Anyone heading down for this? I was going to go but am not so sure I could face it now, especially if they win the title against us.

Obviously the fragile state of the squad in terms of injuries, and the semi a week on Saturday will affect team selection, but I stll think we should go for the kill.

john1962

I think is the time we need to go. Turn up and support as much as we can. Let Gretna see that winning isn't the only reason to support your team. I will definitely be there.

In the event that Gretna do win Lets go there and

1. show them what supporting a team is really all about get behind the team for ninety minutes
2. If they do win show them what being dignified in defeat is like.

Or we could go there and win delay there title party for another week and also ensure that there title party the next week is somewaht overshadowed by us beating Celtic.:?

No doubt though if we do either of the above someone from Gretna will be in the media calling us all bitter for daring to upset their party

I'll be there cheering us on... seems like we are always destined to be the invitees to other folks parties... it gets hard to take, but hey, part and parcel of being a Saintee.

On Saturday I thought this game could be massive and was questioning why it wasn't all-ticket. Now, I can't see many Saints fans making the effort, especially if Gretna beat Airdrie tomorrow night.

Amazingly, if Airdrie do us (and themselves) and favour and we win on Saturday, we're back to 4 points with 9 to play for, although that will effectively be 5 considering their goal difference.

I see OC and Martin Hardie have effectively conceded the title in the media this morning so maybe with the pressure off we can get a few results.

I'm going because I made an arrangements to meet up with a mate who now lives in Kendall. Staying the night down there for a bevvy or two. Have to be honest and say that if I had seen the second half on Saturday before making plans for the game I might not have bothered.

Anymore going down??

After having doubts about wether i owuld go or not (i NEVER have that attitude when it comes to football!) i will be going. It's our last away trip, one last chance to indulge in that long road trip banter that is always created! even although i am missing the return trip! :(

Any team news apart from Milne and Rutkiewicz along with Mensing suspended? I predict we will hear of Hardie, James being a doubt....

I was at the Airdrie v Gretna game last night and hopefully OC was too as he will have been encouraged. Gretna are going to stumble over this finishing time and it's frustrating in the extreme that this team has finished ahead of us. Looking at duffers like Grady playing for them last night makes me wonder what has gone wrong for us.

Airdrie were on top for much of the match but the big 'keeper for Gretna was rock solid. The two centre backs will win everything in the air and the boy Barr was having a good game until he lost the plot and got himself sent off for a two footed lunge on Lovering, although to be fair Lovers dived in as well. Not sure who they have to replace him now Townsley has gone.

I'm convinced OC will start Fil and tell him to get at Skelton at left back who was terrible, and Hardie will drop out there to win everything in the air against him.

Their midfield never got into things and Jenkins was hooked at half time. Paartalu has a massive long throw but did nothing else. David Graham is lively and we'll have to be very wary of his pace on the break but Grady and McMenamin were anonymous.

If they play like they did last night, we'll have to turn in our worst performance of the season not to win.

I'm the same - sat last weekend wondering if it was worth it but can't see me sitting in the house this weekend listening to the radio. Besides I missed the first Raydale match so might as well go down and see it once.

I barely even remember the game last time i was down there - although the ground was a dump! I could save money and sit on the bus and watch it though if we are parked in the same place as last time!

Good day out is the only reason i am convinced to go down and when it comes to the crunch there is only a few games to the end of the season, and as much as we can't wait till they're finished i may as well make the most of them.

I'd give a few fringe players the chance to make an impact-

I'd play-
Halliwell
Lawrie, James, McManus, Dyer
Morais, Hardie, McInnes, McLaren
Lilley Scotland

Anderson, Stanic, Peaso, Doris, O Brien

A complete rest for Sheerin and Mensing suspended along with Cuthbert.

Still think that team is good enough to win, with a bit of height in Lilley upfront and Morais and McLaren having a go down the wings then I think we could take them for a few.

john1962
05-04-2007, 05:06 PM
Dyer has appendicitis so not fit. I think we need to keep going until its mathematically out of our reach so dont chance anyone. A win on Saturday could still cause nerves in Gretna. Their recent form isn't good, it was only Partick they beat. Our problem is ourselves.

Dyer injured as John touted earlier....

