very important game now. a defeat will see us 7 points behind the scum with hamilton possibly even further ahead.

also, i love to dislike dundee fc with a passion

reckon we'll go home with 3 points after a hard fought game next weekend

If we had won today we could have gone above them next week if we beat them. Now we might go 7 points behind. Thats how important todays game was.
Pity the players thought they just had to turn up.

I think if we beat Dundee at Dens we'll beat Dunfermline at Dens. Good pratice. Dundee have been drawing a lot recently and if we win that's a major result since we'll be right up beside them bar a point and with Hamilton at Dundee Utd. in midweek they may drop points at Dumfries next week.

I lived in Baldovan Terrace once which was quite near the ground and I heard on the radio that Ross County (a Highland League club playing in tartan) were beating Dundee at Dens. So I zoomed out the house and ran along the road and got into the ground only to see Dundee equalise. :( That could have been great.

Radio Tay reported that The Scum are attempting to secure a loan signing prior to kick off and implied he would start any ideas who it is? Also reported that Martyn Corrigan is eligible to play.

Is smashing up a few seats worth a weekender for,the reason it happened at legoland is we can get away with it as we take double to your place than you do to dens. Its fact in august 2,600 dees in november ariound 1000 fermers. We also dont do defeats at home even with 9 men.

Out of interest how big was the Dundee support at Perth in the 2-0 defeat in March of this year? I remember loads of empty seats but maybe I am deluded.

"One of the main reasons I wanted to come to Saints ahead of Dundee United is that I didn't want to move to Dundee," :D

does Weatherston get a start just for coming out with that line?

I may have done a wee bbc there by not adding in the line after it

"I didn't want to move up there on my own and once I spoke to the gaffer here he made me feel really wanted so I made my mind up to come to Saints."

wont be at this game never actually been to dens before and from what i have read a lot previously on the forum about some of the crowds i dont plan on a saints game in dundee anytime soon.

hope for a win. has it not been a while since we have beaten them in dundee? just hope its not a game that will allow hamilton to go further ahead.

Most of the Dundee stuff on here is banter, unfortuantly some take it too far and I have been told that in the past a certain Dundee fan even made comments via PM to a member on here about his kids !

I am surprised the mods have left the comments about breaking up seats as some on here may take this as authority to do this

My reasons for hating dundee, their fact that they spent money they never had to get players they could never afford and thus they cheated their way through the game for several years. I feel the same way about Livingston and Gr£tna.

As 1962 happened well before I was born I consider it never happened and if they win the league in my life time then I will worry about that then. It the same with the clowns down south and 1966.

Let talk about the football not the other crap thats going on in here

I love our cheeky banter, you skanky dundee prick
but your shagging of your sister, well, thats pretty fecking sick
You team are going nowhere, they really are so bad
Is that what you think of when your sucking off your dad
We'll see what happens down at dens,we hope that we can win
victory for your cheating team would be a bloody sin
But promise me one thing you bawbag, you smelly testies sack

For reasons that are personal to me I no longer post on the fourm unless its the eve of a Saints V Dundee game. So Dee4life, you are not the one that pm-ed people nor are you a bad person. I do not hate you and I hope you and you're family are well. I have no evidence that you have ever indulged in incest and apologise for any hurt this causes you.

Let me help with your theory - St Johnstone's hatred for Dundee dates back to at least the end of World War 2, decades before 1962. In the 50's many Perth people were arrested in Dundee on successive midsummer weekends when traditionally Perth people travelled to Dundee to watch Angus v Perth play cricket, women shopped in Dundee, men got tanked and wound up Dundee fans. The travelling support were almost entirely Saints fans who followed cricket only one day a year, when we played Dundee. (United were below us in the league and irrelevant) It is a long standing tribal thing and very local. You are the big town Perth is smaller. Its that simple.

1962 was symbolic for many but there was another surge of resentment in the '70s when Tayside Council was formed and people from Perth had to travel to Dundee to 'report' to their local bossses. Dundee United were still crap.

But one thing has significantly changed in fifty years. You are now a fading force and Dundee United are not. The '80s may have triggered an insecurity in Dundee fans that may never vanish.

