

would certainly get my vote for YPOTY. You cant really vote for the young guys who fill the bench and i reckon it should be someone in the U21 category. I think Mooner generally won the supporter club awards last year for youngster so davidson must qualify!

Cup tie MacKay for me, consistant all season, thought about Irvine but Mackay just shades it.

End of season presentation at perth etc and on to Edinburgh later sounds good to me.

Why not have a piss-up in Embra, rubber stamp our choice, agree on a trophy(and how to pay for it) then have another piss-up in Perth to present said trophy.Liam for me but DM just behind.

Piss up Edinburgh/Piss up Perth/Piss up in both - I'm easy with any of those options!

Dave Mackay gets my vote. Liam has been excellent the last 4 or 5 months, but I thought he started off the season poorly and looked a wee bit off the pace. For that reason, Sir Dave gets my vote.

Muzz has to be young player of the year.

Go for it big man

Ok i'll put the feelers out on this one.

If we are going to go ahead with this then we need to get started now.

Obviously we need to pay for a trophy so the more that want to get in involved will keep the costs down.

What's the opinion on the trophy / trophies? Are we going for POTY and young POTY? Or just POTY?

I'll find out costs of a trophy/trophies but if anyone knows of a good place to get these then let me know.

All those who want to contribute to this can they PM me or sent an email to the following address.

I've set up an email address which is edinburgh_saints@hotmail.co.uk (which we can use for the voting if this goes ahead)

If we get enough numbers in the next few days then I'll post details about how we will do the voting.

Over to you guys, i'm up for it so let me know what you think.

GWR well done ! Not sure about using PM facility so here goes.I cannot make the last game due to work but I am very happy to contribute to a trophy.Personally I would just go for POTY and my vote would be for Liam but would be very happy for DM to win as I think he is a close second.Alpha trophies on Ferry Rd seem to have a good reputation and have taken over Emslies which was always my company of choice when involved in amateur football. They have a website and their premises are easily accessible being in Leith. From past experience I think a Friday suits most and as such would propose we go for Friday 30th early evening somewhere central.(mathers etc )If you want to PM me I would then be able to reply.

I had done some stuff with regards to POTY but seem to have run out of time to do anything on it myself what with pending holidays and running out of weekends before the end of season.

I think the original plan was to have a night on the piss in edinburgh to raise cash and decide poty and then try and tag on to one of the other supporters groups (although i hadnt contacted any to discuss). I had spoken to the mercat about hiring out the downstairs bar and we should be able to get that on a free provided we spend enough at the bar (otherwise its 150 quid for a fri or sat night)! Shouldnt be a problem, so long as Gav and Harry are there!:laugh: however, given that there isnt much time now, im not sure of availability. we would need to be sure of a good turnout prior to booking too.

I wont be about for the last game of the season or the weekend of the Kilie game as im on holiday but im happy to help out during week if needs be. How selfish of my gran to have her 90th and a family reunion on the last day of the season!:laugh:

All coming back to me now Tommy about the Mercat, would be a good shout for a nite on the lash, Graham is a good lad that owns it, used to have sportsmans in Musselburgh, we will leave it in the capable hands of the birthday boy to see what he comes up with!!

geoff was right!!
22-04-2010, 08:26 PM
Ok, so who's up for a night out on the 30th then?

As Tommy has mentioned, there is the option of the Mercat. That will depend on numbers. So anyone who is planning on coming out can they post on here or PM me. Then we can decide on a venue.

Tommy has started the ball rolling with some ideas to raising some money and we should have some answers by next week on this. If we dont get that sorted out then for this season we may have to all chip in a small contribution for getting a trophy.

I'll ask the question about trying to arrange with another supporters club for presenting the trophy.

In the mean time who's up for a night out?

other possible venues that were mentioned were the upstairs in mccowans at fountainbridge or cargo. Sure there will be numerous other bars for consideration in the city centre and east end but i guess numbers and availability will largely dictate the venue

I am happy for Friday or Sat as I think Killie is a pie too far! As i dont get to many games and therefore have less Saints related expense I would be happy to make a decent contribution for a decent trophy. Any venue suits but I honestly feel there will not be a HUGE turnout (hope I am wrong) and you should pick a pub with that in mind. There is nothing worse than promising a bar a decent crowd and then a few of you standing about like pr*cks.

Ok here I go again. After speaking to a few guys that have made plans for attending on Friday 30th it's best to just leave it for that day.

Venue still to be decided to keep the ideas coming and then someone else decide.

And for anybody that cant make the night out, can they please still vote via a PM or email to edinburgh_saints@hotmail.co.uk.

I'm arranging 2 trophies today so the vote will be for POTY and Young POTY.

geoff was right!!
23-04-2010, 01:49 PM
The cost of the trophies is around £95 (for both)

We plan to have a raffle to raise money for the trophies. All money raised will go towards the trophies and any extra will be used towards POTY awards for season 2010/2011.

