Tricky game this one. Every time I go there it,s a shite game and we should have won but just can,t seem to do it...It,s gonna be different this time. I think team confidence is finaly on the up and we are starting to look a bit more like Championship contenders. I hope we can build on the good fluid passing moments against Hamilton and Morton and perhaps play in that style for more of the game as opposed to route one big howfs up the park. When we start to pass and move we look so good and will give most teams a doing . The team for the game??? We don,t seem to be getting much from McDairmid on the injury status of Hardie and Weatherston and an update on James and Savos progress would be welcome. Also official site says jackos injury looks not to serious but what does that mean..Fit for Saturday? out for 1-2 games or what??? If all fit I would go with

Main
Irvine McManus Rusty Stanic

Weatherston Hardie/McInnes Rocco Sheerin

Jacko/Peaso Deuchar

Subs. The Cat,Anderson,Moon,McLaren,Daal,Lawrie...........

I hope their "nightclub is open before the game.( anyone know if it is???)

There should be a decent Saints support there and anyone who is undecided about going, get off your arse and get down there. The more the merrier. Lets get right behind them and lets get it right up Meadowbank....

Come on ye Saints

Why drop Ando?

Since Kernaghan, I have never seen a better centre-half wearing a Saints shirt and I can't believe you'd drop him. He has played through a pretty serious foot injury this year and generally is fully committed to the cause.

Why drop Ando?
There are mistakes creeping into his game IMO. Not sure why, whether it be this injury, the fact he doesn't have to work as hard for his place or just a spell of poor form but he was short with a back pass against Thistle, made a mess of a clearance against Brechin and Graham was his man last night. All three errors cost us goals.

I think Ando is a good player but he,s a better right back than centre half and he,s not going to shift Irvine . Last few games he,s played well but has let himself down with a few short back passes and headers which have cost us goals. ie Partick and Brechin and also last night he nearly scored an OG although to be fair that was as much The Cats fault. I Just think Rusty is better and also offers the possibility of goals from set pieces.

Can`t believe you 2. Ando gives us the pace at the back that we were missing . He covers right across the back & to my mind should be first pick.

Why would we change a winning team apart from injuries ?.

I think you are wrong about the 3 mistakes. For starters the passback against Partick was good defending ,it was Main that messed it up. ca`n think of the Brechin one & because the player he was meant to be marking at Morton scores its Ando`s fault.

Brechin game he was poor - no doubts.

As for the rest, I'm afriad I can't agree. He does make slips now and then but not as many as Ruti or McManus. I'll admit McManus is playing very well at present and perhaps this highlights Ando's poor game against Brechin and his errors last night but... we can all remember howlers from Ruti, McManus et al that have cost us points so lets not get picky over ifs and buts. He was probably responsible for the goal last night but he also had a beautiful chest-back to Cuthbert in a tight situation (at 1-1 or 2-1) when they were applying a bit of pressure.

We know he's a player who needs confidence and dropping him won't fix that. Further, Ruti still has not regained full fitness AFAIK - though Ronaldo's post indicates he knows differently - he was not being pushed in sprints at training last week. I also recall two or three big mistakes from him at 0-0 against Thistle. I'm not slating Dinky, I just don't believe he is as good as Ando and I think we should remember that mistakes are part of football.

Crikey, I didn't think Dukes was great last night, but I wouldn't start Daal/Stewart or Peaso ahead of him on Sarurday.

The great thing about having four good centre halves is there has to be competition for places. Coyle has admitted Ruti was dropped for last weekend, rather than injured but Ando has let his high standards slip slightly IMO. I don't know who I'd go for but was just adding why I could understand Jim dropping him. We might convert to a 3-5-2 at Livi and all three will be accomodated in place of McLaren? I think he's probably more likely to go with the same outfield XI that played on Tuesday though.

