How would people be lining up on Saturday?
Sheridan will probably walk straight back into the side after suspension, at the expense of?
Depending if Owen plays 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 it may be at the expense of Anderson. Mensing moved to right back or centre half to accomodate Sheridan?
Would personally like us to the same as against Clyde, with the exception of Jancjyk in for Henry:
Cuthbert
Anderson James Rutkiewicz
Stevenson Sheerin Mensing Jancjyk Stanic
Scotland Coyle
Subs: Dobbie, Jackson, K Fotheringham, Henry, Paston.
Although, as much as Coyle kicked butts i would maybe play Jackson instead of him, his pace could terrorise Stranraer's defence! :D And well, does the OCC have THAT much pace left in his old age?! :P
Many of us making the trip? Good day out! :D Cannae wait!

Not a bad shout Hazel, especially if Jancjyk realises he has to turn in the type of performance I know he is capable of (have witnessed him playing well before anybody asks :***: ).
Would probably stick with Coyle for the first 50/60 mins and then let Jacko loose, but he must be given at least a full 30 mins against them.

And the fact that i would drop Henry is not singling him out, just that he is obviously pretty lightweight, but this will be a physical game. Jancjyk would be better suited IMO!
Maybe 100 Saints fans travelling down?
GAME ON!

It's a smaller park at Stair Park and IIRC we went with Savo and Peaso up front with a diamond 4 behind them - Scotland heading the diamond, Sheerin and Henry (?) behind them and Sheridan in front of the defence.
Would be tempted to go with that formation as Stranraer is a place where a narrow team would do well IMO, especially in the wake of the shoeing we gave them down there (but still only getting a draw :? ).
Sheridan has to come back, I would imagine at Anderson's expense - especially if we go 4 at the back. If we go 3, I would be tempted to keep the defence as was and have a straight swap Sheridan for Mensing. Obviously that is if Sheridan has to come back in - we could just stick with the winning XI from last week and have Scrappy on the bench?

Footy-tastic weekend for me! Going to Old Trafford for Man Urinal vs Liverpool on Sunday! :D
Meaningless match, not quite on a par with Baggies-Mackems!!! :?
Anyway, I would go 4-4-2 with a diamond 4 in the middle as our normal width problems aren't an issue on Saturday. One change to the team being Sheridan in for Anderson and as who to play in the hole, it wouldn't surprise me if Coyle gave himself and Scotland carte blanche to roam around the front areas, both dropping off and spearheading the attack, with John Henry playing in behind those 2.

We've tried pace (as have others) against Stranraer, and got little change. I would play Coyle again, as he was a good link between attack and midfield and that may be the best way to unlock a tight defence.

I disagree with that thought there Kev in the fact I would argue that pace has worked against Stranraer - especially down there - but the fact our strikers couldn't finish the pie supper in front of them meant we didn't win down there.

I'd be tempted to go 4-4-2 or even 4-3-3 (Jason, Coyle and Jackson). The pitch is a narrow one and ISTR fairly heavy so fast pacy wingers are out of the question. We need more battlers in the middle so I'd possibly be tempted to drop Ryan and stick Mensing on the right wing in front of Anderson. Sheridan and Sheerin in the middle (plus Scrabble on the left wing if it's a 4-man midfield).

18-01-2006, 01:10 PM
After the performance for most of the game last week I wouldn't change much.
If Sheridan is to come back into the team then I would drop Anderson and have Mensing play at the right of the back 3 and put Sheridan as the holding midfielder. I also agree that Henry is too lightweight and would agree with dropping him to the bench and bring in Scrabble. So, I would line up :-
--------------------Cuthbert--------------------
-----------Mensing----Ruti----James----------
--------------------Sheridan-------------------
Stevo-----Scrabble------Sheerin------Stanic
--------------Scotland-----Coyle--------------
Subs - Paston, Ando, Fotheringham, Dobbie, Jackson

Nah, they play deep, not much room behind the defence to exploit with pace and all our shots were past defenders before troubling the keeper. We need a clever player, able to find that wee gap or pull their defnce out of position.
Lot's of teams have pacy strikers, but nobody has pumped Stranny, so I would argue that it has not, in fact, worked!

I would argue we need a big striker who can mix it against them. It may be worthwhile considering ruti up there to help out. He has played as a striker for Aberdeen before.

Especially with Michael Moore out so not as much of an aerial threat will be posed at the back.

Ruti picked up a knock in training on Monday, as did Stevo (or maybe that was during the match). Not sure how likely they are to be available. I don't think now is the time to experiment though.
Stevo's was a hip knock but AFAIK it wasn't serious. Not sure about Ruti though.
another 3 points ta.we are gonna terrorise em this time :)
Says on the Stranraer website that 'kids under aged 12 get in for jack sh't when accompanied by an adult'.
Is this a new thing cos i definately paid for oor two when we were there last October?
(But fair play to them anyway. I'm all in favour of encouraging the next generation through the gates. 8))

Temple Reports up now - FWIW a much better performance than last week and we adapted well to the heavy pitch. Solid in defence and ok in midfield with Stumpy back though Henry was again looking lightweight. Thought Owen was too slow and off-form up front though.
Scotland and Mensing's goals were crackers but it was a good all-round team performance. :***: :***: :D

Some neat play today at times, on a heavy pitch which has already been commented on.

I agree, I thought we played better last week but today was all about getting the three points.
I thought the performance today overall was better - the pitch meant a different type of football on offer (less sexy passing and more grit) but we looked more comfortable over the 90 than we did at Broadwood. We were a lot more like a team (rather than the rollercoaster at times at Broadwood). Defence was lot better and even when Stranraer had the pressure in the 2nd half we looked fairly solid. The midfield seemed a lot more stable - the passing and tackling was a lot better and we were supporting the strikers more than at Broadwood.

Another tremedous strike from Scotland laid on superbly by the OC, as i've said before apart from one tap in all Scotland's goals have been top drawer.
Good also to see Mensing on the scoresheet, took his goal well latching on to the already praised excellent through ball from Shez. Mensing at last starting to look like the player i thought he was, think the game at Airdrie where he played centre mid was poss the turning point.
