I noticed Broggy Man asking about Stanic's contract length and no doubt as the weeks progress more questions of that ilk will get asked. I posted this on the old forum as it's a useful reference point if people want to know when players' contracts expire.

No, if he was to go on loan again he would have to go elsewhere - same rule as Allan Macgregor's last year.

Cheers
I thought he might be ok as he is not in the same division as us, I thought the Rob Roy deal was because he was a SPL registered player.

I hope he stays at us from January onwards. I think he add something to this team.
Also do you think this will be wee dazzas last season, i would like him to stay for another year if we don't get promoted. IMO he could handle another year of the firsr, don't think he would have the legs for the SPL however.

I'd see how injuries go.
I personally would rather have him playing week in week out at Cowdenbeth than the occasional game for us or on the bench.
He's got plenty of time, he's enjoying it at cowdenbeth, it's toughning him up, leave him there to the end of the season if possible IMO. He'll be a better player for it.

This is quite relevant really but there is a difference between January 2006 and June 2006 in contract terms as I am well aware with any potential future.
Are there not several that expire on January such as Hannah, Cuthbert etc?

Nope, AFAIK Radford has it pretty much spot on in that most contracts are up in June. Paterson and McAnespie spring to mind as the only ones who expire on Dec 31, 2005.

As we could be in the SPL next season, I reckon there would be quite a few changes to the squad
There would have to be IMO:
Another goalkeeper
Another commanding centre-half
Cover for both full-back areas
Wingers
Attacking midfielders
Cover for Sheridan
Another good SPL striker
So, pretty much a new team!

I think it is good to have all the strikers on contract for next year and a couple beyond. There are not many else in the team contracted for next season, and that should hopefully spur alot of them on to not only gain promotion but earn themselves another contract.

Just thought I'd bring this thread back to the top to see what people's thoughts are on the squad now that we know we're probably going to be in the First again next season.
Here's what I would do...
Goalkeepers
Kevin Cuthbert - 2006 - offer a new deal in the summer, but only as back-up.
Matt Glennon - 2006 - offer a new deal now - I've been very impressed by him, and that's even before his assault on the goalscoring charts!
Defenders
Jim Weir - same deal as usual.
Kevin James - 2007 - keep (he's under contract anyway)
Kevin Fotheringham - 2006 - Undecided. I rate him pretty highly but it's difficult to work out whether or not he's in Coyle's plans. I'd start playing him before the end of the season, to give him a chance to get a new deal.
Kevin Rutkiewicz - 2006 - offer him a new deal now. He's been sensational for us this season.
Steven Anderson - 2006 - sadly, I'd be releasing him. I think he's lost his way a bit, and I'd be looking to sign a new centre-half with a bit more experience.
Simon Mensing - 2007 - keep (under contract anyway).
Goran Stanic - 2006 - offer him a new deal now. I didn't think much of him at the start of the season, but he's been getting better and better every week.
Midfielders
Ryan Stevenson - 2006 - offer him a new deal in the summer. He's versatile, he can score goals, and he's made a lot of progress this season.
Paul Sheerin - 2006 - offer him a new deal now.
Ryan McCann - 2006 - release him. Works hard and has a great attitude, but just not quite good enough.
Neil Janczyk - 2007 - I'd probably be looking to move him on. I'd actually completely forgotten about him. He has a bit of ability, but he's done very little with it since arriving.
Darren Sheridan - 2006 - offer him a new deal now. He's fantastic. I'd hate for us to face next season without him. Getting him and Glennon signed up should be the two main priorities.
John Henry - 2006 - release him.
Jamie Winter - 2006 - going back to Aberdeen anyway.
Martin Hardie - 2008 - keep, obviously.
Forwards
Owen Coyle - 2007 - keep, obviously.
Peter MacDonald - 2008 - he'll be here next season obviously.
Stephen Dobbie - 2007 - keep. I reckon he'll have a good season for us next time.
Steven Milne - 2008 - keep.
Jason Scotland - 2007 - keep, unless we get a good chance to cash in on him.
Andy Jackson (Forfar Athletic) - 2006 - offer him another deal, but probably send him out on loan again. I struggle to see him breaking past the other strikers for a while yet.
I'm not sure what the situation is with Doris and Dyer, but I'd also probably give them new deals.
That would leave us looking to bring in a centre-half and a right wing-back or winger (depending on how Coyle wants to play) over the summer. Another left-sided midfielder might also be nice, but other than that it doesn't look like we actually need all that many changes.

