View Full Version : Saints vs. Raith Rovers 15/08/06

Any thoughts on this game? Anyone actually going?
The main issue for me is whether we stick with (virtually) the same side to give them more game time, or keep the fringe players up to speed with a run out. Will Sheridan and James be "injured" again? Any news on Ruti's knock, looked like ankle ligaments possibly.
Finding it difficult to put a line-up together, hopefully that's a good thing!

I reckon it'll be...
______________Halliwell
___Anderson___McManus____James
Lawrie__Hardie__Mensing__Sheerin__Stanic
__________Peaso____Scotland
Subs: Cuthbert, Dyer, Young, Milne, Jackson
Mr Spoons

I'll be there. We really should be trying to win this cup so I believe we should pick our strongest side. Assuming Ruti is out I'd go:
Halliwell
Mensing McManus James
Stevenson Hardie Sheridan Young Stanic
MacDonald Scotland
But I'd go along with playing the Cat in goals, and Jackson up front if Coyle wants to keep them sharp.
will be there with squire

I will be there. I got the day off to go to a Funeral :( but should make it up to Perth in time. First night game in a while, so looking forward to it. :D
I missed the East Fife game, so whats it like everyone being in the West stand? I take it its the same for this game?

Will wait and see how Ruti is and team news tomorrow before predicting team/formation.
But it's a midweek game - no Sheridan!
The game is live on Radio Scotland and the internet for anyone that cant make it up.

If you can go to the match you should be going to the match. None of this part-time supporter stuff, it's reduced prices tonight.
Hopefully the Duffster and his staff let me in late, I have a dentist's appointment so I'll miss the start.

Hopefully the Duffster and his staff let me in late, I have a dentist's appointment so I'll miss the start.
Probably worth giving them a call! You know what the club are like!
Anyway, Owen's said he's going to make five or six changes with Ando, Stevo, Dyer, Young and Peaso all likely to start. Jacko would've played but is away on U19 international duty with Ireland.
Looks like Raith will be playing some fringe players too and they are trying to get Neil Janczyk on loan! Nae luck! :***:

Im giving this one a miss. Season ticket (bit of a miss nomer that, should be called league ticket) is not valid so I cant really justify stumping up £10 to watch what sounds like effectivly reserve team football.

They might hold the game up for you Dev.
Said on t/text last night Raith were hoping to field a new signing. surlely Saints would not let Scrabble go to them on the day of a big cup game & knock us out of a major compitition.

Halliwell
Mensing McManus James
Stevenson Hardie Sheridan Young Stanic
MacDonald dobbie
Dobbie in last chance saloon tonight,

Dobbie was told to get himself in physical shape, and judging by the way he's dropped the weight he's on his way to being this so hopefully he will be on the bench tonight! :)
Dyer, Anderson and Young looking likely to start!

Savo will score for fun against teams like Raith. He should be the same against most of the 1st Div teams too. How long was he injured for last season? Even when he wasn't 100% he was still looking dangerous so i don't have any probs with him. Still think Peaso is 1st choice though.

Made hard work of it tonight but Raith had a few good pro`s in their team including that thug Fotheringham who should have gone off with Stevo.
Savo & Peaso are not the answer up front as they don`t link. I thought Doris did more in the first 10 mins he was on than Peaso did all the time he was on.
I thought the goal was an Anderson OG but neither he nor Cuthbert covered themselves in glory at the goal.
Still it was a good workout for a few & guys like Dyer & Anderson did well to last 120 mins.
templeofsaints
16-08-2006, 12:16 AM
Decent enough performances considering the shift in tactics to 4-4-2 and the changes to the team.
Raith rarely threatened although the ref was obviously trying to help them as much as possible (how the feck did he miss the kick on Dyer's head by their no 10  :?: :!: ). The red card was harsh but possibly deserved (not that we missed Stevenson much) although Fotheringham should also have walked.
Temple Reports up now - I didn't think Cuthbert could do much for the goal - Anderson should have got a challenge in but also McManus should have been back covering. Both had a decent game after that and elsewhere Mensing, Savo and Sheerin were on form again.
Biggest disappointment was Peaso - didn't link well with Savo although at times the support from the right flank was non-existent.
Wouldn't be a Saints cup run with a dodgy extra-time win against lower-league oppo though would it?

