View Full Version : Airdrie United vs. Saints 13/03/07

When you haven't won away from home in the league for six months, the last place you want to go is a ground where you've yet to record a victory in six attempts. We never play well at New Broomfield and with the squad low on confidence and physically drained, Airdrie probably couldn't get us at a better time and indeed, probably couldn't get a better team to play this weekend.

It would be one of those little footballing quirks if we finally record a victory over them when we are most unlikely to but I can't see it and am definitely travelling more in hope than expectation. I think Coyle needs to make changes to his side. It's no longer a case of letting these guys play themselves into some form as they don't have the energy to do so.

Steven Anderson will be suspended after his red card on Tuesday and Kevin Rutkiewicz is still out and I'd guess Kevin James remains doubtful which leaves us with only Allan McManus from our four recognised centre-backs. Either Simon Mensing or Andy Lawrie will play alongside him, with the other at right back. Stanic needs a rest but bringing Willie Dyer into a makeshift defence probably isn't the best idea in the world.

Fil Morais will keep his place on the right of midfield after being one of the few players to come out of the Thistle games with any credit. It's then between McInnes, Hardie, Sheerin and McLaren for the other three slots but unfortunately McInnes is the only defensive minded player in the trio so will start the game and I'd guess Hardie will be in the middle with him along with Sheerin on the left.

I don't think any of the strikers are 100% fit although Lilley's only problem is match fitness, and the fact he's pony. MacDonald and Scotland can't give us more than an hour and Milne needs a bounce game although will have benefited from his 30 minutes on Tuesday. I'd probably start him and I think it's stupid risking Scotland and MacDonald so would throw Andy Jackson in, Coyle won't though.

My side therefore would be...

Cuthbert

Lawrie/Mensing - McManus - Lawrie/Mensing - Stanic

Morais - Hardie - McInnes :( - McLaren

Milne - Jackson

I'd like to have played Sheerin instead of McInnes but with a makeshift defence I think it'd leave us too exposed.

349 Saints fans at Firhill on Tuesday night, I'll be amazed if that many travel to Airdrie.

I think James will be back in the team on Saturday even if he has to hop up and down the pitch. It may sound ridiculous after Tuesday's performance but I think the rest of the starting XI will be exactly the same as Partick. I'm sure that those who played will want to make up for the defeat

McInnes hat-trick in a six nil away win.

Seriously, as you have stated there is a certain irony that would suggest Saints will win. I predict Saints to win with a clean sheet and McManus man of the match! :D

Thomas_sjfc

Heres my prediction

We'll go play our usual way we do away from home, go 1-0 up then sit back to deep Airdrie will equalize just before half time. Then in the 2nd half Airdrie will score a couple more, we will also get a player red carded.
Coyle will whine about the red card to all and sundry(even though we could all see it was red card), and claim we can still catch Gretna.

I normally go to the away games but couldnt make tuesday night which was maybe a good thing, also wont be able to make this game either. We need to win this if we dont i cant see us ever catching Gretna. Lets hope we get the win as surely we have to win a game away at some point.

They may well do Steve but do you think they are fit enough to play in a manner that would allow them to make amends?

Airdrie away is always a match I go to, but i have to admit I do fear the worst. Not only have we never won there but we always seem to play crap and i agree with who said we will get a someone sent off, if that doesnt happen we will give away a pen, one or the other always happens there. I hope to god i am wrong and we get a win but i really cant see it, and I will prob get slated for saying that but its my own opinion. I have been to Airdrie for every game we have played at New Broomfield and I havnt seen a good performance yet, but saying that I also hadnt seen us loose at Firhill untill Tuesday night so anything can happen.

The replacements you have in your XI aren't 100% fit either  Either way, you're going to have players who will need replaced after 60-70mins

We don't have 11 players that are 100% fit though. Savo is a naturally fit guy and will run his heart out for the team and a few days with a virus shouldn't affect young guys Jacko or McLaren too much.

If we are going to get 3 points, for pride and to break our record there then we have to get a very early goal and build on it rather than sit back.

If Airdrie go down i'd imagine their young boys will be wanting to leave so is a great chance for them to join the Airdrie side at the top end of the division!

