View Full Version : Airdrie United vs. Saints 18/11/06
Hopefully a semi-decent Saints crowd go through to this one after the great result against Rangers. Would be good to get a travelling support there like we had at Livingston but I guarantee people find a reason like weather or money to avoid going.
I'll be there though and hope we finally manage to get a win there.

Honestly, just prepare for the worst. Some arsehole at the council round about here (basically Stirling/Falkirk area) must have found some cash he never new they had. They have dug up almost every road in the area and are firing new roundabouts in all over the place. I have 3 access roads into my work and 2 of them have been ripped up for new roundabouts at the same time. Numpties.
The Denny roadworks are meant to be finished by Monday so I would be surprised if they are that bad seeing as its nearly done. The ones up at Dunblane looked ok the last time I was up there so not sure if there is still a problem or not.

Strongest team out & it took us to 85 mins to get a goal. Had a feeling about today as airdrie would be up for it & in our faces which is the type of games we lose.
Win at Ross a must or we are playing catch up ,big time.
At least Savo got a goal & we don`t have the (saints never lose when Savo scores anymore. I knew when that was in the papers we just had to lose a game that Savo scored in.

I couldn't decide wether to go along today as I was going on my own - seems I made the wrong decision.
A couple of points.
1) We were rubbish, especially in the 1st half. No good performers. Jason Scoltand must be dropped for the next game and Peaso brought in. We played infinately better when he was on. Scotland tried even less today than he ever has.
2) Owen Coyle needs to take a hard look at himself for not taking Anderson off when he was injured. He left him limping about to defend the corner from which we conceeded (I wonder why).
3) Halliwell is shite. There is no two ways about it. His kicking is shocking. His handling is shocking. His judgement when coming out to feet is shocking. Every Saints fan must admit they hold their breath when the ball is in our box. Thats the 2nd or 3rd pen he has given away. Rubbish.
Plus points? Not really. Peaso was ok and so was Willie McLaren when he came on. Savo's goal was a great finish too.
An absolute stinker of a performance.
No need for a man of the match award this week because not one player deserves it.
Halliwell was awful, failed to catch a fairly standard shot before diving in and giving a pen ( Should have been sent off for his attempt).
Anderson should have been subbed, with the way things we were going at the time he was injured, we couldn't afford the luxury of carrying an injured player.
After Peaso came on we looked a better side and should have had a penalty, but the linesman somehow thought that Peaso was guilty despite the fact that he was lucky not to lose his shirt to the Airdrie Defender.
Scotland wasn't interested at all, injury, jet-lag, laziness whatever, simply put he shouldn't be in the team at the moment.

Hard to argue with a lot of Broon's harsh words, we just weren't good enough to take anything today. We need to play at, or at least near, our best every week if we are gonna win football matches but today we were well off the pace.
Really struggling to pick an MoM.
I'd start Peaso on Wednesday and I never thought I'd hear myself say Scotland should be dropped. Keeper made an error and at the time I was raging but his kicking is the main worry.

Just to add my view, we were totally rubbish today, the worst performance I have seen all season, and the officials were just rotten. The reason being, that we were not interested in the game at all today. The young airdrie midfield was two yards faster than us all day. I still think when we play we are the best team in the league, but we need to be alot hungrier and it is clear our midfield is too slow.
Just to note, Scotland was an absoloute disgrace today, he should def be dropped for the next game untill he actually wants to try. For me this is when coyle should show some management skills (or just balls) and drop him, he was a disgrace. Also agree that anderson should have been taken off earlier.
I would also say that outside a pacy midfielder, we desperately need an out an out right winger, mensing is a first team player but not on the right. As for lawrie I thought he was solid in the first half, then was rubbish in the second half. I would only give pass marks to mcmanus and milne.
Im also starting to think that halliwell is a liability. However I have thought most of these things for some time and this is only one game. I still think we are going to be up there, but there are some things that need to be changed if we actually want to win the league.

Hard to tell. We didn't even get close to a 50-50 all day. At one stage early in the first we knocked the ball about well but then Airdrie came into it. McPhee caused us all sorts of problems. They guy is excellent in the air and very quick.
I just think they looked quicker than us. If teams don't give us time to play we find it really hard to get on top. I think putting Mensing wide right instead of Hardie was a mistake as Mensing does nothing out there.

