All of a sudden, this game doesn't look as appealing after yesterday. They only managed to draw with Forfar (no offence, Big Loon!) yesterday but will no doubt raise their game against us again. Good news is Varielle will be suspended since he was sent off for violent conduct but they'll have Stevo back and no doubt he will be out to show OC he was wrong to let him go.

Jason looked fine yesterday but I'd guess Hardie might be a doubt and obviously Savo wasn't involved at all. Goran took a knock too so might be doubt.

Hopefully we've learnt a lot about them from the last game and our game at Cappielow in September. They will be in our faces so our movement and passing needs to be better than it has been.

Looking forward to standing on a terrace again and our record at Somerset is decent. Since season 80/81, we've played there 18 times in the league and only been beaten on 2 occasions.

What do you mean "all of a sudden"? Since the Rangers game we've been about as appealing as a life sentence. The league is over, we'll go out of the Scottish Cup in either this round or the next and Hibs will gub us in the semi the way we're playing.

I could easily make it to Somerset but don't think I can be bothered.

Even after the first game I thought we'd still dispose of them in the replay but not so sure after Saturday.

I agree the league is all but gone but we can raise our game so have plenty of hope regarding both cups.

very much in the same camp as the good Dr Dev. Not a CHANCE i'll be going down to ayr to watch our donkeys either playing pish and winning or playing pish and losing. It's too cold for it this year!

Hope we win for those who are there though!

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say we won't take as many fans this time!

You'll be impressed when you arrive. It hasn't changed one little bit!

Like I said earlier though, our record there is good, only 2 defeats in the last 18 league games there.

I'll be there - not often this season will I make 3 consecutive matches, let alone 3 in a week!!!

The last time we were down there midweek it was pishing it down, blowing a gale and Hugh Dallas cocked it up big style whereby big Dodsy knowcked it back to Alan Main IIRC with his thigh and Dallas gave a pass back against us, only for the linesman to come to the rescue and have to tell Dallas twice he was wrong!!!

I'm not all that confident of victory, even although we have Ryan Stevenson available and undoubtedly motivated....

With Varielle missing we will probably go one up front and try to frustrate Saints, but it will be a good cup tie regardless. Maybe even extra-time and penalties? :?

I hope you all enjoy your trip down to an old school fitba' ground :D

In typical Saints fashion, I think we will win 4 or 5-0. This will paint a pretty picture at McD and lead all the fans into another false optimism that we may in actual fact be about to turn this bloody massive corner. It will also get folk off Coyles back for another few weeks - until we are let down by another unimpressive display.

I can see that as this is a very important match, Coyle will only play fit players. Hardie, Scotland and Savo( with only six inches of bandages around his knee) will pass late fitness tests. Stanic will be declared fit and will use a zimmer frame for his dead leg.

Saints will play with the ball in the Ayr, ground passing being ruled out as there is an unknown green substance on the pitch.

I actually had a nightmare. Coyle played only fit players and the ball on the ground. The movement of fit players found space and with passing to a moving player opening more space we had shots on target at their goal and even scored three times. Must see the doctor !!!!!!

I believe it was he who said he went away from this forum because nobody would agree with him about Coyle not being the man for the job. Oh how I wish he'd never come back. :?

Ayr United v St Johnstone

Ayr United midfielder Paul Weaver will hope to shake off a bout of flu and start the Scottish Cup replay.
Ryan Stevenson returned from suspension to play at the weekend and is pushing for a place against his former club.

St Johnston boss Owen Coyle hopes to pick from the same squad which lost 3-2 to Livingston on Saturday.

Saints striker Steven Milne is to have an operation on a knee injury and faces a period on the sidelines. Goran Stanic is doubtful with a dead leg.

Just in from the game, couple of quick thoughts. Saints worked pretty hard for the win in terrible conditions, the wind was wild. Stevo scored a cracker about ten minutes after we'd given him dogs abuse (he chose to reply with a gesticulation behind his back). Goran talked himself into a stupid booking and had to be pretty careful for the rest of the match. Peaso (my MOM) and Scotland worked hard up front throughout the match and our best moves came when Scotland managed to get hold of the ball and get turned. Unfortunately conditions combined with their pressing tactics meant that the ball was rarely under control.

