No point dwelling on last night but this all of a sudden doesn't seem such an appealing game, especially with our record against them.

Considering Savo and Hardie had knocks last night, they shouldn't have played and you can only hope they haven't been aggrievated.

I'd stick with the same side that played Thistle, give the ones that played last night an opportunity to make up for dragging us half way across the country and turning in that performance.

id go:

halliwell

Anderson James McManus Stanic

Hardie Sheerin Mensing McLaren

Milne Scotland

This should be an easy game for us, plus the fact we have taken all their good players :D , i am going to predict a 3-1 win. :D

Was it not McLaren who put in that cross across goal for Jasons second goal on Saturday - from the right? I know he's predominantly a left winger but he seemed unphased in venturing on the right against Partick Thistle and I'm sure he whipped that cross in on his right foot! Versatility - that's what I like to see! 8)

No one is disputing that but it's entirely different to him lining up on the right to start a game. His marker (Derek Young) didn't track him on Saturday, hence the reason he got the cross in.

I'm not suggesting for a second that we play him there, I'm just pointing out that he didn't look as uncomfortable down the right as I thought he would for a guy who was brought in as a left winger. He can also use his right foot unlike someone like Sheerin for example who always needs to bring it onto his left!

This is a funny one... we have a poor record, and they always raise their gam eto beat Owen... however by all accounts they are very poor and we have taken all their good players, so i'm going to be the optimist and plump for a 2 or more goal victory.

Airdrie are very poor this season, and in an awfy state.

i hope though, that Saints go out with a professional game and do their upmost to get the 3 points, maintain the pressure on the leaders in which will be one of our "easier" games this season, and to improve the goal difference tally also. we can only hope for this, and i suspect Coyle will revert back to a winning team. McLaren's pace will be vital, as will Scotland, Sheerin, Mensing being on form! And the defence to work together as a unit!

We need to win this, as it's Gretna v Livingston, so something will give there... if they draw and we win by 3 goals or more, we go top of the league, which is nice!

I can't help but get the feeling Airdrie selling McLaren was them accepting relegation and taking their parachute payment early. If they had any aspirations to stay up they would have sold him earlier and used the money to get a replacement. Should be a decent win for Saints.

I thought folk were wrong to write them off with the attacking threat of Prunty, McPhee (still a fantastic player at this level), McDougall and McLaren but obviously they've lost Willie and Prunty doesn't seem to have got going yet.

I like Airdrie and think Sandy Stewart has done a great job with the resources at his disposal but it's looking ominous for them.

Still think we'll manage to screw up, and Gretna and Livi will draw to rub it in.

I've seen us play Airdrie it must be 10 times now, I don't think we've deserved to win once and indeed have won only once!

According to a big Erderie fan, runs one of the supporters clubs, he told me that they sold us McLaren for 50k to help pay the wages as 3/4 of the following matches were away from home and they needed the money to pay the players/staff wages, they are that desperate for cash.
According to him they are certs for relegation and the signs for the club do not look good at all.

Airdrie Rovers anyone :P

Very poor performance, with an equally poor referee.
Having said that, Airdrie never looked too threatening, and we got the win which is what matters.

One of the worst games I've seen but due in part to a terrible, attention-loving referee.

We played poorly but still managed to miss two one-on-ones and win.

Points win prizes.

SJC

The ref should be down in England in charge of a Rugby League match, I've never heard a ref shout as much as he did- 'Behave yourself', 'Watch the arms' etc- what the hell was that about?

Actually, the Airdrie defenders would be better off in Rugby League as well given their treatment of Scotland/ Milne and Peaso today.

We should have won 3-0, had a blatant hand ball turned down as well as a shocking offside decision when Scotland was clean through on goal.

I didn't see too much wrong with the performance, we were comfortable, Airdrie's only chance was the missed header at the back post.

3 more points towards what could be a championship winning season, a win away to Livi next week will put us top of the league as early as this, good start so far despite dropping points in games we dominated at the start of the season.

Poor today, only 1 shot on target in first half(goal) More chances in second half as Airdrie had to come out & we brought on Sheridan& took off McLaren who did nothing all day. Moved Sheerin out wide where he was more effective than he was in midfield where he was very poor.

3 points & joint top of the league so we can`t grumble. Airdrie gave us a hard game & seemed to be more up for it than us. That in the fact that Airdrie are our boggy team makes it a good result.

Halliwell still worries me. Missed a cross by a mile in first hall & a couple of dodgy punches in the second. Has he had to make a real save since he joined us.

