Its upon us the big one, which will either make(ish) or break our season!
A must win for us but to be honest I can only really see a draw, there will be goals in this one for sure!

The one thing that does give me confidence in this game is the slowness of the Gretna back division. Morais may have a field day if played.

I would like to see us use both Morais and McLaren on either wing as I think both their pace could give Gretna some real problems.
My preferred line up would be :-
Cat
Mensing------------Ando-------------McManus---------------Stanic
Morais-------------McInnes-----------Sheerin--------------McLaren
--------------------Peaso---------------Scotland--------------------

Airdrie fans commented that McLaren played on the right wing for them on a few occasions but preferred to come inside a lot. Therefore, could this work:
Cuthbert
Lawrie Anderson McManus/James Stanic
Morais McLaren McInnes Sheerin
Scotland MacDonald
I can't see Coyle playing that formation though. I think he'll play:
Cuthbert
Mensing McManus James Stanic
Morais/McLaren Hardie McInnes Sheerin
Scotland MacDonald

Down at Raydale we were overrun in the middle of the park. They have big guys like Paartalu and Nicholls so IMO the first thing we need to do is match up to them in there. I appreciate it's our home match but we need guys in the middle of the park who will be prepared to mix it with these guys. That means Hardie and McInnes for me. Truthfully, in a midfield four I think Willie McLaren would get lost in a game like this.
Another thing to consider is that we looked better with a back three in the second period down there so that might be something to consider. I don't think the Gretna defence is particularly slow. Canning and Innes are both excellent centre-backs, the boy Grainger isn't slow but Townsley should be targetted. Shame he doesn't play at left-back as Morais could cause him real problems.
As well as the midfield, David Graham tore as apart down there and his pace in the left hand channel against Goran and James is obviously a worry. Possibly another reason to switch to a back three so there's always someone spare to cover.
Whether folk admit it or not, Gretna are a good side, the number of goals they've scored shows that and to have any chance IMO we need to first stop them playing then we can give them something to worry about. They've dropped 8 points in the last 14 matches so we need to show them respect.
I actually have every confidence OC will get his lineup spot on and we'll win the game.

Agree with Radford, all of it.
McLaren would be physically not up to it.
They are dangerous coming through midfield.
They are strong on the left, where we are weak at defending.
I like Stanic, but he isin't a strong tackler.

i would line up:
cuthbert
lawrie mensing james stanic/dyer
hardie mciness sheerin mclaren
peaso scotland
stanic has been poor defensivly dyer is good defensivly but not that great going forward so if coyle wants to play defensive dyer or attacking stanic.
I thought we played well with hardie out wide since the ball is played over there from cuthbert high so hardie areal threat is something we should use,
sheerin is better use in the middle with more of the ball and he can take more shots from the centre.

Looks like I am gonig to be in Perth for this one, and if the day out pass is still valid then I shall be there.
I havent seen Saints in the flesh since the win over Scumdee Utd, and I would settle for a scrappy win in this one. Gretna's goal difference is frightening and they have certainly come on leaps and bounds since the start of the season, however I am sure OC will treat this game as the make or break that it is and we shall get the 3 points.
I am all for a bit of Alan Main baiting, would be a laugh if nothing else.

With Rangers out of all competitions this is the first time for a long time that Saints have kept the fans involved with three major games in a row in all three competitions. It would be amazing if we remained in the hunt in all three.
I think we could beat Gretna if the defence holds steady and the midfield grip the game. Our attack will score.
We've nothing to lose in the other two games, might as well have a GO! 8)

i don't agree with mensing as a right back so i would have lawrie back or anderson there if coyle decides 2 risk james.
would like to see morais get a start on the right and mclaren would have to be on the left as sheerin is more affectual in the centre.
i would drop mcinnes and have hardie and sheerin both in the centre for this one as hardie does get 'stuck in' and we could always do with a bit of sheerin's class in big games.
also i'm no entirely convinced about mcinnes.
----------------cuthbert
lawrie/anderson--mcmanus--anderson/james---stanic
morais-----hardie-----sheerin-----mclaren
---------------scotland----peaso

Unless of injuries, I can't see there being many changes for this game although I said that prior to the Airdrie
I would go with:
Cuthbert
Mensing/Lawrie McManus James Stanic
McLaren Hardie McInnes Sheerin
Jason Peaso
or
Cuthbert
McManus James Anderson
McLaren Mensing McInnes Hardie Sheerin
Jason Peaso
McInnes, Hardie and Sheerin will be the key players for us and I think McInnes will show his class in midfield. I can see Coyle replacing Peaso with Morais after an hour and moving McLaren up front with Jason
Radford 72
24-01-2007, 06:21 PM
Steve, I don't think McLaren has anything near the required defensive capabilities to play at wing-back, especially on his less natural side where he needs to come inside all the time to use his left foot. You are gonna leave your centre-back so exposed if he plays there IMO. In a 3-5-2, I think McLaren could slot in behind the strikers if you had two grafters like Hardie and McInnes behind him. That would obviously leave Sheerin out in the cold though as I don't think he has the pace to play left wing-back.

