McANESPIE & PATERSON RELEASED

30 DECEMBER 2005

Kieran McAnespie (pictured) and Scott Paterson this morning said their farewells to colleagues after being informed that their contracts, up in January, were not being renewed.

Both players have been badly hampered by injury during their attempts to convince Owen Coyle that they were worth a longer-term deal. In Kierans case, the injury came during a pre-season match at Inverurie while Paterson had battled his way to fitness only to suffer another serious injury in the derby at Dens Park in November.

Coyle has told the Saints Official Website this afternoon, 'Its very disappointing for all parties. They are smashing lads with plenty to offer when fit but I simply cant afford to have two players on the books who may not be able to make a contribution in the second half of the season. Of course, they go with the best wishes of everyone at the Club.

Feckin hell at the third attempt here is the full article, blimin comma's etc are not welcomed on this board eh?

Probably to be expected really. Looks like both players were going to struggle to regain full fitness in the new year, so this will free up their wages and hopefully allow us to bring in a couple of quality players in their place.

Still, its a shame because in my opinion they were both guys who, if fully fit, could have contributed something to the squad. While James and Rusty have been excellent, their distribution isn't always great and Paterson was one of the best passing centre-halfs i've seen. He would have been good cover for the rest of the season. As for McAnespie, he was probably the only out-and-out winger we had in our squad, and just for that he would have been an asset if injury free.

Agreed, i reckon they could've done us a job if it were not for their injuries, still it's 2 crocks off our wage bill, oh and good luck to them wherever they end up, sure they will get clubs.

Sorry to see them go but that's the harsh reality of football these days. Mind you going on past form Keyring will probably be back around 2009 :***:

I don't think this was unexpected due to their long term record of injury problems. They are both good players if fit but we really need to bring in players who will be available to play and holding on to Paterson and Keyring might restrict this. There is a very strong rumour from someone very close to the club  that we are bringing in two players.

I think we need a wide player to give us an out-ball and to help give more supply to the forwards.

I just hope the club have done things properly and we're not going to end up with another Allan Ferguson situation.

I see what you are saying Radford but players can't have it both ways. They won control over contracts under Bosman and as such Clubs have to look at things these players could easily have been out of the game since August but the club gave them 6 months to prove their worth and sadly due to injuries they haven't been able to.

Keyring, and John O'Neil, have gone on trial with Gretna for a week.

Take it you will be changing your avatar then? :***:

Gretna give trial to veteran pair
Former Falkirk midfielder John O'Neil and ex-St Johnstone defender Kieran McAnespie are on trial with Gretna.
The veteran pair have been released during the January transfer window.

But Gretna manager Rowan Alexander wants to strengthen his squad to maintain their lead in the Scottish Second Division.

O'Neil, 34, joined Falkirk from Hibernian in 2003, while McAnespie, 36, had been at McDiarmid Park since 2004.

I am sure Keiran will love this from the BBC site :***:

He would have been injured cover for the rest of the season - the point about cover is that they are the ones meant to be fit to take over from the injured/suspended first teamers!