St Johnstone have rode you so rigildy over many years it seems our world has changed too. I used to get off on hating Dundee, and to be honest was intimidated about going there to watch Saints. Now you are just a middle-ranking First Divisison team with no status, like Clyde with a bigger support. So there's not much to hate now. You are our panto villains from the past - that's it.

Ironically it now seems to matter more to you guys. Its a bit sad that so many Dee fans are always on St Johnstone boards trying to work out why you are loathed and seeking attention. When did that anxiety kick in - Dee? Was it 7-2 or 5-1 that did that. When did the crisis of confidence really harm your club? Successive financial failure has not been kind to you, nor have the bandits and frauds that have run your club.

Maybe we'll will never know why Dundee has declined so much and so spectacularly? But you were once a force in Scottish football and now your are not. So for decrepit old Perth reasons I hope we humiliate you yet again tomorrow. But I don't hate you. That only worked when we felt inferior - that passed away many years ago.

The thing that mystifies me most about Dundee is the desperation that has now infected your support - how long can a giant sleep before he becomes a dwarf?

C'mon the gloss-paints another win will do.

..... in the '70s ...... Dundee United were still crap.
.
That was an excellent summary of our local rivalry and what really makes local rivalries worldwide. In addition the point about Dundee being a major power which I seen personally for myself as a youngster and their demise to at least an ordinary club. To be honest I think that's Scotland wide as it now very difficult financially for a provincial teams to hold on to their star players which if they could then brings out the crowds.

I think Dundee Utd. were a lesser team than us in the early 1970's even with Andy Gray. They started it's rise in the mid 70's when they appointed manager Jim MacLean and assistant Walter Smith (once a United player) and seemed to combine shrewd purchases including Frank Kopel, Willie Pettigrew and Henry Hall and Alex Rennie from us with a high quality youth policy which brought through Dave Narey, Paul Hegarty, Paul Sturrock, Davie Dodds, Richard Gough Raymond Stewart etc. By the end of the 70's they won Scottish League Cups in a row (both at Dens) and were in Europe. The 80's were their decade.

Will Dundee, a potential giant or a potential bankrupt, rise again? Not tomorrow.

C'mon Saints!

I heard from an old guy in The Kirkside once that when Perth tradesmen applied for jobs in Dundee there were problems since there was often a requirement to be a member of a Dundee trade union, but being a member of a national trade union was irrelevant. On the other hand many workers from Dundee walked into jobs here irrespective of what trade union you were a member of - no closed shop

I don't hate Dundonians... I hate both their teams though... and it's football rivalry, but it's the reactions of some of their fans... a general smugness of the Arabs and the general sleeping giant pish of the Coags... I hate Sheff Wed and Notts Forest down south for the same reasons... your club is what it is... it can have great times, it can have poor times... accept this and accept that whilst you are down you are down and look to get back up, and when you are up, you are up, enjoy it!

On a common-sense note, I would urge folk not to try and break seats and be overly agressive tomorrow in the ground as the Tayside Polis love nothing more than picking on us Saintees, you think it is bad here... Dens is a whole new league... I one saw a Saints fan ejected from Dens for laughing when an club official from Dundee got struck by a wayward shot in a warm-up... be careful what you laugh at... even if it is the scramble when one of the richer Coags throws a coin at the linesman!!

3.After trawling the scaramouche and that bar drinking breezers he made his way to a nightclub but again to no avail his charm did not work on the female sex,so yet again a kebab and a taxi with ghostie in the back muttering "stuck up bitches" and scumdee coagies bastards!

Like some others on here, I don't really see Dundee as our serious "enemies" any more. They've become more like panto villains who we can make up daft songs about, and then they can come on here and call us farmers and then feel all warm inside, presumably under the impression that they're the first ones to ever think of it (by the way, I never really did understand the farmers thing - can anyone, Saints fan, Dundee fan or otherwise, explain where that comes from?). I find the Dundee support's insistance that they're secretly some sort of "big club" to be more amusing than anything else (and you've got to hand it to them - it is a Helluva well-kept secret).