A lot of tired legs it seemed to me today - poor performance overall and still too many high balls. Ref was atrocious but the linesmen were just as bad.

It sounds like today was one of the games would ended up in a draw last season so as has been said this match could prove to be important. AS was said last season its all about the 1-0 victories!

Next three games are going to be very very tough and we need to win to keep confidence up and show our ability to win the league. If we slip up in then it would be a huge blow.

Mr Spoons

Joint top of the league

This was always going to be be a tester, and we won. OK it wasnae great watching but we won, and in terms of good chances taken it could have been 4 -1 to us.

Still look suspect down the right; and to complicate things we looked more threatening when McLaren was subbed and Goran and sheerin romped down the left wing.

Next week - with the two big games - should give us a good idea....

Oh and how bad has Lawrie been so far!
Thought he made some great blocks and clearances yesterday and he actually created the goal by chasing a lost cause and winning the corner. He's just taking time to settle. I was pissed off with him on Tuesday but he'd been better over the last month. He's only been at one club before Saints so it's understandable that he's taking a bit of time to blend in.#

The match kicked off late too, hence what seemed like all the injury-time.

I think you hit the nail on the head there, Gary. It wasn't a great game, games against Airdrie seldom are, but we managed to get a win when last season we would have drawn 0-0. I reckon getting the three points in a game like this is more important than the performance

...aye after he'd taken the throw-in and given it straight to an Airdrie player  :***:

Lawrie was still unwilling to make a tackle on the wing - McManus was pulled out of position a lot in the 2nd half to cover for him meaning Mensing had to drop back to help out in defence. I just don't have any faith in Lawrie's ability.

I thought he was throwing himself into a lot of challenges in front of the East Stand yesterday, challenges not many of our other players would go into. I'd rather he stood his ground than went to ground in the full-back area though.

Ok, the throw didn't find a Saints player but why was the guy taking the throw the one who closed the player on the six-yard line down? Where were Scotland, Milne, Hardie or Mensing, who were all closer to the ball than Lawrie.

I find it amazing he's taking stick when Stanic turned in the sort of performance he did yesterday. At one point Airdrie were breaking and Sheerin was bursting a gut to get back into the left-back position whilst Mr Untouchable was strolling back up the pitch.

Was that the same Sheerin that lost the ball in the first place. Sheerin burst a gut just to run 5 yards & I have seen a juggernought turn faser than he does. Good game when he went out left yesterday but terrible in midfield.

Stanic was poor yesterday - certainly I wasn't happy with his performance (he wasn't great at Cappielow either). But the difference is that we've seen Goran have some decent games this and last season and he's shown some ability to treat something like yesterday as an off day.

Unfortunately with Lawrie games like yesterday are typical of what he's shown all season. It doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Hazel1884
17-09-2006, 11:58 AM
i think yesterday was a poor game, but we won it ugly and got the 3 points. Most of the points have already been covered to be honest.

Thought Lawrie was looking like there was a slight improvement in the first half but faded back to typical lawrie in the second half. it was never going to be a game of free flowing football against Airdrie (incidentally, the first time we have beaten them under Oweny's reign) who are a stuffy side. Would have been a beautiful move if Hardie's chance in the second half had went in - it was a bit of sexy fitbaw from St Johnstone.

Brings on hopefully a good game on Saturday against Livingston. I hate home games, but away games are fantastic banter so lets hope we get the numbers through at Almondvale next week. Mon the Saints!!!

who were the doubts yesterday? Obviously Kevin James was one, but i noticed Martin Hardie had his wanking bandage off yesterday! So was he one of the trio? radofrd, you usually have insider news......

Incidentally, the first time we have beaten them under Oweny's reign.
We beat them 1-0 last season when Jason scored. Week before the Dundee game when Craig Mackay gave that penalty.

Only our second ever victory against United though, strange considering we were undefeated in our last 22 league games against Airdrieonians dating back, I think, to win they became the first side to win at McD in a competitive game.

Perhaps it's because people are not reacting to one game... Stanic had a poor game, but generally he's been very good... Lawrie, well... To be fair, I don't think he's not trying, just think he's been very bad... and apparently a regular winner of the prize-duffer at training by all accounts!

Stevenson is supposedly the best in training, as were names like Martyn Fotheringham, JP McShite and Gary Farquhar before him.

Give him time until Owen gets him playing the role the way he wants. Remember he's been playing with Falkirk who played football from touchline to touchline rather than from defence to attack!

I just wanted to mention that I thought Anderson looked much more solid at the back than when I've seen him in the past. His distribution still stinks, but credit where it is due, despite the relative lack of threat posed by Airdrie.