Disagree completely that the mistake that led to the Partick Thistle goal was Mains fault. Anderson was woefully short with that header back and there wasn't a lot Main could do about it. He also almost scored an own goal against Morton when communication between defender and goalkeeper broke down. Cuthbert didn't get out as quick as he should've, so Anderson decided to kick it back to him as Cuthbert was finally diving to collect it! What was Cuthbert going to do with it after Ando kicked it? He couldn't catch it!

That said, I do rate Anderson highly. I wouldn't be quick to drop him at the moment. These errors are forgiveable whilst the team is free scoring, and the good points of his game far outweigh the bad.

Blue Heaven says:

Jackson brought down in the box, ref awards a penalty to Saints. Sheerin puts the ball on the spot, takes the penalty and scores. Ref then calls him back to retake it, presumably for encroachment, and puts the ball on the spot. Saints and Livi players start to argue with the ref and eventually a Livi player picks the ball up off the spot and takes a free-kick elsewhere and the game continues. Bizarre.

and unfortunatley the ref was right, after accusing peaso i think it was? of running into the box before it was taken he immediatley pointed towards thier keeper showing he had awarded a free kick. The same thing happened to me whilst playing football about a year ago, apparently if a player of the attacking team goes into the box before the penalty is taken it is a free kick to the defending team. Stupid rule i think!!!

Just in case anyone is still confused law 14 states:

Infringements/Sanctions: Go to top of this page

Generally speaking, infringements are punished in the same way - regardless of which team committed them.

If a player from the defending team infringes before the ball has been touched and moves forward, an unsuccessful penalty will be retaken; but a successful penalty will be allowed to stand.

If a player from the attacking team infringes before the ball has been touched and moves forward, an unsuccessful penalty will be not be retaken; but if a goal is scored, the penalty must be retaken.

If players from both teams infringe simultaneously (for example, if a player from each team enters the penalty area before the kick is taken), the penalty is retaken regardless of whether a goal was scored or not.

Infringements can occur both before the ball has been touched (and in play) or after the penalty kick has been taken.

Infringements before the penalty kick take place may be committed by the kicker, the goalkeeper, or by the kicker's team-mates, or the defending team.

Regarding the penalty incident, it seems as if the referee gave a free kick to Livi after a speech foul by Willie McClaren, the penalty was all set up to be retaken until McClaren walked over to the ref and said something to him.

Aside from that bizarre incident, we played well today and were unlucky not to score 3 or 4, not including the penalty.

Jackson was booked as well for a dive in which it appeared he was clearly fouled.

The linesman in front of the away support was truly awful throughout, missing offsides and then giving one against us when Jackson was clearly onside, having been offside during a clearout, but then onside after Rocco Quin passed it to him- how the linesman gave this when he was nowhere near up with the play is a joke.

Another thing to add is that Livi's Stadium must be the worst in Europe for atmosphere, Livi's fans are damn boring as well, anyone who thinks it's great to pointlessly bang a drum through the match doesn't have much going for them, and being from Livi doesn't do much for them either.

Whatever happened to their half decent mascot? Has he buggered off as well along with about 2000 of their support? In the 1700 attendence, we must have had between 600-800 of that, and of their 900 fans only 4 of them managed to make any noise at all.

Great day despite the bizarre trip to factory outlet land.

From where I was the ref was signalling for a free kick straight away, nothing McLaren said had any bearing on the decision. It will be interesting to see if there is an explanation for this bizarre decision.

I agree we must keep Deuchar, at least try and get him back on loan til the end of the season. I reckon he'll be the difference between us winning or losing the league. Another great second half performance in which we didn't look like losing although the defence were solid enough to not let them get a decent shot at goal. Irvine, McManus, Ando, McLaren, McInnes all played well and Main had his best game for us since he came back even though he had little to do

I have just sent this to the SFL..

Livingstone v St.Johnstone 6/10/07

Sir, could you please explain to me the reasoning behind the referees decision to award a free kick to Livingstone after St.Johnstone were awarded a penalty in the above dated game. It seemed that due to encroachment the penalty which had been scored would have to be re-taken as per your own rules as shown below

I had my camera video-ing the penalty (battery ran out before the refs reaction but I got the "goal"). Peaso definitely encroached before the first kick but I can't for the life of me understand the referee awarding the kick to Livi.