It was a fairly decent match though and a good result in the end. However, I do feel results like this just paper over the cracks and that long term we still have problems. It's easy to say, "second in the league, semi-final of CIS Cup, fourth round of Scottish Cup" but as a team we are still under-performing and could do so much better.

Temple Reports up now - basically still the same old problems we saw at Livi but tonight Ayr tired late on and were forced to defend more. Both keepers played well although Cat had little to do for the last 10 mins of normal time and extra-time. Jason and Peaso were fine and McLaren and Jacko contributed a lot but again our midfield let us down - Sheerin, Hardie and Mensing were all poor on the night and McInnes seemed to spend half his time on his arse.

As for the bookings most were harsh but have to agree with Dev - Goran almost lost the plot big time. Given the way the ref was dishing out the cards he could easily have earned himself a 2nd yellow.

Still we're through, but never mind Hibs in the semi, I'm more nervous that the youthful midfield won't recover for Airdrie at the weekend.

Well, I'm not sure what the radio said but I thought we throughly deserved that.

We opened well and took a deserved lead when Jason fired a free-kick under the wall and past a stationary McGeown. How the referee never booked their player for the challenge on Lombardo in the build up, I'll never know.

The wind was with Ayr (no pun intended!) in the first-half and they used it to their advantage. KC dealt with everything superbly though. His handling was top notch. The referee booked Lawrie for his first challenge then James and Stanic were booked for dissent as the homer in charge gave us nothing, including blowing for a free-kick when advantage would have seen Peaso in on goal.

With the wind at our backs in the second-half I was happy but then remembered Saturday although we started well and forced some early corners after winning none in the first half.

KC had to look sharp to beat Varielle (why was he playing?) to the ball but could do nothing about their equaliser, which Hollywood couldn't have scripted better. A hopeful cross holds up in the wind (as did nearly every pass) and Stevo takes a touch to lift it over James before volley low past KC from 20 yards. Cracking strike to be fair to him. KC honestly had nothing to do for the rest of the half but Saints only really clicked when McLaren was introduced for Sheerin.

As the game wore on McGeown began to shine, saving Ayr on numerous occasions.

The first period of extra-time saw Ayr creep slightly back into things with the wind advantage but Saints still looked in control. It was in the second period though that it looked like we were up against a possessed man as time-and-time again McGeown denied Saints the winner they deserved.

With the clocking ticking down, Peaso picked the ball up 25 yards from goal and turned his man before catching the ball sweetly to fire it straight down the middle to deceive McGeown and set Saints up for Falkirk.

Positives were the effort from all the players and several good performances, notably from McInnes, the two strikers, Cuthbert and the two subs. Mensing looked so much more comfortable in the middle when Jacko came on. I think OC seriously needs to look at the midfield still though as we looked much better when we had the pace of McLaren and Jackson out wide, although Ayr were tiring to be fair.

Well worth the trip.

Strange thing was McManus went over at one point, almost tapped Goran on the shoulder then walked away. At the very least he should have been standing next to his teammate ready to drag him off if he didn't calm down.

Can we talk about James for a second...

It's hard to argue with the fact that when he's been in the side recently we've picked up more points than when he's not been, but my god he's such an incompetent defender and McManus is so poor when playing alongside him. If that pair play together against Gretna, I won't go and watch us mauled for 4 or 5.

I think Peaso is the type of striker in the Kris Boyd mould. Will score loads of goals but will miss about 10 chances for every 1 that he does bury. That can be frustrating to watch as a fan, and probably the reason why I'm not so quick to credit him for performances like tonight. Hopefully he'll win me over soon enough, especially with Savo now sidelined. 8)

I think that's unfair on Mark McGeown who thwarted him on several occasions. The link up play between McLaren, Scotland and MacDonald towards the end was good. Potentially an excellent partnership between Jason and Peaso... Doubt it will last long though.