So far we have a signed Saints top from this season and hopefully we can get other prizes as well. The raffle will take longer than the 2 weeks that we have left in the season so it may run for a bit longer. I'll pay for the trophies just now as we dont have time to wait on this.

And finally the question of presenting the trophies?

It has been arranged that around 6 or 7 of us will present the winners with their trophies on the pitch before the Hamilton game on the 8th of May.

The best way to pick the 6 or 7 is to draw the names out of a hat from everyone that votes for the POTY. Surely that's reason enough to get your votes in.

I'll pass on anymore info when I get it.

Decided to keep it off the forum until after they have been presented. Anybody who wants to know then send me a PM.

And who is presenting the trophies?

That's still to be decided.

To make it easier than picking names and then they cant make it, or dont want to, can I have names of those who are going and are willing to be part of the presentation.

Are you getting the train up?

Not sure yet, already have the bus booked from a few weeks ago but will be getting the train back to Edinburgh so might just get a return, as it's not much dearer than a single. Even if I do get the bus I'll be up there by 11.

We're getting the 08:33 train with an open return, either way i'll catch up with you before the game.

I'm going and, like Davie, I'm up for anything. Although if there are any people who are desperate to present the awards, I'm happy to sit it out.

I'm off work this week with some sort of gastro infection!! Not a happy bunny. :cry:I'm hoping to be feeling better for Saturday morning seen as the doctor gave me pills to pop today.

If I can make it I'll happily help out with presentation at half time.

Hopefully i'll post all the details of the raffle by tomorrow, i'll start selling tickets this weekend but will continue selling for a while so there will be plenty time to get tickets Andy.

I picked up the trophies yesterday so at least I have that part organised. They look really good but then again I'm biased as I picked them!

As for presenting the awards, I was in contact with Paul Smith today and it's been decided that the best place to present the awards is in the Muirton Suite after the game. Sorry for those who wanted to be on the pitch:laugh:

It makes it easier for us and the club to do it this way. This way, everyone who wants to be involved can be. It's easier than trying to pick people before the game and arrange to have everyone sitting together to get on the pitch. Everyone can meet in the Muirton Suite after the game and i've arranged for someone to be there to take photos so let's get everyone in the pictures.

We just have to decide who will hand over the trophies but that can be done anytime before it. Anyone good at talking in public?

As for the raffle, as i've said, i'll start selling tickets tomorrow so get your money out:wink:

The prizes are as follows:-

1 - Signed St Johnstone away top
2 - Rare St Johnstone v Clydebank programme 12/3/83
3 - St Johnstone polo shirt (not sure of size)
4 - St Johnstone rain jacket (not sure of size)
5 - 2 x St Johnstone beanie hats
6 - 2 x bottles of Smirnoff vodka
7 - £20 Ocean Terminal shopping voucher
8 - Bottle of Macallan malt whisky
9- 2 x Bottles of red wine

Big thanks to someone who will remain nameless for all the St Johnstone stuff but you know who you are. (Please don't post who it is, as they want to remain nameless) Really appreciate all the help you have given us (i'm sure everyone knows who this is) so if you see him/her  tomorrow then make sure you buy him/her a drink.

Nobody from Ocean Terminal will be reading this but I would like to thank them for helping me with the prizes. And so my shameless plug for them is....get to Ocean Terminal and spend some money!!!!! Who knows you may even bump into a really really hard working Saints fan:wink:

I'm sure you'll agree that it's worth parting with some money for those prizes. All monies will go towards this years PoTY awards and hopefully we will raise enough to start early for next year.

See you all on the train or in the Muirton Suite after the game for a refreshment or two.

There are still some who want to buy tickets so we'll get the draw done once they have bought them.

Not sure when i'll catch up with everyone as i'm on holiday for the Hearts and Aberdeen games. Looks like my first game of the season will be Motherwell on the 11th September or St Mirren the following week.

Finally got round to meeting up with a few of the guys to carry out the draw!

The draw was done the other night with Tractor Boy, Baldy Marc and Stanstheman. With the help of the barmaid in Paul Kanes pub, The Four in Hand.

And the winners are:-

1 - Signed St Johnstone away top - NEIL
2 - Rare St Johnstone v Clydebank programme 12/3/83 - BRUSH
3 - St Johnstone polo shirt (not sure of size) - GORDON
4 - St Johnstone rain jacket (not sure of size) - KENNY
5 - 2 x St Johnstone beanie hats - PED & JIM SMITH
6 - 2 x bottles of Smirnoff vodka - RYAN & IAN
7 - £20 Ocean Terminal shopping voucher - MARC
8 - Bottle of Macallan malt whisky - BARNEY
9- 2 x Bottles of red wine - SMURF & MARK G

Can anyone who has won and will be in the Polworth on Sunday let me know so I can bring your prizes. I'm sure they can be kept there until after the game.

Thanks to everyone who bought tickets, there is around £40 left over which can be used for this years POTY awards. Anyone else want to do it this year?