I mainly agree with you about Janczyk and Dobbie though, Scrabble just hasn't done it and Dobbie has shown enough to suggest he's got something to offer.
What's happening with Janczyk just now - is he injured? He certainly hasn't been in the squad for the last few weeks.
For what its worth I feel he's been really unlucky in his time at Saints, and hasn't really had much of a chance. I don't really know how you can say he "just hasn't done it" - for me he hasn't featured enough to make that decision. Anytime I've seen him I've been pretty impressed. He could maybe do with a bit more dig, but he's looked very good technically and his passing ability was impressive. A lot of people were saying a few weeks ago that Dobbie was useless and should be punted, but he's been given another chance in the team and he's been pretty impressive.
I feel Janczyk was probably signed as a replacement for Paul Sheerin, but given Sheerin's form this season this season he just hasn't been able to force his way into the team. If Sheerin were to be injured however, we don't have any left footed cover in the centre of midfield apart from Janczyk, so I still think he could be a very useful squad player.
As for where we need to strenghten, its crucial that Coyle decides which system he wants to play with; 3-5-2 or 4-4-2. My hunch is that he'd probably prefer to play with a back 4, but that the players we have at the moment are better suited to a 3. I suppose what system we play next season might depend on who he is able to sign.
Its obviously crucial that we sign a couple of wingers for a 4-4-2, and in addition to that a right-back who's comfortable going forward and an experienced centre-half as cover would be nice. If a couple of wingers prove unattainable (possible as there's not that many around), a right-wing back is clearly a must, as is cover at centre-half and for me some cover for Stanic, as I'm not sure how his legs would hold up to another season playing as a wing-back.

That's why I reckon we should look around for a left-sided midfielder during the summer (although there is still Fotheringham who could do a job there if he stays). I don't doubt that Janczyck is a skilful player with a good range of passing, but he just doesn't seem to have the bite or enthusiasm to make it. I think you're right that he was originally signed to replace Sheerin, but since then Sheerin has proven that he's a far better player.

Does it really have to be one of those two formations? I'd disagree with that, but if you're right, then I hope we don't go back to 4-4-2. Normally I think it works, but you'd need to perform a pretty significant overhaul of our squad to get it to work well for us. Even though I'm no massive fan of 3-5-2, we have more positions comfortable with that formation than we do with 4-4-2. A switch to 4-4-2 means a disruption at the back with less cover for the defenders, and I think it would also create a problem in the middle. Who would be our middle two? Sheridan and Sheerin together without anyone else wouldn't work. Sheridan and Hardie might work, but dropping Sheerin seems like a waste. I'd rather use a system where we have all three of them in there, as we have been recently.

I'd tend to agree with you that a 3-5-2 does suit the players we have better, but the fact that Coyle's been making big noises about being desperate to sign an out-and-out winger in the summer suggests he wants to play with a 4-4-2. Signing a winger wouldn't make any sense if he had already decided to stick with wing-backs long term.
I'd suggest that a four man midfield consisting of:
Right Winger---Hardie---Sheridan---Sheerin
could work. The right winger would need to be top quality, able to hold his position out wide, beat a man and put in decent crosses. I think this would allow Sheerin to stay narrow and maintain the type of role he's had playing as part of a three man central midfield.
While you could argue that Sheerin was at his most ineffective this season when he was playing on the left wing when we were playing 4-4-2, I think this was more down to Stevenson clearly not being comfortable on the right, and Sheerin feeling he had to provide some width and not play his natural game, which is primarily making late runs from a central area. If Stanic gets another year (which he should do), then we've already seen how effective he can be going forward, so he could provide some width down the left. I'm not saying this is definetely what we'll do, but it would make sense and, I feel , would work pretty well.

Definatley, however if nothing materialises it may give janny the chance to show the potential we all heard about when he first came. With only a year on his contact, its a really big season for him if he wants to persue a career at this level.
Need some more midfielders thats for sure and wingers. Hopefully something comes of this Spanish guy. Unless OC wants to go with wingbacks or something.

Cuthbert at the very least is good backup for several reasons, one of which is he won't kick up too much of a fuss about being benched.
I am not too sure about this. Cuthbert went up in my estimation today when I saw him up at the stadium out practising his kicking, on what looked like a day off for the aquad. Must have punted 20 balls up and down the park for about an hour.
Maybe he realises what he has to do to keep his place. I suspect, however, taht we will be getting a new goalie in during January.