The guy at the back was hilarious! :***: :***:

We call that guy at the back "Tonerman". He has a history of ludicrous and long-winded shouts at the games and they often appear as if they've been prepared before the match. He has a distinctive shouting style where he puts huge gaps between each word and so he takes ages to get to the end - thereby getting the attention of an entire section of fans who only really catch the end of the rant and don't understand his original point. He was named Tonerman after his one and only amusing shout at a game of football. We were away at Motherwell in about 1999 and the referee happened to be Kevin Toner - our man wasn't impressed with his refereeing and shouted at him, "I've seen more decisive toner in my photocopier!" Amused me anyway! :***:

He's certainly more entertaining than the moaning postie anyway, he's a bawbag.

On the radio, it sounded like Stanic's booking was a mistake by the ref after the Ayr player clipped Stanic's heel, collided with him and went down. The ref probably thought Stanic fouled him and booked him for dissent as he tried to protest his innocence. The ref did seem to book Saints players for the slightest thing but then give no free kick when the Ayr players came in with rash challenges :?

Yeah! It was difficult to see fully but I think Goran's boot came off! Goran say saying how could he foul the guy when it was his heel that had been stepped on! Still should have kept his mouth shut though but the ref was a homer, big style!

18-01-2007, 09:49 AM
Few thoughts from last night:

The first goal was a stroke of luck for us that we haven't been getting (certainly in the matches I have seen recently) in that Sheerin's clear handball was missed before the free kick was awarded. The free-kick was Ronaldinho-esque in that Scotland mishit it under the wall IIRC :***: This was evened up by the ref's complete inability to allow an advantage when Sheerin (or MacDonald) was fouled on the edge of the box and the ball broke to Scotland one on one with the goalie and onside, only for Mr Tumilty (or "twunt") to pull it back.

Ayr had the backing of the strong wind first half but defensively they didn't test Cuthbert with any shot's, although they tested him with a number of corners which he did very well at, catching and punching when required and commanding his area like many (including me) have been calling for!

Second half it was mainly all Saints and either through a lack of composure (Mensing) or excellent shot stopping by McGeown (from Scotland, Peaso and Mensing) stopped us from going 2 up. Stevo got a goal out of nothing with a fine strike totally against the run of play and that was basically it for the 90 minutes. The game should never have got to the stage of going to extra time, although the defence and goalkeeper of Ayr deserve a lot of credit for this.

Extra time, Saints finally got the ball on the deck and played some nice intricate football with lots of good passing, but Ayr always were able to get something in the way of the ball, until Peaso beat the defender well and hit a cracking shot which beat the keeper straight down the middle of the goal as he started to go down early expecting the shot to go to his left.

Deserved victory, Cuthbert was superb without having any shots to deal with (it wouldn't surprise me if at most Ayr had 2 shots on target the whole 120 minutes). Defensively, James made a difference last night as it allowed McManus to be at his more comfortable position on the right side of centre defence. The midfield (as Radford has pointed out) went missing again after the first 15 minutes until width was introduced on both sides in the shape of McLaren and Jackson (who was lucky not to be shown a red card for a 2 footed lunge in front of the open terracing, let alone get away without a foul at all). McInnes was very comfortable all night and it has been a while since I have seen a central midfielder in a Saints shirt as confortable on the ball (Paul Kane was probably the last one). Up top, Peaso and Scotland worked very well together, both making intelligent runs ahead of the defenders or dropping off the defenders into the "hole" between midfield and strikers to collect the ball and try to find a telling pass or shot from distance.

Well, I'm not sure what the radio said but I thought we throughly deserved that.

I listened to the match on the radio and whilst relieved we scored to go through obviously, also from listening thought we had played well and had just come up against an inspired keeper. This seems to mirror the thoughts of those at the game.

However the analysis from the "experts" was shocking, completely unbalanced. From listening to them you would come away thinking Ayr were really unlucky and had played football reminiscent of 1970 era Brazil.

sportssound was shocking seemed that they only wanted ayr to win, would break into buddy banter about how cold they were and other crap then break out of it every time ayr were on the ball only to go back when saints got the ball back.