Anyway, while it's a good part of football to have your local rivals, I save my true revulsion for the Old Firm - they're our real enemies in this game.

crap. total crap. played dundee off the park til we scored and that was it and after that it was pointless long ball after long ball. didnt look a threat up front at all and the midfield was very poor at times. is this the wake up call we need or just a reality check that we arent good enough to win this league?

also, why no red card for the penalty incident? surely a red card is the punishment for handball preventing a goal?

as for craig samson, most will disagree but the lad was only celebrating his team comin back from behind and i'm sure our man alan main would've done the same if not worse.

fair play to dundee, they deserved to win today. they played right to the final whistle unlike our lads who ran out of steam and ideas after half an hour.

First of all - thought it was a very good game of football - attacking and entertaining, although obviously a bastard of a result for us. It was a game of two halves if ever I've seen one.

We flew out of the traps and could have been well in front before we scored. Rocco threaded a superb ball into McLaren and he snatched his shot instead of doing what looked oh so simple and taking a touch round Samson and knocking it into the empty net.

Then minutes later Rocco had a great chance when again slipped through but this time Samson made an excellent save. From the resulting corner we had a header cleared off the line.

Then the controversy started. A Dundee defender misjudged a high ball and allowed it to bounce over his head. Anderson turned the ball back to Deuchar whose shot was heading for the corner of the net. A Dundee player (I think it was Palenik) dived and made a tremendous save - one that Craig Samson would not have made had it gone past Palenik. Iain Brines had a clear view and pointed to the spot.

Incredibly - and that isn't even a strong enough word for it - he only showed the Dundee player a yellow card. An absoutely disgraceful decision. Palenik cheated by blocking a shot deliberately with his hand that was heading for the goal. He stopped a clear goalscoring opportuniy - actually never mind a clear opportunity - he denied us a goal. There is no punishment other than a red card. The ref got it wrong - plain and simple.

Sheerin tucked it away, and we continued to play well. We restricted Dundee and kept going forward. Dundee only had one chance of note - Daquin heading goalwards with Main making a good save low to his left.

We went in 1-0 at half time with Dundee still having their full complement of 11 players on the park. We really should have taken an early chance and scored two and they really should have been down to ten men. We lived to regret this later on.

The second half was completely the opposite of the first, with Dundee this time setting the pace and causing us no end of problems. This was not helped by us coming out looking nervous and defending badly. Dundee had several great chances and played some great football, and equalised when we defended a set piece poorly.

The ball was swung over from the Dundee right and initially knocked away. It came back in and was played to the left side of the box where Dundee's player had time and space to pick his spot.

Dundee continued to push and we were really struggling, but eventually with approximaetly 20 minutes to go we started to play again. We had been losing the midfield battle badly, but started to pick up and had a couple of great chances to snatch victory.

They both fell to Steven Anderson - the first a header that was well smothered by Samson, the second a glorious chance inside the six yard box after a great ball in from the Saints left that he couldn't quite keep down.

Then disaster for Saints. Dundee attacked down the right, and Stanic blocked the first cross. It fell back to the Dundee player who attempted to play the ball across again. And again Stanic threw himself in to block it.

Unfortunately, it broke to a Dundee man lurking at the edge of the box. It wasn't closed down quickly enough and he picked his spot in the corner.

At the end of the day, I really do think a draw would have been a fair result. Those who say we didn't deserve anything clearly don't remember the first half. We controlled it, and lost the plot in the second half.

A note on the ref - Iain Brines. He apparently had a shocker midweek while officiating Motherwell v Rangers, and in my opinion, the SFA should now take his whistle away and never let him near one again.

He was awful today - and for both teams. So many times he just blew at random for nothing challenges, then he'd miss a blatant foul. He was not helped by his assistants. This is before you get to the penalty decision. He made up his own rules there, because they certainly weren't anything to do with football.

Overall, Dundee looked poor early on and couldn't handle the pace of Quinn, and McLaren to begin with. We really should have capitalised and taken a comfortable lead in to half time.