Maybe not as much movement as we expected or hoped for in the window but the squad still looks as strong as it has done for a good few years. Hopefully OC will be able to retain most of the players he wants to, although losing Jason is the obvious worry and would probably leave us looking for a new striker for next season, with not many in the Scottish lower leagues jumping out as potential targets.

Nothing to be gained from running a story. OC doesn't like pre-contracts and there's little point in winding up Gretna. I'm sure neither OC or Main will comment until the end of the season so you'd end up with a couple of lines.

Nothing to be gained from running a story. OC doesn't like pre-contracts and there's little point in winding up Gretna. I'm sure neither OC or Main will comment until the end of the season so you'd end up with a couple of lines.
Is keeping the fans of the club informed not reason enough Radders?
OC may not like pre contracts but hes signed a player on one! They are part of football so he has to accept them and get on with it.
I dont see how announcing something that everyones knows unofficially would wind Gr£tna up and even if it did, so what? Why put them before Saints supporters?
Most other media have announced it and here you have a current player stating hes signed. It will just make the club look stupid when they do announce it and if nothing else, we have missed yet another PR opportunity.

Is it not the case that saints can't announce it unless Gretna agree.
Article in the daily Record yesterday saying that Main has been banned for 2 weeks.

What if the boot was on the other foot and somebody had signed Scotland and Cuthbert on a pre contract and the other team happened to be Gretna? What would everybodies feelings be then? If everybody knows they are going the player can be accused of throwing games or not giving 100%, which has happened in Mains case, not sure how it helps any of the parties involved, unless Gretnas new keeper starts playing how everybody expects him to play. Personally i think pre contracts are a bad thing for the very reasons i have said, maybe you shouldnt be able to talk or sign for anybody until your current contact expires, however i can see a heavy dose of European legislation preventing freedom of labour or something.

Wouldnt make any difference as far as I am concerned. Pre contracts are here where we like it or not. They are just bringing forward an action that is more than likely going to happen a few weeks/months later anyway.
I do agree with your thoughts that they are a bad thing though because of the potential disruption they can cause, real or not.
I think though my point has been missed. Im Mains case, it has twice been announced on national media and more importantly Saints players are openly talking about him having signed. Whats the point of still saying nothing under these circumstances?

TBH I would only be looking to retain Mensing on the playing side as cover (but he still could be off to Midden) Stanic for one more year and Anderson, but I susspect he will not resign as I have heard he wants regular first team football. James will not play again he is fecked.
Would love to keep Phil M but that is probably a non starter he is perhaps the only real footballer we have.

Should of worded that a bit better  nothing to do with the current injury but. Heard a rumour that basically all the injuries have caught up with him, especially his knees and that he was looking to hang up his boots shortly, or at least cutting back on games played. Like I say just a rumour, but he has said himself last week in the paper that the toll on his body with injuries has been adding up

From the players going out of contract at the end of the season i think these guys are a must, i know we are not really in with a shout for jason but from what i have seen recently he is liking his football here
Kevin James
Goran Stanic
Steven Anderson

I would like to see a couple of new players brought in as i said in january i would like to see richard offiong from hamilton come to us, i think he is a player who would do very well here. i would like to see andy lawrie moved on and a new right back come in who? i don't know. I think mesing should replace mcinness in midfield with hardie and sheerin. I think playing willie mac infront of the midfield and behind the attack letting him pick up the ball in the middle and then pick a side.

Can't argue with much of this. As has been said, I doubt we can get Morais as he has been told he is wanted by Milwall, so I think we add a right winger to our wanted list again !
I would also question offering Jackson a 2 year contract. Has he really taken his chances this year. I am not convinced, but I am not saying we should get rid of him either. It is one I would have to think about offering, before doing it though.
I would also keep James, at least for another year.
Steve Maskrey
15-03-2007, 02:28 PM
I would give James, Sheerin and Stanic 1 year deals although the last two, I would probably offer them a 1 yr extension after that. James's influence on the park is too much to just release him. I think McInnes has already got an extension to his current deal, on offer.
I would keep Dyer, we need cover for left back and Stanic's consistency has prevented him from getting any more games. The other young lads should also be given new deals with one or two being loaned out for the first half of the season.
The rest of Ronaldo's suggestions, i'd go with. Having a fully fit Rutkiewicz will be like having a new signing and a possible partnership with Anderson at some point next season
Ronaldo
15-03-2007, 03:39 PM
Well I found it difficult to put release against James and in fat I've changed my mind. I think he offers something else and a fit Kevin James would be brilliant. He ertainly made a differene when he returned from injury. His commitment is second to none but I was just a bit cautious over whether another year would be effective and whether it would be better to bring in someone else.