This Saints side always plays a better game against the better teams. The 3-3 against Gretna was a case in point, with two decent sides trying to play football, the talented players coming to the fore. Sheerin played well that day, and I expect him to be one of the important players again for us on Saturday - God knows, if he or anyone else can't raise their game for this then we really do have problems. Cap'n Kev HAS to play as captain, if only for the on-field influence.
Nothing too adventurous, I'd line up 4-4-2. I feel Anderson at right back gives us a bit more forward momentum instead of Lawrie or Mensing in that position. Plus, Ando has more pace to cope with Gretna's left wing threat:
Cat (Main :***: )
Ando-McManus-Cap'nKev-Gordon
Felipe-Gunther-McInnes-Wizard
Peaso-Jason
If we are winning, Jacko for Peaso and Oor Wullie for Sheerin in the 2nd half should do it.

If anyone's got time to spare today before they go to the game, there's a huge inflatable ball in the St.Johns Centre from CIS and its there for fans to write good luck messages to the team ahead of the Hibs game. I understand that there'll be another ball at McD before the match today for fans to do the same. The balls will then be placed beside the pitch for the players to see as they come out onto the pitch on Wednesday

Saints could be in for a frustrating afternoon with Gr£tna only needing to draw to extinguish any lingering hopes we might have of catching them.
I expect that they will be content to sit back and try and catch Saints on the counter. Obviously this is not their normal game plan which could work in our favour. This game is similar in many respects to the famous Airdrie game all those years ago and is very much in the do or die category.
There may be a red card or two and I think the first goal in this game will be critical. Saints to edge it by one goal.
I would like to see big Del mixing it up front for us!

Gretna are so catchable, they are no place near the team St Mirren were last season or Falkirk the season before.

Good win. Should have been 3 or 4 but we sat back & let them come to us. Never too sure though if it us sitting back or teams coming at us . They had 3 or 4 up front later on so it could have been them coming on to us.
All played well today but can`t see how Mensing got sponcers MoM.
Good performance from Saints today. Gretna are pish!!! They had one chance, and that was their goal, which was a cracker from Barrau.
James scored with a cracker, a volley with his right foot, which floated top corner. Scotland then hit the post with a beast form about 30-35 yards. We controlled the game, but as usual never had the final ball.
Anyone see what hapenned when we scored. I noticed Alexander and Irons, pritty much shagging each other when Gretna scored right in front of the saints bench, then when we scored Jim Weir and McLaren, made sure they were quiet, then it seemed to kick off, but couldnt see from the main Stand.
Thought McLaren had another cracking game, and was dissapointed when he got the chop, especially when Hardie, didn't look fit (not complaining now)
Lilley had a good start, wins plenty of headers up front, and works hard, but he did give the ball away for their goal, and nearly lost us our season....lucky for him Main let hardies volley go in :***:
couldnt understand Mensing getting MoM, again i thought he was the worst player on the park, but he was worst of a good bunch.
Overall a Happy Saintee (makes a change)

I have a question...
How can a defence who played so poorly against Airdrie play so phenomenally well against Gretna? There was not a failure in that backline today. Kevin James sailed through, upping his game 100%, scoring a magnificent goal and getting his head to everything. Allan McManus ran the line, mopping up everything and the two full backs played considerably well, especially Goran who had a pacey player to mark and Mensing kept himself back and in position when it counted the most.
The midfield, McLaren again started out right and again played well, adding some much needed pace and looking quite comfortable although choosing to cut inside onto his left more often than not. McInnes ran the show in midfield and is a seriously contender for Man of the Match. He has improved 100% since first joining us and looks a much more rounded player than Darren Sheridan. If before people couldn't see what Martin Hardie brought to the team, they can't have failed to notice it today. He was immense - for someone not blessed with pace he knows how to be in the right place at the right time and burst a gut trying to catch passes. Paul Sheerins defensive abilities are improving and he proved a real asset to Goran in the later stages of the match when dealing with their pacey blondie.
Up front, Peaso had a fairly quiet day but played alongside a man possessed in Jason. If ever a player deserved some goals in a match it was him today. His thunderous 30 yard strike was unbelievably well struck and he was unlucky to be denied by the woodwork. Why hasn't he been taking more free kicks? I thought it was in for sure! Main didn't know what had hit him with this boy - he chased everything and linked up really well with Goran/Sheerin and latterly Lilley. Onto the man himself, one of the most impressive debuts I've seen. He came into a team who were firing on all cylinders and he played like a real target man, winning a good percentage of aerial tackles, and fighting for the shirt. Such passion!
I think Gretnas first real test of us came in the second half and even then it wasn't great. Was McMenamin playing today? I missed the team announcements. They looked nothing special, but then so many fans of so many teams have said that this season and Gretnas main asset has always been that they are clinical and effective. They were neither of those things today. Their most threatening player was the blondie, who could run but do little else, most notable when he ran the ball out himself. Their goal was a fine strike from a trialist. It was a bit of a sunken heart moment but the desire and urgency was there from Saints and we did not deserve anything less than 3 points from that match.
Martin Hardie - Legend.