Worst performance of the season by a mile - too many players believing their own hype these days.
Halliwell should have been sent off and have to agree with Broon. His kicking is simply woeful and he totally failed to command his box on several occasions (including picking up a passback from Lawrie that Thank Rod the ref missed). If it wasn't for the fact that the Cat was injured I'd be tempted to drop Halliwell now.
As for Scotland he needs dropped to the bench. I'm not sure if he's had a rough week or what but in conditions like today against a physical side like Airdrie he badly needed to stand up and be counted - instead spent most of his time whinging and half-heartedly trying to hide. There was a real difference when Peaso came on and I'd start him.
Now to the rest. Hardie cannot be used as a target man - he's simply pish in the air and if we can all see it, why the hell does OC persist with this long ball pish. I'm not sure if it was because it was his old club but he was too fired up today and lucky not to pick up 2 yellows. Lawson passed the ball well but again his discipline had to be called into question with a couple of rash challenges a la Clyde. Sheerin was basically hemmed in and dropping back all the time to cover for Stanic who again looked knackered which basically killed us on the left.
Today we came back to earth with a bump - hopefully it'll knock some sense into them.

Airdrie were the hungrier team throughout, Saints looked like they thought they just had to turn up.
Halliwell had a poor game and looked nervous but I still think he is a better keeper than Cuthbert. The midfield were second best for 90 mins and Scotland was atrocious up front.
I agree with the previous comments regarding dropping Scotland for the Ross County game as he needs to improve his work rate dramatically.
The only pass marks for me today were Anderson and Sheerin.
We played as if the players had been out drinking since coming off the pitch at Ibrox.
Looked sluggish when going forward, lacked composure at the back and the midfield did bugger all, and Halliwell's general shakiness today cost us a goal.
It doesn't make us a bad team, but losing away to the bottom placed team isn't the form on which championship winning seasons are built.
Ross County is now a MUST win game- we must claw back points or it'll be the usual story- fall apart in November or December and fall out of the race for the title.
Certainly back down to earth with a bump!

The game was crap, Saints were beat before the match because of a combination of ' we're always pish at airdrie' syndrome and 'we should be givin the 3 points without kicking a ball because we beat rangers'.
We had a fairly decent support, all crammed in and that, but the noise levels were woeful. I cant stand the negativity of some folk. Almost everyone around me slated every player on the park the whole game. We didnt play well and a few had stinkers but to criticise every thing a player does is stupid, get behind the team or don't bother travelling to 'support'.
'Scotland you are shite, fcuk off back to Trinidad!'
'Lawson you're pish, fcuk off back to Parkhead.'
Absolutely ridiculous things for fans to say, we are Perth St.Johnstone ffs, in the Scottish 1st division.

Back to the points on Halliwell. I'm not trying to defend him because he is a liability but I was watching the young keeper warm up before the game and several shots kicked up off that pitch as though it was very bobbly. Even still, it was straight at him and he should have used his body to get on top of it.

I think I must've been sitting near you mate, a few guys near to me were giving Scotland horrendous dogs abuse, some of it was deserved as he had a bad game, but these guys were a bit OTT especially when they booed him when he was subbed.
I thought Saints struggled to cope with the greasy surface and a team desperate to do well for their new manager. Let me just say that Airdrie were poor but won every high ball and 50-50 ball and were often one step ahead of us and took advantage of that. Having said that, I didn't really feel they threatened Halliwell that much and if it wasn't for H's errors then the scoreline could've been different.
We looked a lot hungrier when the subs came on and the goal gave us a boost, but it was too little too late. A few bad decisions by the officials against us could've lead to the equaliser but it would've been daylight robbery as our play for the 90mins didn't deserve it.
Can someone remind Halliwell, and the defence that Peaso, Milne, McLaren are not giants and will not win headers against 6'0"+ defenders :x

