View Full Version : Saints vs. Queen of the South 21/04/07

I'm so excited I can't sleep so thought I'd start off this thread in eager anticipation of Saturday's game against Queens. Gr£tna still have it all to throw away but Saints must keep the fight going for these last two games to force the villiage people all the way.

We are sure to have picked up some injuries last night with both James and Anderson getting sore ones. Willie McLaren should hopefully make it after straining himself swinging his hand bag at Peaso.

I hope the Dobster has an off day as he was on fire against us last time. I have noticed his scoring rate has slowed down over recent weeks so hopefully he won't come back top haunt us this weekend.

Keep it going Saints!

quite simply have to win at all costs. dont care if we play good or bad. just a win will do

Yes. "Any win will do" as Joseph once sang whilst wearing his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

If we beat Queens on Saturday, we've given ourselves the "luxury" of it going to the last week if Clyde manage a draw against Gretna - a Bully Wee victory would only be a bonus, the draw is all we need. Our problem is that Clyde need to take something regardless of whether we win or not - if Gretna win it's all over.

Injury permitting, I'd expect the same side playing with the same attitude as last night, with exception of Simon in for McLaren, and Fil on the bench. We need the same backing from ourselves for the team as last night too.

My feeling is that if it does go to the last game, the pychological advantage is all with us.

Looking at it logically gretna have the extra point (goal difference) we need them to loose by 2/3 goals to clyde and us to win by the same margin that would bring it down to a 3 goal lead for them, then on the final day if we score a barrell load we would win the league! lets just hope for 2 gretna defeats :)

This is the one game this season Saints really need to do what we've said they've been capable of all season and actually destroy a team like Queens by 5 or 6 goals, and if Gr£tna didn't win that would really have them sh1tting themselves.

I just hope the players get plenty of rest in the build up judging by the performance last night which is understandable. We have to win on Sat, i don't care about nice football i just want a win!!

I think we need to be careful about getting ahead of ourselves by saying lets score 5 or 6 goals. The main thing is that we win the game. If Gretna happen to win theirs there is not much we can do. There will not be an eleven goal swing over the next two games.

Queens are on a good run of form and still have to confirm their place in the division. We can't be complacent, same attitude as last night is needed.

They said much the same about a certain Italian side that visited Old Trafford a couple weeks back.

According to their "fishel" site wee Jobby McColl has them on an unbeaten 12 game run. Unlucky 13 for them I hope! They need 2 points for guaranteed safety and will prove a stiff test for Saints. I can see them sit in and try to frustrate us in the early part of the game knowing we have to win.

Queens are hoping Steve Tosh will recover from injury in time for Saturday's game. I would prefer him to miss out as he has a good record playing against us and poses a midfield goal threat.

He's really not played much at all since he joined them but John O'Neill featured for the reserves on Wednesday so that could well signal a return for Tosh. In truth, they are both players who have caused us problems so if Tosh does make it, we shouldn't be too down about it after all the damage John O'Neill has done us in the past.

Saints MUST win if gretna don't so it's the most important game of the season. It's like a Semi Final and a chance for the last game to be a Final. So instead of just playing SPL teams in the cup we could be doing it every week.

Rabster64

I think the two fixtures are in our favour in terms of getting results. With QoS being in the relegation zone, they will have to sport an attacking side to make sure of a win. I think we play better against a side who try to attack us as it opens up weaknesses at the back both during play but especially in the counter attack with long balls up to scotland/peaso. My biggest fear is that, as one post already mentioned, Queens set up with a defensive side, trying to scrape a draw against us. However bearing in mind their performances this season against us, I think they will have it in their minds that they could pull out a win. If this is the case then I see us beating them substantially. (call me an optimist) Clyde are a good side who will have looked at Gretna's form and will have to feel confident going into their game. The management will surely be stressing the importance of the game to the gretna players and what a result it would be to demolish them while also ensuring they are tactically spot on, so as to reap the benefits from a highly nervous side.

Hamilton away I think will be our toughest game, but if we are one point away from gretna, you have to fancy our chances given the boost to morale we will have. Also due to Hamilton being out of the title race, their team will have less to play for, assuming they even sport a full strength side!

Assuming we beat Queens, now ross country have everything to play for (assuming they also win their game against livi). Gretna I think will struggle against a fired up County side, and will probably hold them to a draw.

Thus we win the league!

Okay,

I realise that there a number of variables here which could go either way. But I think it is about time that we finished something off this season and with the fans support and Coyle's motivation, we can do this.

whats the latest on who can/cannot play?

as far as i know james is very doubtful and mcmanus is still suspended

therefore i would go with...

cuthbert

lawrie - ando - stanic

mcinnes/mensing

morais - mcinnes/mensing - hardie - sheerin

peaso/scotland

any thoughts?