Clip is Here (http://media.putfile.com/Sheerins-disallowed-penalty-at-Livingston)

Anyway my report's up on the Temple but after a poor 1st half, thought we thoroughly deserved the win despite the players looking shagged out after Cappielow. Midfield was excellent again with McLaren and Quinn standouts and both goals were cracking finishes from the strikers.

Things are definitely looking up:)

Shaggy Jenkins

the only thing I can see apart from the encroachement is the ref maybe did not blow for the kick to be taken he did not signal with his hand for sheeren to run up, he was still sorting out the players on the right when the kick was taken......Still this should then be a retake, no?

Looks like he has given encroachment against Peaso, who was 0.000001 seconds ahead of the Livi guy going into the box....gave a free kick instead of a retake...gave a bad signal for the free kick that made it look as if he was ordering the pen to be retaken. In other words, a total b@lls up.

it's a weird one isn't it. Even the Livi players were lining up for a retake of the penalty.

We're hot. A long run of good results would be fantastic. For all the negative guys - we're only five points off second bottom. For all the optimistic guys - we're only eight points behind Hamilton and their small squad has to go through the winter. Something for everyone. Many SJFC players to return too. Livi had scored 14 goals in their last four home games with three wins and one draw and we pumped them.

Saints were superb today. Really awesome performance from us (especially after the antics against this lot last season).

I honestly feel we should do everything we can to secure Deuchar and Quinn even if it is just to the end of season. These 2 guys have been different class. Oh how we have cried out for a midfielder with pace, energy, vision and a desire to control a match from start to finish. Reminds me of Phill Scott when he first burst onto the scene.

Special mention also to Jacko and Irvine. Quite brillaint.

Quiet 1st half from us against a side that look a shadow of the team that caused us so many problems last season. We looked knackered and off the pace - good job Meadowbank are completely toothless up front. It was obvious at half time that the game, which the officials were making a complete pig's ear of, needed a goal. Saints were a different class in the 2nd half, with McLaren the pick of the bunch. We seem to be able to attack at will now we've turned the corner which is very pleasing. Another great Saturday night feeling - keep it up Saints.

Agree with your assessment of us but thought they looked a decent side, if toothless like you suggest. They moved the ball really well and gave us the runaround for spells in the first half. Couldn't live with us in the second period though.

It's nice to see Saints picking up now we have some consistency in selection. That's six wins in our last seven games and the two strikers have thirteen goals between them in the same period. McLaren is finally showing what sort of player he can be, Quinn is a top quality player and a McInnes and Sheerin are at the top of their form. Really isn't a failure in the side at the moment.

Regarding the PK incident, supposedly there is now a new rule that if an attacking player encroaches, the opposition are awarded a free-kick. Looking at Richard's link, why penalise Peaso though when they had two players in the box as well?

In the Sunday Mail, it's claimed the ref believed there were too many Saints players in the box at the time of the penalty. Again, surely he would still have ordered a retake?

That was my second game of the season. Given that the other one I went to was the game at Clyde when we were awful and looked to me like relegation candidates, yesterday was a huge improvement. Perhaps it's a bit of a worry that it's two players who are only here temporarily - Deuchar and Quinn - who seem to have a lot to do with the turn-around, but still it's a huge relief to me to see us once again playing good football and also looking like a team with a lot of goals in us.

As others have mentioned, I thought Livi looked like a pretty good footballing team in the first half without ever really looking like doing us any damage with their pressure. In fact even in the first half it was probably Saints who had the better chances. In the second half we played some really good stuff - McInnes played his role perfectly and allowed the others to do the attacking. I thought Deuchar had quite a quiet game but he actually seems quite happy to play that way and allow Jackson to thrive alongside him. Deuchar's a very unselfish player and I think that the great partnership they've struck up very quickly has a lot to do with that.