Alex Rae was clearly raging well before half time - he hooked Daquin before the break after a series of piss poor crosses - and clearly gave his boys a good rollocking at half time. They came out much more determined and hungry for the game, and deservedly equalised.

We didn't come out for the second half until there were 15-20 minutes to play, and I thought the game had become pretty even by the time Dundee got their winner. Very very disappointing finish.

crap. total crap. played dundee off the park til we scored and that was it and after that it was pointless long ball after long ball. didnt look a threat up front at all and the midfield was very poor at times. is this the wake up call we need or just a reality check that we arent good enough to win this league?

also, why no red card for the penalty incident? surely a red card is the punishment for handball preventing a goal?

as for craig samson, most will disagree but the lad was only celebrating his team comin back from behind and i'm sure our man alan main would've done the same if not worse.

fair play to dundee, they deserved to win today. they played right to the final whistle unlike our lads who ran out of steam and ideas after half an hour.

totally bang on summary.

Saints were well on top up until the first goal but didn't keep up the momentum from that point forward. Our left hand side is the weak point of the team and Dundee exposed that. Stanic isn't the player he was last season and Sheerin hasn't played well for about 2 years. Both need dropped at the least but we don't have any replacements.

When were on top he's as good going forward as were likely to get. Defending he seems to be leaving players with far too much space. It's maybe Sheerin that's causing him the problems.

I'd have changed the formation to 4-5-1 in the second half with Weatherson wide left, Sheerin further in & Jacko on his own with Rocco in behind him.

We lost that game because Rae corrected the problems with his team.

Absolute pish. We were ok for the first 10 minutes or so then allowed them to bog us down in midfield. Then Swankie comes on and we're all over the place and Saints had no counter. With Malone at left-back Weatherston should have been brought right on (I'd have hooked Sheerin and put Wullie out left). Strikers were very poor today and Irvine and Stanic were both off form again.

Tactically we lost it - too many hight balls and why on earth we persist in trying to play passbacks to a keeper who can't distribute the ball beats me.

Dundee are nothing fancy but they're working for each other and digging in - something Owen's side doesn't seem to have mastered yet (all the more annoying after the way we did so against SPL sides last year).

As for Samson he might have been celebrating but can you imagine what the action of the police had been had a Saints keeper done something similar at Ibrox or Parkhead?

Another poor performance and playing the "DONUT" formation!! Everyone round in a circle and bloody nobody in the middle!!

We again shoot ourselves in the foot. How can we lose a game as a result of half-time. They are pros and should know to keep it tight for 10-15mins after halftime which didn't happen.

If Coyle reads this my questions to him are:
1. Why do you insist on playing a left winger at right midfield?
2. How long do we have to endure old gits blowing out of there arse after 15mins, ie Sheerin, McManus and McInnes???
3. Why do we not shoot from over 10 yards out from the goal?
4. Why the long ball ALL THE TIME when we never win any?!?!?!?!

We could have done that. We do have options but Coyle doesn't seem prepared to try them.

Thought Deuchar was never going to get anything out of the 2 big defenders, can't complain. Jacko is wasted with lumps up the park.

Horrible way to lose, especially to Dundee of all teams.

Good in spells, but as stated by a few already think Coyle's decision not to change tactics/players left us outsmarted by ALEX RAE of all people.

A change to 4-5-1 would have clogged up the centre a little more and given us the chance to use our wingers a little more, Think we could have made a few more chances from getting in from the wide areas.

Weatherston was also not given enough time to make his mark, was the sort of player needed when we conceeded the goal.

Anderson, McInnes, Irvine and Quinn with pass marks today.

Shocking decision by the ref not to send the guy off. Imagine we missed the pen after he disallowed our goal - shocking.

Anyway, from one shocking decision to a dozen of them - Mr Coyle.

Wulllie on the right wing - seriously - is this his love child? Not a patch on Weatherston but hell that doesn't matter. McLaren is the most irritating player I have ever watched. He can do something brilliant but his end product is shite. Bin him - waste of space.