Well folks, as many as possible, get to the game!

As Ronaldo has said, it could be seen as a semi-final... it's cheap and your club needs you!

I think we have to stick with what we know which is 4-4-2 and Goran would be wasted at centre-back, plus I'm not convinced he's good enough defensively to play there.

I'd keep things simple and go:

Cuthbert

Mensing - Lawrie - Anderson - Stanic

Morais - Hardie - McInnes - Sheerin

Peaso - Scotland

Subbies: Halliwell, McLaren, Lilley, Jackson, Monaghan.

Obviously there are different combinations we could use with Mensing, Lawrie and Ando.

Reckon its gonnae be a tense, turgid affair, that we will just scrape through, but thats good enough for me, providing chelsea, i mean gretna, fook up.

And at the end of Deal or no Deal they played Oh when the Saints go marching in!! - Super cool! - has a certain soulfulsaint still in charge at channel 4? - an omen surely????

Definitely a good vibe from Joe Miller anyway, quoted in the Retard ahead of Clyde's trip to Gretna saying,

A 5-0 or 6-0 win here, as well as a good result from Clyde and it's in our hands from out of nowhere.

We usually give QOS a couple of hidings a season so we're due them one today.

Hopefully Clyde can do the job, it seems as if most people have come round to the fact the SPL would be a farce with Gretna there.

Morais has got to start! Only worry is defence with obviously Rutkiewicz out, McManus suspended and James very very very doubtful - i can't decide if it's true this time or if Coyle is playing on it with his weekly "influential players are doubtful"...

Nervous as, but looking forward to what should be another good day!

Lets spread out across the East Stand and get the whole stand singing!

Can I ask a favour? Could at least 10 people give 10% more effort when singing and cheering today and then the players might think I'm there :D !!

We got the result, despite not playing well in the first half, but as has been said many times in the past, the sign of a good team is one which can grind out results, and we did just that.
We were pressurised early on in the first half, and were lucky not to go behind when an effort from the impressive Dobbie was cleared off the line by a defender.
We got the break though when Lawrie headed the ball into the net just before half-time.
However, the second half was a different story. We dominated for long spells, and got our second quite early on when Mensing headed in the ball from a corner.
Then, the mass brawl..
To me, it seemed that the QOS player made a clumsy tackle on Scotland. The Queens man walked away, but Jase ran after him, and gave him a good kick!
Luckily, the referee's back was turned. If he had seen it, surely a red card would have been shown!
Anyway, this developed into a pitch fight, the only player not joining in was the Dobster, a good-hearted fellow obviously! ;)
At one point, Big Mad Mental Martin Hardie emerged from the brawl, grabbing a QOS player by his neck! :D
The fight soon died down, and we got the 3rd goal when a lovely one-two between Scotland and McLaren resulted in the latter with just the keeper to beat, and a very cool finish from him.
Some good performances today. Although not wanting to single any player out, McLaren was poor in my opinion but hopefully the goal will have boosted his confidence.
Meanwhile, the Dobster showed some nice touches and good awareness in the first half, but died out of the game in the second. Not match for our defence today.
We got the result. Gretna didn't.
Let's hope lots of fans turn up at Hamilton next week to support Saints in our final title push! ;D

Scotland was booked for nothing at all, he was fouled by their big centre back, then the one of the other Queens players ran past him, then for some reason Scotland got up on his feet and ran over to him pointing, the Queens player saw him run towards him and toppled over without being touched.

When the ref turned round the Queens player was on the ground with Scotland next to him, then the handbags came out.

Scotland didn't touch the player at all, why it kicked off is beyond me because there was no reason whatsoever for it.

Scotland definately did not kick the guy as has been said because he was a few yards away when their player fell down.

SJC
21-04-2007, 05:48 PM
I can't believe what some are writing here, QOS were decent for the first 15 minutes then we dominated them. Cuthbert didn't have a save to make and Dobbie missed an open goal by managing to hit it straight at Mensing.

Delighted to have the result and 3 goals - especially considering Gretna had it cleared off the line twice and a goal chalked off for being handball!

The players showed great attitude today - and i think if Queens had come to atatck (like we expected!) rather than defend and hit us on the counter in the first half then it would have been a much better game! Queens have some pace, especially when that wee shite Murray came on and i feared for Lawrie at that point.

The guy tackled him from behind from which he got up, you could see from behind the dugouts it was pure intent from JS, he ran towards the guy and stepped/jumped on the back of his heels / ankles.

Agreed. Definite red card if the referee had seen it. Jason ran to him with intent, and that behaviour could have cost us the points, and therefore the league.

Absolutely fantastic effort today from players and fans alike. If only all Saints games were as enjoyable as today's, our attendances would be going through the roof.