Another iffy performance, but again we got the right result so can't complain too much. Thought Savo, Mensing & The Mighty Wiz were our stand-outs, along with - briefly - Doris when he came on. Every time I've seen Doris play for the 1st team I've been really impressed. He wasn't on the pitch long last night but made a huge contribution, and I'm not entirely convinced it's right that he's ranked behind Jackson.I thought Stevenson was contributing a lot too, but was really stupid to get himself sent off in that way. There's no excuse for that.
We were awful at their goal - poor defending all round to allow them the chance, and then some distinctly questionable goalkeeping from Cuthbert to let it in. I felt he hesitated in coming out for it, ended up in No Man's Land, and made it really easy for the striker to lob him. But our goals were really good, and Sheerin's effort that hit the bar would have been an absolute peach had it gone in.
Had we not eventually won, I have to say I think Coyle would have had to shoulder a lot of the blame. I thought he got things seriously wrong and it gave Raith the upper hand in the opening stages. Why (a) play an alien formation in which none of the midfielders seem to know where they're meant to be, and (b) field such a weakened team in the first place? It was a first team game after all, not a reserves match, and I really feel it's important that we try our best to progress in this competition. It's fair enough resting 1 or 2 players (eg Sheridan and another), but by my reckoning there were far too many changes last night.
P.S. Was there really a "technical fault" with the scoreboard or were the club just saving themselves a wee bit of money on their electricity bill? Come on Kevin, you can tell us - we won't spill the beans! :P
P.P.S. Was loving the music last night - was that a bit of Let Loose I was lucky enough to hear the end of just as I was arriving?
P.P.P.S. Those George Wimpey ads around the side of the pitch are rubbish. What does "Voted 4 stars by our customers" mean? Doesn't "4 stars" generally mean "not quite good enough"? Why would you want to advertise that?

I wish I had a pound for every time that KC has been lobbed. I think his performance for the goal and the attempt he made for a cross in the second half showed why Owen looked for a new keeper. He did, however, make a coupleof fairly good saves in the second half, so credit where credit is due.
As for teh sending off I think the ref got it right with Stevo but wrong with Fotheringham. Both should have been off.

The score board has so many faulty or blatantly not working bulbs that you can barely see it the bottom half of it. It wasn't worth while having it on, so they turned it off. It shouldn't be used again until it is fixed.

You better sit down as I'm about to agree with you. It's ridiculous the number of times he has been lobbed, even this season alone it is three!
His handling is exceptional, he holds almost everything from range, making it look easy and as such not receiving the credit he maybe deserves for that part of his game but his command of the box and constantly leaving himself open to getting lobbed is a joke.

Jackson is stronger, faster and far more of a goal threat. I like Doris but he's not on a par with Jackson.

Stevos takle was fine was he not sent off for his retaliation to the player that shuved him? Stevo shouldn't off been sent off and like radford id be even more annoyed if he was sent off because of the takel as there was nothing wrong with it.
The ref was a total bawbag hope we never have him as a ref again what i want to know is why the hell was kevin Fortherham no sent off he pulled shirts like 5 times and done a few bad takels and he never got sent off but stevo did what no-one knows why he got sent off for.

Stevos takle was fine was he not sent off for his retaliation to the player that shuved him? Stevo shouldn't off been sent off and like radford id be even more annoyed if he was sent off because of the takel as there was nothing wrong with it.

How can you acknowledge that he retaliated, and then at the same time say he shouldn't have been sent off? Regardless of whether or not it was a bad tackle, he raised his hands to an opponent so had to go. I don't see how anyone could dispute that.

But what was he sent off for?
Some reports say it was for the tackle, some say for his reaction - have you been privey to the refs report?
I assumed it was for the tackle. From what he said after the game he seemed to think that he was sent off for the tackle.
Don't you think his tackle was worthy of a sending off??
I was simply asking what he was sent off for - if it was retaliation as was reported in most circles then 3 Raith players who also raised their hands should have walked as well.

Totally agree Tranmere, how teh ref managed to book 3 Saints players for the pushing and shoving and not all the Raith boys god knows.
I thought the tackle was reckless and dangerous.