Great performance, and a game which should have been wrapped up much earlier.
James scored a brilliant volley
We dominated the game, Gretna's first shot was after 62 minutes, then they bloody scored with their only other attempt.
After that, we rallied and fought back for a thoroughly deserved win.
If we play like that against Hibs, we're in the CIS Final.

There must have been 100 of them at the kiosk at that time as I took this at 10 past 3 and I have counted 196

Well i am delighted - Gretna had about two chances on goal today and were looking like a team that had nothing to play for.
Some beautiful football was played today and we should have had at least 4/5 goals.
Martin Hardie, Paul Sheerin, Kevin James, Allan McManus, Bill McLaren and Goran Stanic were fantastic today i thought - much improved for the lot of them, and Hardie/McLaren maintaining their high performances.
The most nervous last few minutes EVER - and the first hurdle is completed.
4 sleeps!!! I am so excited already, arm warmers are in the football bag already....i wore them up to, and including Ibrox where we played well...hadn't worn them since when we were paaaash then wore them again today!

and i think you can tell how much it means to Martin Hardie every game. Committed to the hilt in his celebrations and trying to gee up the crowd - he always gives us a wee motivating "Aye, mon then" gesture. Love it.

Yes and BH just for you Lilley does bring something different and Temple are you watching a Saints player one many balls in the air today and yes he was a forward :***: :***:
Yup - he looked a decent player. Still think Hardie won more in the air though :***:  Bit worried about the knock Peaso took in the first half though - hope he's ok for Wednesday.
Can't complain about the performance and for a change it was a solid team performance rather than relying on Scotland etc. We still seemed to go off the pace around the hour mark but the defence was excellent and McLaren is looking like a natural at right midfield.
Three excellent goals as well - only disappointment was that Jason's rocket didn't go in :***:
As for Gretna, they looked very ordinary at times and defensively were all over the place. Psychologically, this result might mean a lot more to the league campaign that just the three points.

I was won over in terms of commitment today - i had been starting to doubt a few of the players for it over the past month or so. But last week and today has seen us have that lady luck.
I didn't know what to do, went mental, looked at the players, looked over to see the Hospitality going mental then a nice gesture to Rowan and Co!!
Best thing yet? Today, Mr Rowan "Greetin faced, bubblin, stroppy, temperamental" Alexander, realised there was mroe than two players in our team - and he couldn't even organise his shower of shite to contend with them!

One of the best games i have been to in ages. Not only was the result great today, the performance from the players was immense. As Temple says that performance will have a big infulence over them psychologically, bring on the collapse!!
I thought the defence was terrific today, McManus was just class, he semmed to gain an extra yard of pace today. McInnes dominated the midfield, won tackles and played some great creative passes. If only Scotland would play like that every week, when he is in that form there is not a player in this division that can touch him.
As others have mentioned earlier, the team-spirit shown by the boys today was great, any doubters that think we dont have the hunger to win the league, would have been proved wrong. Alexander and Irons are two of the biggest idiots ever - hopefully someone was filming their antics after they equalised, i would show it to all our players before every match - if they were not motivated by the oppurtunity to get it right up these two idiots, then they never would be!
More of the same on Wednesday, the treble is still on!! :D :D

Superb game today - loved every minute of it. We played some fantastic football and always tried to play it on the deck. Gretna didn't know how to handle us, we deserved to win by 3-4 easily.
Lilley looked good up front, ran his arse off for the time he was on the pitch. Scotland was superb and his effort from the free kick was one of the best strikes I've seen never go in. I was celebrating the goal - I couldn't believe it never went in.
I loved the passion Hardie was showing today and he deserved that goal more than anyone, brilliant finish.
So now the standard has been set by both the players and the crowd (there was singing in the ormond side of the east stand :o ) - lets keep it up!