Stand outs for me today were Mensing (a Baresi-esque display from him at centre-back), Peaso (that little piece of skill in the corner in front the East Stand was sheer genius), the Sheerin (good to have the Wizard back on form) and Hardie (the man's an absolute beast - what a force he's going to be for us next season, no matter what division we're in).

Thought McLaren showed some nice touches at times and took his goal well, though his body language looks really negative a lot of the time and I do think Morais offers more. I wonder if there's any chance of us trying to keep Morais here? I think he could be terrific for us if he came here permanently and got a pre-season with us under his belt.

Looks like an expensive trip up to Hamilton from Grimsby for me next week, then!

Great performances all round by the boys to take it to the wire. Gretna look to be bottling it completely and the Saints players have done what OC wanted - been there to take advantage - it seems to be happening for us big time now, which is very, very satisfying after the earlier season disappointments. We seem to have built up an unstoppable momentum now and the psychological advantage is all with Saints next week. Just a pity we couldn't have taken a couple of the other excellent chances we created today. Simon Mensing was immense at the back, ably supported by Ando and Andy Lawrie, who I thought had a stormer. Typical gutsy show from MMM, Wizard looks to be back to his creative best, and Oor Wullie, after a slow start, came on to a great game second half and wasn't his goal a beaut? MoM? Difficult to call between Simon and Andy Lawrie for me. Lawrie for the (rare) goal and some killer touches into Jason and Peaso's feet.

Next week. Bring it on. That is all.

Job half-done. Bring on the Accies :)

Temple reports up now anyway but I thought all the problems were of our own making. We were very nervy early on and Scotland and Peaso were both off the pace. Didn't see Jason's kick but the referee was letting alot of challenges on Scotland and Peaso go - Thomson and Lauchlan both could have walked.

McLaren's goal was a class finish and the build-up matched it. Thought Peaso was a bit stroppy and it was interesting that all Wullies other teammates made a point of congratulating him (Sheerin applauded him off the park when he was subbed as well).

Good showing by anderson and lawrie today, there were some sloppy passes but anderson got to header after header first time when up against a taller bigger player.

Hardie was his usual getting stuck in which is just what we needed today. thought the front two worked hard today and jasons one two will willie was superbly waitied.

Great result. Mensing Ando & Lawrie were immense & MMM was everywhere on the park even though he has had better games.

Scotland very lucky not to be sent off as he went right into the back of the guys heel, although the ref should have given him a foul just before that.

Wullie was very poor first half but came onto a good game in the second & took his goal beutifully.

McInness was also poor but gave 100% & you can`t ask more than that.

Don`t know what was wrong with the Cat but Halliwell spent most of the first half warming up in the tunnel & Mensing & Ando were taking the goal kicks which was putting pressure on us as their forwards were able to stay on the 18 yard line for the ball to come back in.

Hardie was playing deeper today because he injured himself in the warm-up. He came to the side about 10 minutes before the Business Club presentation asking for strapping in a Kevin James style.

Jason didn't touch that guy, had an unobstructed view of it and the guy fell over because he was expecting Scotland to do something.

Thought we were the better side overall today, although Queens did at times look a decent outfit without ever really bothering our goal at all.

Performance wise you can take nothing away from Ando, who carried on in a similar vein to where he left off on tuesday, Lawrie was good aswell - as well as he has played for Saints i thought.

MMM put in another good shift, as did Peaso and Peanut had a decent enough game too.

But what about Mensing? - A real complete performance from him at CB, a great headed goal too. Hope the talk of him becoming a fake saint is pish because we need this guy.

Overall a fairly easy victory that could have saw more goals had we shown a little more compsure at times.

Whether Scotland touched the guy or not, he shouldn't be reacting in that manner. He got up and ran straight for the player - Queens fans said he kicked out, and the opinion seems to be divided on here.

Either way, he was 100% in the wrong to behave like that and on another day could easily have seen red for it. If the referee had seen it, I think he would've sent him packing. As it happens, Scotland did wait until he'd turned his back before moving toward the player. It's just sheer idiocy.

Fastly losing respect for Jason - he seems more and more disinterested as the game go by. He's either trying less, or being significantly shown up by other players stepping up their game in this push for the title.

My view of it was Jason never caught the player - he got up to run and complain at offending player/referee and player waited till he was behind him and fell to the ground.

Rammy was funny though - bet McInnes would still be trying to plead non guilty with the ref on the pitch now if he was able to - he went in and made things worse before shouting to the ref and linesman that it wasn't even him!

Otherwise, I'd say a great game of football, or maybe I'm biased... QOS had a good go, we held on, scored and then played some tremendous football...

Great support in numbers and vocal support with very little abuse dished out and and the QOS support are a credit to their team too...