As for Lilley starting! I wouldn't...i'd rather see anyone of Jackson, Doris etc partner Peaso than him! He is gash and done very little since he came here. Even in the reserve game where he scored 2 i wasn't impressed and should have had a few more goals if he could finish.

I am pretty sure we will win this game. I think we will adopt our "cup-tie" attitude. We are better than them man for man and if we win the right to play then we will come home with three points.

to those of you that are going be aware that there are roadworks on the A74 between junctions 10 and 11. A contra-flow is in place. Southbound does not seem too bad but northbound on thursday evening it took us over an hour to travel 2 miles, and this was at 10 at night!! The heavy traffic then could have been bank holiday people wanting to get to Scotland (and why wouldn't they!) so it may be easier today.

Brilliant - Bobby Robson :) If they need to bring anyone in to give them a team talk for a game that could win them the leage it just shows them up for the diddy team they are. Gretna in 10 years time will be a distant memory and a lesson to all those teams who live beyond their means

Totally agree, stupid sending off, should be nowhere near the squad for next week.

Great result today if just to shut Radio Scotland up, if I had to hear what a big day it was one more time the computer was going out the window.

Can Bobby Robson do their team talk every week?

His sending off in the league, will be served in the league, vs Clyde.

Regardless of how stupid his red card was, he's a better player than McLaren and will cause more damage to Celtic than McLaren would. That said, I think Mensing will come back in for the semi-final with Hardie moving out wide leaving us without Morais and McLaren unless he drops Lawrie and moves Mensing to right-back.

Saints were almost perfect today. A relatively easy win. Everyone did their job very well.

Morais sending off was stupid but both times appeared big hoofs when the ball came to him rather than a deliberate time wasting tactic. Ball came to him, he didn't think and booted it. Another day, another ref he may not have gone. Technically right I guess but Clark was determined to hit us in some way. He was blaming us for time wasting when the ball hadn't even come back to the players. He has a degree in incompetence. I think we bust his coupon today.

Excellent win (Temple reports up now), despite the crappy stadium. Loved the OF-shirt wearing "home" fans that tried to wind us up and good to see the loyal Gretna fans backing their team (well up until there was just 15 minutes to go).

Not a bad player in the team. Morais was stupid and he's picked up some daft bookings but at least it didn't cost us. Defence and midfield were excellent once they realised how pish the Village People really are. Ando, Hardie, James, Sheerin and McInnes all deserve credit while Jason up front was back to his best.

Kinda glad I went now :)

Radford , do you still think Clark is the best ref in Scotland. Don`t hold out much hope for us next week with him in chargw. I think Saints must have done something to upset him in an earlier life as I can`t think of a game where he has been in charge when we haven`t been hard done-by by him.Only hope he dislikes Celtic more than us but hopefully he will be unbiased with the eyes of the world on him.

It's Charlie Richmond next week but I agree Clark was very poor today and we have more right to be frustrated with his performance than Gretna. The game wasn't dirty so there was no need for his school master type approach.

John Underhill now tops my ranking list of refs.

I usually think Canning is quite composed but my brother said pre-match that he always struggles against strikers like ours and how true it proved. He got turned so easily by Jason and Peaso all day long.

Some folk reckon Mileson is pulling his money out but it's never been like that in my eyes. They - or Wadsworth - simply realised the team they had wasn't good enough for the SPL and they are bedding their younger legs but they will supplement them next season as lets face it, it won't take much to finish above St Mirren next season! :***:

Do you think Sir Bobby Robson is a secret Saints fan? He was interviewed pre-match and BBC were talking to him like he's a big Gretna fan. He knew nothing about them apart from people get married there :***:

Good work, agent Bobby

Pretty impressed with yesterday's performance and exactly one we needed ahead of next week.

Think Morais was stupid for his second booking - he had kicked the ball away twice in the second half and was apparently warned according to the linesman but on other days like someone said he would have got away with it. However, for the benefit of the team he has to play on Sat against Celtic and there's no reason why he shouldn't barring injury.

We played some lovely football and for good spells we had some lovely short passes and looking to create rather than hoofs up the park. not many talking points from the game but chuffed to put their championship party on hold for another week.