There is a clause in his contract that if he played a certain amount of games then he's entitled to an extension. The Courier suggests that he's about to sign a 1 year deal with us and judging by his comments after the game, he's not planning on moving on
With the spirit in the squad being as it is, I'd be very surprised if all the players being offered a new contract didn't sign it. Obvious exception being Jason, of course.
My view on the matter seems to change every time this topic comes up!

Would Sheerin maybe depend on who the SPL team is? Is he not quite settled in Perth with his kid (kids?) attending local schools and things?
Mind you, i suppose players will travel in an Andy Lawrie stylee!
I think that Sheerin is settled in Perth and with his kids in the equation and the fact that he is coming to the end of his career you would hope that a sound grounding for his family as well as a bit of loyalty towards Saints would see his staying at the club. Is loyalty though something that happens in the modern game?

I think you could just as easily say that, as he's coming to the end of his career, this summer is probably his last chance to (a) make as much money as he can for himself and his family, and (b) give the SPL another crack.
Loyalty doesn't come into it. Paul Sheerin doesn't owe Saints any loyalty. We've given him contracts, and he's served us well throughout them - both parties benefitted out of it, as it should be. If Sheerin had been playing poorly or picked up a lot of injuries, we'd be releasing him right now - we wouldn't be complaining about Saints not showing him any loyalty.

So if we exclude the full time youth players, the average age of the 19 players in the First Team squad is 28 which aint bad considering. When I first looked at the ages of some I thought the average age would have been higher.
That said, much of the defence and midfield are approaching veteran status!

Have non of these young guys not signed yet ?.
I am sure Coyle will sign another couple of players yet but if he doesn`t manage to I would be happy with a couple of these guys in the pool.
If they have not resigned & we don`t manage to pick up a couple of good midfielders then we could struggle this season.

Personally, I still think we are three players short. We could do with another (better) option at right back, another striker but most importantly another central midfielder to really push McInnes or Hardie for the jersey. That is definitely easier said than done though. Not convinced that another two midfielders would be excessive.

Yep but primarily just to help the younger guys in the reserves.
Regarding squad age, I agree that 26-29 is the level you should be looking for and would hope the midfielders we bring in fall in that bracket, when players are usually at their peak. At the moment we have guys at either end of the scale, although Hardie may well be playing the best football of his career.

Have to agree with that DBay but I can`t see it happening. Cuthbert would be daft to sign up for another couple of years of sitting on the bench whilst a geriatric sells points week in week out.Whetherston , McLuskey & Dyer don`t look like they are in the plans & Anderson is played at right back & on subs bench when he should be first choice centre back.

Just bumping this since we've added a few new faces. Lots of decision for the manager to make in the summer. The opportunity is certainly there for him to overhaul the squad if that's what he wants to do. He did say when he took over that he felt we had a good squad and suggested the improvements he thought good be made could be done tactically but it became clear in January he'd maybe re-assessed that opinion.

(Ages at start of season 2008/09)
Maybe not the best time to ask after a disappointing result yesterday but what are folks' thoughts on players staying or going? Definite exits for me are Cuthbert, Lawrie and McCluskey of the senior players. Definite keeps are Rutkiewicz, Hardie and MacDonald and I'd like Morris to stay, although no idea how likely that is. Not sure what the chances of keeping Craig and Quinn are we lacked a real physical presence against Accies yesterday and neither are going to provide that, although admittedly Morris and Hardie would. Add Mooner to the keep list and hopefully he'll push on a bit more next season. I think he's probably exceeded his own expectations this season.
That leaves McManus, Stanic, Sheerin and McBreen, ignoring Cameron who will surely return to Tannadice. We need a target man option IMO but if McBreen is gonna spend more time on the treatment table than the pitch then we need to look elsewhere. I do think he'd be a good player for us if fit though. The other three have all played a lot this season and the advantage of McManus is he will always be fit so provides good cover. Can we afford to run with 4 centre backs though? I think it'll be hard to find 2 left backs so for that reason Stanic should get another year and Sheerin offers the same thing as McManus, he'll always be fit. He can also play a number of roles. Wouldn't be against all of them getting another year, although I'd like to see Peaso, Hardie and Ruti get a couple.
Of the younger guys, not sure on O'Brien's long term potential but the others are all progressing ok IMO.
In short...
Cuthbert - Go
Rutkiewicz - 2 years
Stanic - 1 year
McManus - 1 year
Lawrie - Go
Moon - 1 year (With view to same arrangement as with Jacko/Ando last summer)
Sheerin - 1 year
Hardie - 2 years
McCluskey - Go
Morris - 1 year
MacDonald - 2 years
McBreen - 1 year