So, after 25 mins we had established it wasnt working. The midfield was overrun, McInnes and Sheerin too slow, Wullie terrible and Rocco having to do the job of 4. With nobody to pass to the defenders had to lump it to the doc, who showed a timid side to him today - capitulating at every challenge. What does Coyle do? Just shut his eyes and hope it all works out. No tactical ability. No subs.

But wait, a he does make a sub.....everyone in the crowd expects the Doc do be subbed for Peaso as at least with Jackson we have some mobility but no, just leave the Doc up there even if he has won 0 out of 3,541 headers. Peaso came on and won 2 straight away but whats the point when your strike partner can't run? The Doc is excellent if he's winning the ball in the air but if he's not he's limited.

Anyway, next sub is obviously weatherston (the rest of the subs are there for show) and clearly ignoring how bad Sheerin has been he takes of McLaren who even if his end product is terrible was at least getting in positions to make a hash of them. Bad decision.

So all in all, Coyle ignored the fact that McInnes & Sheerin were being overrun and the result of that was a defeat - all the fault of Coyle.

We have been making allowances for Coyle's tactical naiveness for long enough. He can't change a game - we're one trick ponies.

Pish.

We bottled it yet again at Dens today. Since Dundee were relegated back to division one we have played five times at Dens, taken the lead five times and only won once.

In my view we were by far the better team for the first half, not just the first ten minutes or whatever, the whole of the half. Dundee were absolutely no threat and we had missed a few chances. If it had gone to 2-0 I think the game would have been over. There might have been more chance of this of course if Dundee had been correctly reduced to ten men.

Second half was a totally different story, would be intrigued as to what Coyle's half time team talk was. Contrary to what others are saying I don't think Dundee are that great, we made things far too easy for them and they hit us with that late, late goal.

It was a game that was there to be won and we blew it.

Coyle is tactically inept.

Its still hard to understand how he can't spot where the problems lie.

We have no midfield. The defence HAVE to resort to punting the ball to Deuchar, which clearly doesnt work. Sheerin is past it. I can't think of one good performance from him this season.

Sometimes I look at the positioning of him and wonder if hes instructed to drift into the middle? For the past few games he has been in further than Quinn. He's to old and to slow. He has lost his creative ability as the pace of the game is quicker than his feet and head.

McLaren - I personally blame Coyle. We have Deuchar (a target man) in the box crying to decent crosses so he can attack. (Both goals vrs Clyde were a resort of balls over from the wing) Surely you want players who can get to the byline and whip crosses in. What use is it to play a left footer on the right. He can't cross with his right so resorts to cutting in, giving the defence valuable time to close down, and get back to defend.

It defeats the purpose of using wingers. Also, Sheerin is no winger, time for him to be dropped.

McInnes man marks in the middle. Therefor tries to follow his man(which he did poorly against the youngsters like McDonald and Robertson). Time and time again, he leaves a massive hole in the middle, and time and time again Dundee exploited this. Whats the point in playing a holding midfielder, if he doesnt hold the play? He needs to be in that hole to break the play up. He gave the ball away numerous times today. I can barely remember him doing anything positive at all.

You look at the Dundee midfield. They won everything, first ball and second ball. They can tackle, they can create chances. McInnes can't and IS past it.

And I think its time folk stop defending him, and giving the usual nonsense that he does the stuff we don't notice, as he clearly doesn't. All you have too look at how much the Dundee midfield controlled the play to emphasis that.

I feel sorry for Jackson and Deuchar. Both are having to feed of scraps of the long balls from defence.

Rae's substitutions and change of tactic, changed the game in there favour. Coyle did his usual. Bringing Weatherston on with under 10 mins left, and taking McLaren off instead of Sheerin is beggars belief. Weatherston should have been brought on WELL before then! What player can change a game in 8 minutes?

These mistakes are the mistakes that cost us the league last year. He isn't learning from them! We will once again miss out on promotion.

Agree with pretty much all of that, although I don't think it's the midfield thats forcing the defence to punt the ball up to Deuchar. Main should be throwing the ball out to Stanic & Irvine (good attacking full-backs) far more often than punting the ball up to no one.

The defense should be trying to find Rocco, first and foremost, or Sheerin/Wullie. Can't complain about their defending but they need to pass the ball instead of taking the easy option of a big punt upfield.