What are the chances now of Gretna completely throwing away the league? On a day when they could've wrapped up the title in front of their own fans they didn't seem to play like promotion favourites, and they even had Sir Bobby Robson try to inspire them before the game. Sure, everyone has an off day but as inconsistent as Saints are, we wouldn't have performed like that if we were in their position.

We will soon see how they get on against Hamilton but I can see them slip up again. It would only boil down to Saints messing up for them to win the league rather than win it by themselves. I can't recall reading about them dominating a single game since the turn of the year in the way they did in the first half of the season

That team yesterday could easily go to the end of the season without collecting another point. Okay they would have to be as bad again and I am not sure any team in the division is as bad as they were yesterday.

It's hard to say if they were worse yesterday or on Wednesday at Airdrie. You don't expect the best team in the league to slip up twice.

Can anyone really see us collecting nine points though?

That's the thing, they seem to be playing like a team struggling to avoid relegation as opposed to a team trying to win it. Every league leader goes through a sticky phase but they're usually back on form and focussed on winning the title. In fact, previous league winners would've wrapped it up by now.

Its all going pear shaped for them and they seem very disjointed. Has it all got to do with off-field problems?

I just think they're not very good but it's taken until now for other teams to start losing the fear factor. I wouldn't take any of their players in exchange for ours based on yesterday though.

Since we beat them, they've picked up 12 points out of 30 available which is woeful for the league leaders. Our problem is we've only collected 19 from 33 in the same period.

Dunc says he thinks we can win our three last games but we've not managed 3 wins in a row since August/September although the defence has firmed up and with Jason on fire we are probably as strong as we've been at any point this season, despite last week's unbelievable loss to Livingston.

I can now I think our players would have seen the lack of ability and smelled the fear yesterday and as I said before Saturday I think our cup tie mentality will be there for every game.

I think the arrogance and disrespect from the village people will be a big motivator to at least ensure that we make them win it and not get it from another missed opportunity.

John, you'll like this from the Gretna site...

"On a final note, what are Saints being taught, apart from 'Kicking The Baw Oot O The Stadium'? I'll tell u what they're being taught. How to pull shirts and push opposing players. Dirty play yesterday from Saints. More than 1 player should've been sent off. There were people from Manchester sitting behind me, and they commented several times on Saints' dirty tricks. Did they have a whip-round for the ref? First class ref my arse........."

How can they think the ref favoured us!

It doesn't suprise me at all, Radford. They are actually worse losers then the Midden. I was walking back to the car saying that I had been confident that we would win quite easily when a woman in front gave me the most condescending look. Of course I just had to continue to bait her.

Interesting the absence of Gretna fans on Pie and Bovril. I think they are worried. I think if they know anything about the game they will realise that the crap Irons spouted about nerves was just an excuse.

I'm full of stats tonight but 4 goals for Gretna in their last 7 games is another that should have them worried.

No one ever doubted Davie Irons was a good coach but he's been thrown in at the deep end of management and the simple fact is he isn't getting results. Al Pacino's speech in Any Given Sunday last week and Bobby Robson this week aren't how you win the league, they are how you keep the media sweet and are they lapping it up still or what!

I was confident too yesterday (£10 on Saints HT/FT @ 8/1) because it was a big game so it all comes back to what you said about having to treat the last three games like the cup games and using their arrogance to spur us on.

Call me crazy, but I would almost sacrifice beating celtic for gretna to get beat bu hamilton on saturday If I had the choice. Although I think we are still out of it, saturday is the biggest day of our season, taking into account both games. I think Hamilton can at least get a draw, but im more inclined to think we will slip up against clyde during the week.

Or we could be in the final and have it down to two points on tuesday night.

Owen was told before the game, to take his players straight off the pitch afterwards, so they could party... how much of an incentive is that??

They are not a football club, you can tell by the mentality of their fans... they know nothing... loads of them getting turned away from the away end... surely after all the sucess they have enjoyed they'd have been at least once!!

Oh thank you Saints for making my stay just outside Annan so very very enjoyable:D

Must say I am totally pissed off with the amount of negative comments from those who were not even at the game:evil:

Back to the happy bits though - local TV were so pissed off that they had to cancel all their pre-planned party programs after Gretna had been out hustled by the Very Physical St Johnstone team:***:

Was never sure about them being Rangers fans without tickets until the steady stream leaving the game with 25 mins to go started.