Players to go....
Cuthbert, McManus,Lawrie,Stanic,Sheerin( my fav player but he's done)McDonald. If we get a half decent offer for Savo we should take it as well.
I think we need .Two new defenders,we are okay in midfield and we need two new strikers who have to have a much better chances to goals ratio than Peaso and Savo

I agree with that pretty much entirely. Only slight change I might make is that I'd maybe give McCluskey another chance with a one year deal. I think he's a skilful player who has maybe been a bit unlucky this season with injuries - he seems really lightweight but that's always something that can be worked on.
I wonder if we have a decent chance of keeping Morris? I've only seen him once for us and he was rank (at Partick), but I think that if he gets a pre-season with us he could be a terrific player for us.
I'd definitely want Craig to stay, out of the loan players. I'm not so sure about Quinn though - I think we can probably do better.

Rutkiewicz - 2 years (although he is a bit dodgey at times mainly solid)
Stanic - 1 year (use as make shift till a replacment is found)
McManus - G0/1 year (offer a contract if a better replacement cant be found)
Lawrie - Go
Moon - 2 year
Sheerin - 1 year (but again only as back-up)
Hardie - 2 years
McCluskey - 1 year
Morris - 1 year

McBreen - 1 year (although i know he is VERY injury prone he is still a good player and it is had enough to find a big target man so hoprfully if he gets pre-season under his belty he could do a turn)

Players that are being released will find out on Thursday apparently. Sheerin offered a year and Danny McBreen says he's been offered a year! McManus and McCluskey confirmed departures and you'd be a brave man to bet against Cuthbert, Lawrie and Stanic heading the same way.

No problem then .We have the basis of a good team there. Only have to worry about signing Sheerin & Irvine. I am sure PS will sign for another season & hopefully Gary will.
I hope Del has targeted another goalie & left back(hopefully Hanlon) & maybe a couple of strikers to replace Barrett & Homer although I wouldn`t object to Homer being kept on.
If Doris is only 21 we will need him for one of the 3 under 23`s that have to be in the squad.

As much as I had hoped it would happen I doubt we'll get Hanlon. Mixu seems to have changed his opinion of him and he had a decent game at Tynie last night.

I think with the number of midfielders we now have, 2 left backs would be a luxuary. One is obvioulsy a priority, but in Craig we have a versatile player who has shown he is capable of playing there if needs be.

I reckon from that lot, its a possibility that Anderson will be offski if we recieved an offer.
Even although the offical website is stating that Gartland is looking likely to stay, im not 100% sure on that one either, if he gets another offer from somewhere i can see him going too, ala Homer.
As others have suggested also im sure if we received an offer for Peaso, the club would not stand in his way.

i know this is getting a little ahead of ourselves but looking at howmany are out of contract the next summer we might have to try and get a few more signed in extentions like Rusty once all the current expiring contracts are dealt with.

I know your not Ando's biggest fan Jimmy, but i honestly rate the guy. Have you ever seen the DVD of that famous night in Govan? If not, you should try and get your hands on it, he was fantastic, so much so that the commentator on Rangers TV could not stop raving about his performance, mind you at that time their main defender was Karl Svensson. Another performance that springs to mind is in the Semi-Final at Hampden against Celtic, he marked Aidan McGeady out of the game.
I realise that in the past season some of Ando's performances have not been great, and its a possibility that he gone "stale", i reckon for the sake of his own career he would be better going elsewhere, as he will never get a regular game with us, if everyone is fit. Wouldnt suprise me if he signed for another team, and went on to be a star.

provided Gary signs on, we have 6 defenders on the books.
4 play, 1 on the bench, 1 back up for injury, seems fair to me.
dont think Ando's going anywhere
we'll see what happens when/if a left backs brought in!