The penalty decision was baffling, but I suppose it's just a good job we were home and dry by that point and it didn't really matter. Had the result have hinged on that decision then I think we'd be hearing a lot more about it. Can you imagine if that had happened at Hamilton on the final day of last season??

totally dont understand the referees decision for the indirect freekick after the penalty take. Looking from the video above it looks as if he has blown his whistle but was watching the players on the edge of the box instead of the penalty. After the penalty had been scored he immediately raises his hand to indicate the indirect freekick from the encroachment of peaso. Totally the wrong the decision but surely the assistant referee should be able to point out such a simple error which could affect the game/league.

Surely he would have had to obstruct him AFTER Sheerin had kicked the ball but BEFORE the ball crossed the line, otherwise the ball is not in play so no freekick can be given.

It looks like the last thing he does before the kick is taken is to warn the players at the top of the picture not to enter the box. When the kick is taken Peaso is well in the box, clearly ahead of 2 Livi guys making him the first person to commit an offence. When the ref is walking over to give the free kick, his left arm looks as if it is indicating someone had gone into the box.

I'm sure he has penalised Peaso for encroaching and has given the wrong decision with the free kick instead of a retake.

Infringements/Sanctions

If the referee gives the signal for a penalty kick to be taken, and before the ball is in play, one of the following situations occurs:

The player taking the penalty kick infringes the Laws of the Game:

the referee allows the kick to proceed
if the ball enters the goal, the kick is retaken
if the ball does not enter the goal, the referee stops play and restarts the match with an indirect free kick to the defending team from the place where the infringement occurred
The goalkeeper infringes the Laws of the Game:

the referee allows the kick to proceed
if the ball enters the goal, a goal is awarded
if the ball does not enter the goal, the kick is retaken

A team-mate of the player taking the kick infringes the Laws of the Game:

the referee allows the kick to proceed
if the ball enters the goal, the kick is retaken
if the ball does not enter the goal, the referee stops play and restarts the match with an indirect free kick to the defending team form the place where the infringement occured
A team-mate of the goalkeeper infringes the Laws of the Game:

the referee allows the kick to proceed
if the ball enters the goal, a goal is awarded
if the ball does not enter the goal, the kick is retaken
A player of both the defending team and the attacking team infringe the Laws of the Game:

the kick is retaken
If, after the penalty kick has been taken:
The kicker touches the ball a second time (except with his hands) before it has touched another player:

an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team, the kick to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred*
The kicker deliberately handles the ball before it has touched another player:

a direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team, the kick to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred*

In the sun today it had an interview with john rowbotham and he said the goal should have counted or been re taken.

because the ball was hit directly at goal and went it he would have given the goal and if there had been an "assault" on the defender by an attacker he would have let play go on then dealt with that issue.

so his view, although he never saw the incident is that if the ball had been saved and come back into play he would give the free kick if mcdonald had fouled one of their players.

according to the sun the sfa want answers from the ref.

Apparently Mark Proctor was told by the ref that the decision was made as the result of a new ruling. Is there any evidence of this new ruling anywhere? I imagine tomorrow's PA might provide a little more information than the other papers have given so far.

but the indirect freekick was given inside the box so surely if he was obstructing the player then he would have been awarding the freekick on the edge of the penalty area where the 1st offence was commited.

Okay, time to own up to having actually qualified as a referee...

I wasn't at the game, but there's no "new rule" that would make sense here. The indirect free kick to the defense should be awarded if and only if the kick is missed and an attacking player commits an offense.

So that guy's clearly fudged up and I wouldn't be surprised if the SFA discipline him.

I wonder if the club still paid Sheerinho his goal bonus, after all he did score a perfectly good goal.

That ref was absolutely shocking throughout and was clearly awarding decisions based on what was shouted from the stands, the linesman in front of us was totally incompetent as well- why did neither linesman call the ref over to ask what the hell he was playing at awarding Livi a free kick when we should have been given a goal? I know the refs in charge but the linesman are there for a reason too and should have said something to him at the very least.