Ah dont you just love it the doom and gloom brigade are back with vengance. Yes we did not play well the ref was crap Halliwell spilled at there goal. When you are all caught up in Halliwell is crap he must be dropped not fcukin one of you noticed the guy was a yard offside when the first shot was taken. I really wonder if half of you watch the game. OC has to take the blame for the second Anderson shouldnt have been near the park he was hurt. The only thing I do agree with is Scotland he was mince but hey everybody can have an off day. Jesus we are supposed to be supporters some of the shouts I heard today in the first half were disgracefull and dont just blame the usual moaners. The only positive shouts were from just above the flags so you all know who you were feckin disgracefull after the team delivered there first Ibrox win you are a joke the lot of you.
Well there's nothing like a visit to Airdrie to bring everyone back down to earth - what is it about that place?
Thought it was going to be a good atmosphere as we were all packed into the one place - must have been around 500 Saints fans - but no, only the boo boys enjoyed their day out.
It's (fairly) well known that Jason is having 'domestic difficulties' at the moment which is clearly affecting his game - is Owen scared to drop him in case it results in a hissy transfer request?
Dismal match until the last 10 minutes when we should have had 2 penalties - the holding of Peaso and the shove on Savo - and the Ref is from Perth too!!

The joys of being a Saints fan
This was on a par with the performance (or should I say lack of it) against Morton - it is amazing how a team can go from such heights to such depths with such ease.
Plenty of time to pick our selves up and get right back in there, but not much room for any more no-shows like this.
Wee word to the players, coaches, manager etc - please remember how much we fans give up and pay to attend such games and at least match our commitment on the pitch - we can accept defeat when it is matched by the feeling that the team at least did their best on the day and it was this lack of application why there has been such a bad reaction to yesterday.
Hazel1884
19-11-2006, 12:10 PM
Haven't read the majority of the reaction on this thread but here's my take on things.......
It took us to go 2 goals down to start even attempting to play IMO. i expected to lose this game - ibrox result or not - New Broomfield is our bogey ground and we always struggle down there.
I thought Halliwell had a bit of a howler yesterday i'll accept but up until now the only thing he has really done wrong is his kicking! But hopefully that will get better - i wouldn't say it's time for him to be dropped (even if Cuthbert wasn't injured!).
The centre backs were as strong as ever today until Anderson went off injured - which hopefully wasn't too bad and will be fit for Ross County on Wednesday. Lawrie had a good first half but Stanic just hasn't impressed me since moving to left back and i have thought the last 3/4 games he's been off his game. But maybe it's just because his class mazy runs aren't happening so much i am disappointed!
As for midfield, Hardie worked hard and gave it his all as normal (though i hate badge kissers if he did indeed do it!!!) but no idea where Mensing was today! He just didn't seem to be in the game at any point today.
Scotland's game will have been talked about in this thread i suspect so i am not even going to say anything on it apart from he's reverting back to last seasons Scotland where he will play when he wants to.
savo's goal was an excellent finish though - he just cannot stop scoring at the moment which is a major bonus given the effort of his strike partner!!!
A day where too many players were off their game at once but there's still a good few games yet - that's Airdrie taken 3 points off each of the 2 'favourites' already - and results like this will happen throughout the season.
Small blip? Let's hope so, and back to winning ways in Dingwall hopefully! Moan the whites!
Steve Maskrey
19-11-2006, 01:14 PM
The problem that Halliwell faces is that if he has a bad game or makes a couple of errors, everyone notices but if any of the outfield players does the same then usually one of his team mates will cover for him.
I'm confident it'll be back to winning ways for the Mighty Whites on Wednesday :D

19-11-2006, 05:19 PM
We were simply beaten by the better team on the day. As much as the officials were rotten, Airdrie clearly wanted to win more than we did. They were first to every ball and outplayed us in the midfield.
I did not expect to take much from the game beforehand, so it wasn't really a surprise when we went 2-0 down. Games like yesterday show why Saints probably won't win the league - we will have a few brilliant performances in the season (some of which will end in draws), but will fail to grind out results at places like New Broomfield, Broadwood, Victoria Park, etc...
At least we are still up there, so it is not a disaster. We should be clear at the top, but once again the draws are killing us. Yesterday was a bad day at the office (expected at New Broomfield) but hopefully we will bounce back on Wednesday!