It was interesting in the radio commentary when one of their players (can't remember if it was Caddis or Wardlaw), who'd already been booked, continued to go heavy into the tackles and the commentators were ready for the player to be sent off only for the ref not to even give a free kick, let alone take any action against the player

A decent win by most accounts! C'mon the Saintees.

Another Tonerman classic here, we were beating Falkirk, must have been years ago, im sure it was a game at Ochilview. Anyway, after we score he belted out, 'Hey - Yoggie, I - guess - some - things - are - hard - to - bear!' Was pissin myself!

In all cup competitions, the referee and assistants are appointment for the tie, not just the first match in question. The replay is an extension of the tie so the 3 (or 4 if an SPL side is involved) officials will get first option on officiating the replay - replacements obviously are sought if any are not available.

I don't have much to add to what others have said. Not a brilliant overall showing by any means, but getting through the tie was the main thing and that goal was achieved.

Great show from Cat last night - totally assured coming for some dangerous and awkward wind-assisted crosses. If he keeps that up, Halliwell won't get another sniff. McLaren and Jackson made the difference when they came on for the ineffective Sheerin and Hardie. Jacko's pace put the wind up them, and he really has to start on the right hand side in the next game. McLaren seemed to want to keep the ball on the deck as well which was really refreshing, as it was obvious we needed to do that in the conditions - just unfortunate that the Ayr marking was so tight as well, otherwise we'd have managed to do that a lot more.

That's great news, I'm glad he is starting to perform as we need midfielders to step up to the mark. Considering Sheerin has been slightly off form for at least a month perhaps he may start Mclaren on saturday?

I would but in place of Hardie or Mensing more than Sheerin possibly, although in saying that in September we played Sheerin in the middle and McLaren on left against Airdrie and they were both very poor.

The problems were still there with the midfield last night but we looked much better with Jacko and McLaren in there, although the Ayr players were dead on their feet by that time.

Oddly enough, I see the problem with Sheerin as being more to do with what's going on around him. I've always seen him as a major confidence player - he comes on to a game when the players around him are.

Jacko's preferred position is up front, but I'd start him instead of Hardie on the right of midfield next game to try and inject some pace, playing Mensing and McInnes (who didn't do too badly last night) in the middle. That running game might give Sheerin something to work with? As long as McLaren keeps coming off the bench and producing something, he'll get his starting chance.

I thought McInnes was quiet but very effective last night. He doesn't stand out like Sheridan and isn't as much of a terrier but he uses the ball so much better. Hopefully in front of the home fans on Saturday he can make a good impression.

Hes a prat, says nothing postive about Saints, total disgrace

Ive yet to see McLaren, but can he not play on the right as well as the left? Didnt he play for a while on the right v Partick in his debut and set up at least one goal?

Worth a try or is he just 100% a left sided player?

He played a couple of one-twos and worked himself onto the right from where he cut in for the goal but he was never playing on the right.

I think he'd be lost over there to be honest and think we should focus on getting him settled in on the left before trying anything like that.

FWIW, I do think he could play in behind the strikers if we played 3-5-2 and he played there a bit for Airdrie last season.

Looked a totally different player so it'll be interesting to see if it was the change in position or just an upturn in form. I didn't think he'd do anything on the right but he was easily our best player. Didn't play as a winger as he came inside all the time but still a more than useful option to have.

Just noticed this - it's the fact the wrong personnel was dropped to allow him to return when he's not even fit!! If he needs bandaged up that much, needs to be in the injury news then he shouldn't be playing - simple as. Himself and Coyle should recognise that he's not fit, the more he plays carrying injuries the longer everyone suffers in the long run.

against Ayr, i think he put us under pressure at the back with a few mistakes - mind you, i wasn't under the influence watching his performance on wednesday.

True but if Kenny Black is reading it as James / Hardie whoever are doubtful it at least keeps the Saints lineup a bit less predictable and harder to plan against.