Very liitle to add to what has been said - I just hope that was Lilley have one of his poor games, because if it was, he is going to be a tremendous player for us. :D
Great result, still buzzing.
Had the scarf and top on in Tesco Corstorphine Edinburgh (where I work)- the Hibees are getting it tight!
This is seriously on now, because Gretna looked as if they didn't give a flying feck about their team, I think the big turnout and singing from us must have disheartened them- shown them what it is like to play for a proper football club, and not some flash in the pan joke of a toy for an arsehole millionaire.
If anybody got a photo of Irons and Alexander humping each other then that would be brilliant.
The looks on them when we scored were great- they could not believe it!
Alan Main looked as if he'd much rather have been in our goal today as well- a couple of times it seemed as if he was wanting us to score, when Scotland closed him down and almost won the ball then when he punted the ball out for a throw in when he had plenty of time to control it.
He was the only Gretna player who didn't celebrate their goal much either- did anyone clock his reaction to this?
we was braw today! more on wednesday folks

Enjoyed announcing their goal in a monotone then giving it laldy to Hardie :***:
Superb, am still buzzing and to see Chris Smith (the groundsman) dancing a jig after the match was worth it's weight in gold!!
Anyone enjoy the celebration music????
Which song was used as the goal music today? Couldn't hear it due to the noise- it's been Madness recently which is an excellent choice.
The Skids at the end were great as well, but any chance of playing this right after the final whistle? I was almost out of the ground when it came on.
Good Choice Though.
Are Hydro Electric a main sponsor again? The half time challenge was good today.

I'm still on a high after yesterday.
What a game. Immensely proud of the team - total application and effort from start to finish, and we managed to play some nice stuff as well.
MoM for me was Jason, who put in an incredible shift, providing a real handful for their centre back pair with his trickery and movement, then drifting out to the flanks to confuse them, causing the left back real problems on a few ocassions. Did anybody else think that we were also watching one of the few games this season when the loose balls were actually falling for Saints players instead of the opposition?
Gretna look a shadow of the side we played earlier in the season, their midfield engine room has left the building with Tosh, and they looked a really tippy-tappy lightweight outfit to be honest. Could be interesting when they come up against the likes of Clyde, Dundee and the Diamonds...
Obviously, we've only narrowed the gap, and have to make sure that we keep on winning, including the game in hand, but Gretna have it all to lose I feel. There is no doubt that this result will give us a massive boost going into the two games against SPL opposition, particularly Hibs. The type of game will be similar to yesterday against these two I feel, and although it will be difficult, we certainly shouldn't be going into it with trepidation or any nervousness.
Final two thoughts. What an incredible sound in the East Stand when Hardie scored. I haven't heard a roar like that for years, even when we scored against the Arabs. Secondly, what the f*** do the Gretna management team think they are playing at? That "celebration" stunt when they equalised was tantamount to incitement to riot, and they should be reported to the SFA for bringing the game into disrepute at the very least.

Thought we were excellent.
Everyone in the back four was immense. I think we saw yesterday why OC has persisted with James and McManus. Mensing did his job and Goran, as well as defending gave them no end of bother going forward.
In the middle McInnes ran the show, destroyed everything Gretna tried to construct and sent us forward. In addition he has the midfield further forward and not sitting on the back four. Well until near the end of games. Hardie was absolutely everywhere. His attitude sums up what I want to see in a player and although not the paciest he can see and complete passes. McLaren now has confidence and think that is the big difference. Sheering grew as the game went on.
The front two worked very hard but didn't get the goals they deserved. Did I see really see Jason chase down back passes? His workrate meant their back four could not settle.
Lilley brings something different. Great movement. Once he set off down the left and opened a huge gap to the right. Is he cuptied?
Oh and compliments to SaintSam not only for her eyecatching post on here but also for the great laugh I had at her winding up the half-wits on on the Gretna board. Thanks Sam.

We have kept the league dreams alive for the next fortnight at least and we will need to hope Gretna slip up for us to take advantage - however, when they have done already we've failed to take advantage so far. Hopefully though, yesterday's result is indeed a turning point for Saints. We were back to playing some fantastic football yesterday and the subs Morais and Petal offered something different when they did come on.
This week is 3 cup finals, we've won one - lets hope we do the same in the other two!

We're officially back in the championship race!
As they say it could have been all over, it isn't now!.
If we beat Partick in our game in hand then it's only two wins that seperate us and one game is against them. That's four points under the old system. Saints have the bottle, they showed it yesterday, maybe just maybe Gretna will help us and crap it. They only have to lose one game while we win really and then it's in our hands.