We will have to watch their major threats like Holmes and MacDougall though.

Surely Mensing at centre back & Lawrie at right back would be the sensible move with McInness left back , in the dugout.

Whilst we have to get it right at the back to combat Gary Twigg  , it will be particularly interesting to see our attacking options today. This is surely a game McLaren must start against his old mob. I would love to see Jackson given a start as we should "rest" some of those battle weary strikers who are struggling badly at present.

...... as we should "rest" some of those battle weary strikers who are struggling badly at present.
That'll definitely happen now and I think they'll also be wanting a totally fit squad to pick from for the Semi. I might be wrong but I think they have an eye on the cup now and putting less emphasis on the league. They'll not say that but it makes sense not to continue playing injured players and get them fit foe one big effort.

Jason and Sheerin are on the bench today. Saints must be playing with two wingers as McLaren and Morais are both starting. Lawrie's on from the start but not sure if he or Mensing are playing in the centre. I didn't hear who was playing up front but I would imagine that it'll be Lilley and Peaso.

Come on Saints

The Real Saints
17-03-2007, 03:10 PM
Lilley's on the bench.

The starting 11 are:

Cuthbert
Lawrie
Stanic
Mensing
McManus
James
Morais
Hardie
MacDonald
McInnes
McLaren

Subs:
Jackson
Scotland
Lilley
Sheerin
Halliwell

3 strikers on the bench! I can only assume that Hardie is up front with Peaso, with a back four of Lawrie- James- McManus- Stanic, and a midfield of Morais- Mensing- McInnes- McLaren.
Strange choices from OC today.. Jason finally dropped! Where's Milne? 3 strikers on the bench! However, I'm hoping he'll prove my doubts to be wrong.

Least we are keeping it alive.....just....looking at Gretna's run in, it ain't exactly a piece of cake, and this away win today might well of gotten the monkey off out back, 2 home games versus the tinks then livi to win before a cruncher down at raydale.

Made life diffcult for ourselves at times with that one, but a win's a win. Hopefully it will give us confidence playing the other away games as well. Airdrie are a poor side, but caused us problems coming forward. Defence looked a bit disjointed at times with nobody prepared to take responsibility. Immobile and awkward midfield generally, and we seemed to be not making the most of having Morais on one wing and McLaren on the other. However, when we did get the ball out to Felipe, he was really causing them problems. His cross gave Hardie the header for the opener. Airdrie kept fighting, first to most things in the middle of the park with McInnes poor again (seems to spend more time holding his hands up in apology than getting it right...) They equalised when Holmes (looking more than a little offside TBH) gathered a great ball and fired a creacker past Cuthbert into the top corner. We played with better pace in the 2nd half, and Lilley made a difference when he came on for the ineffective Peaso. Forced a few corners, with Felipe causing them real problems and Oor Wullie showing some nice touches, and Jason sidefooted in from McLaren's corner. We had opportunities to wrap it up, but the whole team sat far too deep for the last five minutes - looked very shaky at times allowing Airdrie to attack us. MoM for me was Felipe Morais, with Goran also looking good coming forward. Thought the introduction of Lilley gave a bit more mobility up front too. Airdrie look a relegated team.

Temple reports up now - we got the points but it wasn't great stuff to watch and the tactics at the end were far too defensive against an Airdrie side that looked beat.

Credit to Owen for playing two wingers (although Wullie didn't get into it until the 2nd half) but McInnes in midfield was again too slow and Mensing looked off the pace again. Thank God we had James at the back though.

Martin Hardie has supposedly admitted to the press that he handled the ball into the back of the net for our opener!

Cancels out Holmes being miles offside for the equaliser though. He didn't even run from deep, he was on the line and went too early but the linesman was a good 10 yards behind play. A very soft winner from Airdrie's point of view but for once all of our players didn't attack the ball with Jason just peeling off and sidefooting home.

I thought it was probably a reasonable game for the neutral despite neither 'keeper really having a save to make. We've played a lot better away from home and lost or drawn but the side out their was pretty makeshift with Scotland and Sheerin only fit enough for places on the bench.