I hope Coyle realises our weakness and just needs the time to get the right guys in. We had an old team last year that needed younger blood...some good young players have been brough in but there's still some work to be done.

Unfortunately that's true. Stanic rarely made a mistake before this season (maybe one or two a game max neither costly). This year he's been caught sleeping a couple of times and is struggling for pace. He's still a good player but not as good as last year.

Sheerin is the same - he can be good going forward if there's support behind him but with Goran not forward as much and Sheerin drifting into the middle more we have no real presence on the left wing. If Sheerin is being told to play through the middle fair enough but he can't tackle and his close play has been poor. Along with McInnes it means we have two slow players in midfield and yesterday were run ragged. Badly missing Hardie.

Even IF Dundee were £15 million in debt then we should be well above them if they are in so much trouble.

They restructured their debt anyway and are not in trouble anymore.

Dundees a shitehole, but they won the damn match yesterday and thats ALL that matters.

I fn hate that club but I also hate Saints fans who take pride in the fact that we are not in debt, hardly any clubs are in trouble due to this anyway!

Sheerin is spending too much of his time drifting inside to support McInnes who spent most of his time yesterday punting the ball out of the park. I know people say he does a lot of good work off the ball, but at the end of the day I'm sure we could find someone to do that job who doesn't have feet like an elephant when he gets the ball.

Think McLaren should be out left and Weatherston out right - hopefully they would give us some penetration down the flanks. Rocco in the middle with someone defensively minded to break up play would be a great combination I think.

McLaren is getting an awful lot of stick, but I think he has played well recently. The fact he has to cut inside to cross it every time or use his unfavoured right foot every time does not help his end product.

Wullie is fine when Irvine gets forward to support him but Gary barely got over the halfway line for the second-half yesterday due to covering against Swankie.

And while we're on the subject of wrong feet can someone please tell Irvine to use only his right foot - at least two panic punts with his left yesterday were almost as wild as a McInnes pass.:***:

With a bit of perspective upon yesterday you can see people are clearly hurting after losing to the scum! Haven't read all the thread but this is my view...

Dundee are a physical physical side who defend well and have the pace to play the counter attack game - we struggled with this, but IMO the slating of Willie McLaren is unjustified to an extent. He shows what he can do but too many times people don't look for him, and to be honest it was always going to be far too physical a game for McLaren and i didn't expect him to be in the starting line up. I mentioned this at kick off and said i was surprised not to see Davie Weatherston in there.

Thought our best players yesterday were the back 4. That says alot. Sheerin looks tired, and looks like he could do with a rest but he's not "been shit for 2 years" as i read on this thread briefly...he's had a few fantastic games this season, and i'm sure he will get back to it. He's being asked to go out on the left and it's a lot of work for an old boy you know!

I thought Rocco was doing the job of him and McInnes, as well as going out to cover McLaren at times and put in a power of work. Thought he was going to run the show, but struggled after 20 minutes due to doing other people's work. This also obviously had a knock on affect on the front two and caused them to drop back for the ball again...even Peaso was doing this when he came on.

One other thing is the hunger? There looked to be nothing and we've gone back to being second to the ball and waiting for the ball to come to the player - we were particularly bad for that at the start of the season and it looked it yesterday.

However, it's not all doom and gloom. The defence were pretty solid yesterday (apart from the few passbacks!) and we know we can do it - we never play well at Dens (or generally infront of a good away support!) but once we conceed a goal there's nobody giving it the heads up and leading them on in my opinion. In the words of Richard Gordon (or 208Saint!) "We can do this!"

Good to see they are still bartering with children in juteville. Suppose sending the bairns up chimneys is still a major career through there.

As much as i love good ole coagie bashing and the banter can we stop the stupid posts and talk about the game? This thread would prob be a lot shorter and a lot better without it!

Lets talk about the game!

I think every thing that needed to be said about "THE GAME" has been. And who appointed you as the judge of what the thread would be better with or without. What you dont like don,t read.As for length of the thread; I was not aware we had size restrictions in the forum...

