Scottish cup time again, hopefully another trip to Hampden but not very likely!!
Not sure whats best the 3 in midfield, where we played some nice stuff against PT or go to a 4 with David Weatherston?

Hopefully Raith will fill up a bit of the north stand and get a decent atmosphere, was thinking th other day about the rain soaked game in 2003 at Starks and a 4-1 game anybody else remember this one??

i would like to see the 3 in midfield again and play some good football. if we do play 4 with david weatherston im sure his pace will also cause some hassle for raiths defence. all i really want to see is a good performance and a few goals.

My favourite Rovers memory was playing them right at the start of a season...maybe 94/95? Fairly sure it was just after we'd gone down to the First Division. Anyone help me out with the score/date details? May have been 1-1?! My abiding memory is a big Saints support behind one end on a sunny day and pissing against what was basically a wall that constituted their "Toilets"!
Be a tough game for us on Saturday. Just hope we get the ball down in the midfield and play a bit - especially down the wings.

Just to fill everyone with a bit of confidence, we have only scored 1 goal on Scottish Cup 3rd Round Saturday since 2000.

2000 Rangers H 0-2
2001 Dunfermline H 0-0
2002 Aberdeen H 0-2
2003 Airdrie U A 1-1
2004 Motherwell H 0-3
2005 ICT A 0-1
2006 Gretna H 0-1
2007 Ayr H 0-0

That record really is dire, and lets hope it improves. I hope McInnes goes with his strongest team possible because Raith Rovers are useful, as they showed in the Challenge Cup tie in August. I'd line up the same as last week.

Good stats Calloway, dire really ive been to most of them and only Baxters fluke goal away to Airdie is all i can remember

If 3rd round replays count we put 2 past Ayr on a cold wet night.

Spot on, Mark Baxter is the only Saints player to score in a third round 'first leg' game in the Scottish Cup in 8 years.

As for the three replays in that time, lost 3-2 at Dunfermline after being 2 up, needed pens to beat Airdrie and needed a late late Peaso goal to avoid pens at Somerset Park last year.

Good freekeck by JAson, and a good finsh from Peaso, Never been so cold in my life, also missed my train back to Glasgow due to the extra time.

Hopefully this year we can make it easier on ourselves, by getting an early goal and dominating thr game. Wonder how Marvin Andrews is playing these days??

I was at that game - it was the first game of the season after we were relegated. I'm pretty sure it was Callum Davidson's Saints debut. Peter Davenport also possibly played for us? I remember Colin Cameron scored for Raith, but not sure who scored for Saints - might have been Davie Irons??

Great, thanks Blueheaven! Davie Irons rings a bell. I had thought it might have been his debut but you're right - I think he was the scorer. Was certainly a better away day than Sten*****muir that season!

Twas indeed Davie Irons that scored and I think Peter Davenport played as a trialist. George O'Boyle and John O'Neil's debuts as well that day

Just as well it's the 4th round on Saturday then eh!!!!

Hopefully a fast paced game full of goalmouth incident roared on by a good and vocal crowd. I would like them to start with the team as against Thistle but with Jacko on instead of Peaso . We looked so good when Jacko came on and played some great football.Same again please Del....:D

Wonder how Marvin Andrews is playing these days??

Marvin Andrews has been injured for the past few games. Don't know if he will be fit for Saturday.

They had a problem against Ross County where Mark Campbell got injured (I think it was in the warm up) and another defender got injured early on in their game and had to come off. They had Andy Todd and Ian Davidson (normally a midfielder) in defence and I am told that the rest of the team were not sure what they were doing with the new shape. I have also been told that Goodwillie (sp?) who seems to be scoring most of their goals has not been given permission to play as Dundee don't want him cup-tied.

If we play the way we have the last few games (even the dundee one) then we should win this but saints always struggle against teams they should beat!

I think a 4-3-3 may well work well against Raith (with jacko, savo and mcbreen up front) but I dont see it working in the long term, although id love to be proved wrong

Seems like they are giving us false hope-but if we play to our potential then it wont matter one way or another.

I've always wondered after that Darts commentator said "They'll be dancing in the streets of Raith tonight" after Jocky won the World Championship (and after 16 pints) why Kirkcaldy's team are called Raith Rovers. Is it similar to our own origins?

I'm pretty sure Raith is the name of a district in Kirkcaldy - if so, then it technically would actually be possible to dance on its streets!

Not sure it's got streets as such BH but Raith is a huge estate just outside Kirkcaldy which was once owned by the Ferguson family so maybe they helped to start the team, strange one though and one that has held my interest for many years.....

There is no Raith area in Kirkcaldy.......Raith Rovers started out of a team called "Raith Rovers" who were a different team. The "old" Raith Rovers merged with Cowdenbeath fc....Then there was a break away group who set up the current Raith Rovers........The "old" Raith was seemingly named after the guy who started "old" Raith.