Kevin McDonald was the best player on the park in my opinion and the Airdrie midfield generally looked more mobile than ours in the centre of the park with McInnes well off the pace again. Our defence stepped up their performance though with one exceptional piece of defending from James standing out when the Airdrie striker was one-on-one with him but the big man just showed him outside then slide in to win the ball. Peter MacDonald should have buried his early chance and despite a few excellent runs he was generally below par.

Apart from a short spell down at Palmerston, that's the first time we've used the two wingers in tandem and they worked well although with McInnes in the centre it could leave us exposed if it's a long term plan.

Delighted to finally win at New Broomfield though and finally get this away hoodoo off our back. Gap could be four points before Gretna next play again!

Delighted with a win but we constantly make things hard for ourselves.

If coyle had waited for the "Blame the Referee" excuse today would have been the time to use it - an absolute walloper and missed a few blatant, blatant decisions.

Not even many talking points of the game, nobody was really up for it - half a bus taken through with us and even at that 3/4 of us just wanted to stay in the pub. Unusual attitude, especially me!

Glad to see Coyle's not afraid to move out his usual first names on the team sheet when off form but i wonder if it was injury doubts or he had given up as much as we all had after Tuesday?

Get McInnes out, he's pony.

Just a pity it has taken Coyle so long to change his starting line up!!

Think if he had done that after the Motherwell game then we may have only been 1/2 points tonight!!!

Bloody annoys me as he stated at every interview after motherwell game that he would make changes for the sake of the team etc etc

What happens - effectively the same starting 11 for about 5 games running - i feel that this has cost us the league.

Looking forward to seeing Kevin McDonald and Graeme Holmes in the blue of Saints though. Both looked excellent and I'd take MacDougall too!

They are not 30 something are they Kev.
Looks like we got a break today for a change but we have still lost too many easy games to go up.

Would rather have a season of ground out results like today than one of lack lustre games like Tuesday nights against Partick.

Well done to all the Saints players, staff and fans who attended yesterday for showing some resolve again - please keep it going in every game.

We weren't too bad... and I think any Saints fan would have taken any win to rid ourselves of the two terrible records we have, rather than a performance anyway.

McInnes is fast becoming a scape-goat though, that's not a good thing! He's not playing great, so fair enough come on here and say so, but the one thing I'd like to take issue with here, is the accusations that he doesn't care... if anyone saw him in the technical area, they couldn't possibly say that!

I think he needs a wee rest, or dropped to show him he's not irreplaceable, however, he's shown (before he got suspended) that he could do a job... perhaps as fans we're doing our usual 'all or nothing'... a player is either the greatest or the worst, and often each within weeks of each other... perhaps he played above himself for a while, or maybe he's just out of form just now?

I quite agree with you Kev. The abuse some of our players get from our own fans is beyong belief to me. Mclaren is another that one numpty near me abused throughout the game at Airdrie. Even when McLaren set up a good scoring opportunity in the second half this tw@t still said "aye, yer still rubbish Mclaren"... unbelievable. To cap it all this pillock did not understand that a player could not be offside at a throw-in. I really should have moved seat!! Trouble was I could not move far enough away to be out of earshot.

I heard said idiot as well. It was only McLaren he was singling out. Totally pointless! He should put all his effort into abusing the linesman, who incidentally was former Scotland cricket captain George Salmond!

a really sad element to this numpty is that he had his young son with him - the language this poor lad had to hear from his father was embarassing. It was not so much the words he used but the sheer vitriol he put into them. The youngster was so excited to see the non-playing team members down the front of the stand too. He clearly thought them all stars. I hope dad does not dent that enthusiasm with his slagging.

Sounds a bit like a man who confronted myself and a friend of mine at the home game vs Hamilton Academical because we asked him to, shut up, shall we say? :***:

Willie McLaren had been playing on the right, and he was giving him abuse for the duration of the match due to the fact that he wouldn't hit the ball with his right foot. He didn't seem to even know that Willie McLaren was actually a left-footed left-winger. He had a young boy with him too.

One of the biggest morons I've ever come across in my life - it would not surprise me if it was the same person. He even used the immortal line "I pay my money, I can slag whoever I want".