If you want to talk about the game would it not be better to start a Saints Dunfermline thread as thats what we need to concentrate now.:-)

Don't get on at me, the more you give the Dundee fans attention like there is the more they will return to be on the 'wind up' and the more this will turn into P&B of wind ups...trying to have a decent discussion is hard because reading pages upon pointless posts from them!

And there is bandwidth issues was there not, hence there's no avatars and things is there not?

Lets get this aftermath over and then on to Saints vs Dunfermline during the week...

Didn't think we played too bad, the middle of the park is a problem with Sherrin finished and McIness finished years ago.
McDonald is hopeless aswell and needs to go with the other two.

Still think we are a far better team than the Accies and the Dee.

We will win this league this season it's only 10 points and I don't include Dundee as a major threat.

I would bet my house on it.

[QUOTE=Broon;106854]Wulllie on the right wing - seriously - is this his love child? Not a patch on Weatherston but hell that doesn't matter. McLaren is the most irritating player I have ever watched. He can do something brilliant but his end product is shite. Bin him - waste of space.

Your right he is pish, he has had a few games to prove him self but looks sh#te, time to give Weatherstone a go.

It is always very easy to criticise with the benefit of hindsight, that's why most of our footballing pundits never quite made it in management.

Think McLaren should be out left and Weatherston out right - hopefully they would give us some penetration down the flanks.

McLaren is getting an awful lot of stick, but I think he has played well recently.

If McLaren plays on the left will this stop him pulling out of almost every challenge he ever goes in for? There was an instance yesterday where he actually produced a terrific bit of skill, left the full back for dead who had slid in late and was poised to run up the flank for what looked a meanignful Saints attack. Instead McLaren stopped and claimed for a free kick that wasn't given. On another occasion Quinn played a delightful ball in to him at the back post, far from an easy chance but a shot at goal was a given. Instead he looked at the ball unconvincingly and it ran out for a goal kick.

McLaren is probably the most frustrating player at the club in that he can on occasion produce moments of superb skill or deliver a great assist, on others however to me he looks completely disinterested and would rather be anywhere else other than in a St.Johnstone shirt.

Coyle is doing him no favouirs by playing him on the right. As has been said many times he has to move infield instead of going to the byline to put over dangerous crosses away from the defence rather than looping crosses down thier throuts.
The reason he didn`t go for the cross to the back post was that he does not have a right foot. Before a smartarse gets in first. He does have a right foot but can`t use.

Any player who does not go for a 50/50 ball or in Wullies case a 60/40 ball has no place in professional football unfortunately.

Don't be stupid.

I think any person with a basic knowledge of football, can see where the problems lie. But we continue to play the same tactics over and over again.

These mistakes are the same mistakes which were made last year. Are you happy with another year in Div one?

Most of the board have the same oppionion. Purely becuase the problems are that obvious.

but if your happy with two aging midfielders who offer nothing, and could easily be replaced by hungrier and better youngsters, and playing the same tactics, and same substitutions week in week out, good for you. But I predict alot more draws and defeats.

YES

The reasons being we should win more games in div 1 a bit of entertainment .how many points out of 8 times we play the OF will we get.Not to mention their obnoxious fans 8 times a year.Smacks of lack of ambition,no i say there are still the cup competitions .At least we not going to have seasons stuck ,fed up ,bored, similar to the likes of stmirren or falkirk as examples.Dont know how their fans can stick it.Better where we are winning more than we lose and hopefully a nice cup run. This is our level .spl is crap and too restictive.I would rather us having good seasons in div 1 and doing it in the cup.you just cannot enjoy the spl when you are stifled and constantly losing even though you dont go down. Its reality .

Correction - Paul Hegarty was bought as a young player from Hamilton. I'm sure he finished his career with us or near enough in Alex Totten's Barmy Army team of 1989/90..

You make a good point Roy but is that not beause the SPL is too small, it should be 18 teams and we'd only need to play the OF once each at home but then it actually means something then. A bigger league means more open attaking football rather than the great negative Scottish sides of recent years. Even harlie Christie said that before he jacked it in. More variety too. It's a bit tedious playing the same teams every quarter.

thats right ronaldo. The spl is too small and should be either 16 or 18 teams.Cant think of any country that has a top league of 12,that plays each other 4 times with a split .Its a joke .And the excuse the nation isnt big enough to have a bigger top league is bollocks. What we need is entertaining .

Exactly if they don`t get a respond they will go away. It`s all pretty childish on both sides.

think its worth highlighting BOTH SIDE it was quite obvious he was going to come on here after the game. if your going to give it out you have to take it too.

I keep forgetting that hardie is out, is he going to get a chance to play with rocco so we can at least have two men in the middle finally.

on a note about willie i have noticed it seems to take a long time to get started and some games just does not do it. is he any good as a sub so we can get 20 mins out of him near the end if a game?

I agree that the current set-up is rubbish, but how is an increase to 16 or 18 going to make things more entertaining? From what I can see, the only thing such a change adds to the equation is even more meaningless games than there are at the moment. Remember, the whole reason a set-up with smaller leagues was chosen in the first place was because it was thought that everyone would have something to play for and that would be more entertaining.

i don't agree with this meaningless games of a larger league. Let's say it were 18 for example SJFC would have all these teams at home - Dundee, Hamilton, Partick, Morton, Livingston, QOS, Dunfermline, Rangers, Celtic, Hibernian, Hearts, Aberdeen, Dundee Utd. Gretna, Kilmarnock, Motherwell, St.Mirren, Falkirk and Inverness CT.

Variety for the players and fans and of course much more alternative styles and tactics.
It allows for teams who might be 14th or something the mental framework to attack.
You don't get bored seeing the same teams all the time.
No SPL split.
You can introduce youngsters much more easily.
It's easoier to get promotion again to the top league.
A small team and their fans can achieve dreams for a season or two, I seen Arbroath in the top flight.
There will be high scoring occasionally by the bigger teams and ocasionally shocks.
You can easily get six live radio games out of nine games.

The move to a 10 team SPL, now 12 was to make the top league more competitive but I wouldn't say it's more entertaining, that we're better off in Europe, but instead our managers are more defensive/cautious minded and our players don't express themselves as much as in the past. It's too tight. Also with one relegation place it's stagnant. The big five want it that way because football is simply about money not much more. Ironically Hearts and Hibs have both been in the 1st division but would have just been a bottom six club in a bigger league and been able to rebuild their squads, an option which is not available today. Dunfermline, Partick, Livi, Saints etc would not have had the financial shocks they have all had to accept since they might just have had a year or two in the lower part of the league. So the financial arguement is not that clear cut.

As Roy said and many others including professionals believe the current setup stifles teams and the leagues are too tight. Other small countries have larger leagues - Holland, Belguim, Sweden, Norway, Portugal etc. it's not just for the big nations.

I've witnessed both and I much preferred the 18 team league system.

Sorry, but I just don't buy it. I don't really see that league as being particularly entertaining at all. I think it's almost certain that, within 10 years, everyone would be complaining about the low crowds brought about by the meaningless games, and everyone would start saying "oh, wouldn't it be great if we changed to a top elite league of 10 or 12 clubs". You're effectively giving automatic promotion to the likes of QoS and Morton who haven't even come close to earning it - if you put that league in place next season, you'd have clubs like QoS, Clyde, Morton etc going to Ibrox and Parkhead and getting walloped. It wouldn't increase the level of competition - if anything it would make things much, much worse, and even more ridiculous.

I know I've said it on here before, but I want to see an SPL1 and SPL2 of 12 teams each, where the clubs play each other twice (22 games) before splitting into a top Championship league of 8, a Play-Off league of 8, and a Relegation league of 8 (playing each other twice again which amounts to 36 games in a season, increased variety, more to play for, a better chance than at present of smaller clubs getting some matches against the OF, etc etc etc).

I explained that system on here and it is based on what Gordon Smith experienced in his playing days in Switzerland. I would acccept that.

I want to know why Scotland today produces decent goalkeepers, defenders and midfielders but has very limited forward talent. Is this because of coaching, the league setup or a generational thing?