Mair nonsense trivia really but.... sure we went about 28 years unbeaten at Starks park from 1971 onward - our GREAT team of 1971 lost a Scottish Cup 3rd Round Tie there 4-3 (i remember being a wee laddie and just coodnae believe we'd lost to a team a Division below us !) but we didn't lose to them again till I think a Boxing Day game in the late 80's (??)

The thing is during those years we always struggled to beat them in Perth !! - including a 3-1 League Cup Quarter Final defeat after a 1-1 Draw at Starks.

Glad I'm no superstitious..........

That 3-1 defeat was by a really good Raith team. I remember going down to Raithon my own in the car (others were working or on holiday) one wednesday night in August in the early 80's and we beat them 4-0 and I'm sure that was the League Cup but it might have been the League.

The blanket was made redundant when we got undersoil heating in. Unfortunately ti looks like the temp was too cold even for the heating which is why there's an inspection.

ISTR the undersoil heating was required for the SPL while the balloon was apparently more effective.

Is the Undersoil heating thermostatically controlled or just set at 'on'?

Way to go Saints.Every other team who has undersoil heating have playable pitches(I don't think Livi have it , unless you know different) and we don't. It,s a beautiful winters day and we would have had a decent crowd but have shot ourselves in the foot again...What is going on up there.

Spot on mainstand, our undersoil heating has a 'Low Torrance' contraction mechanism and if turned up too high, the pitch will turn to a muddy sludge. These systems are 90% successful but even St James park suffer the same problems. Don't think the club are to blame. Blame that bloody Jack Frost!!:p

Livingston and Partick Thistle, two teams with USH both had their games called off. One because they didn't switch their USH on at all, and the other because it wasn't switched on until this morning.

Saints have fecked up again whether it be covers or not having the ush on. someone at mcd made a decision which was against all weather forecasts, they fecked up no arguements. The ush should have been on from thursday but someone decided not to switch it on then.
As for you saying Saints had more to lose than us moaners, you tell that to the Raith fans who came thru to Perth or the Saints fans who made the journey from all over Scotland, I think in relative terms they lost alot more than Saints.

"it's only a game of football",
it might only be a game of football but when you have organised your day/weekend around it and wasted tens of pounds in the process then it is more than just a game of football it can be your whole budget because you support your team and that "game of football"
Saints have feckedup, plain and simple.

Disappointed that game was off yesterday.
As Raith fans living in Edinburgh we'd bought our tickets and started our journeys before we heard that the game was off.

I have no problem with the reasons given for the under-performing USH - ie the possibility that full blast would have destroyed your turf.

However, given the fact that the USH wasn't going to be used to full capacity and given the fact that the low temperatures were known in advance, why wait till high noon to have a pitch inspection?

Surely a local ref could have been brought in to have a 9am inspection? At this time of year the sun is never going to get above the stands to do the work that the half-capacity USH coudn't do.

People seem to think that we're living in the 1950s where all Raith fans live in Kirkcaldy and all Saints fans live in Perth. Society is different - many fans are dispersed around the country and whilst a noon inspection will have stopped the bulk of a Kirkcaldy-based support travelling it didn't help some others.

Yesterday might have seen about 600 travelling fans. Tuesday night will probably see about 300.

PS Arriving in Perth yesterday we were struck by one thing - that's a pretty big station for 3 trains a day.

Kirkcaldy etc aint that far away from Perth so why are 300 out of 600 fans not gonna go to the tuesday night game....its not as if the shops are open at that time of night as they are on a saturday.

I think 300 of the 600 won't travel as the next round opponents are not attractive. Potential banana skin at Cove; we'd probably get beat by Ross Co.

Given our injury problems I think we'd be quite content not to progress and let Ross Co get involved in more games.

I think a big chunk wont travel, because they have wee kids, or midweek doesn't suit, or in the case of two buses, they have already paid to get the bus as far as Kinross before the game got called off, expensive stuff.

TgoJM, there is ambition at the club, but it's being channeled into the promotion drive which is a much higher priority.

With our small squad, any extra games = possibility of extra injuries.

Nope, I'd rather we concentrate our ambitions on promotion. Not defeatism, simply realistic in the light of a tight budget and a small squad.

It's a pity we didn't have our full squad available as I think it could have been a worthwhile game on Saturday.

Mainstand, these were probably non-official buses, hired privately by groups who probably like to arrive at the venues early and "enjoy the local hospitality".

Word on the streets is that big Marv might be available, but the concensus seems to be that we might not risk him and would prefer to have him gauranteed for Saturday's league game. If he does play, then Davidson should revert to midfield and overall our chances of "a result" will improve from "nil" to "slim".

Was a good game and Saints after a shaky first 10 minutes never looked in any real trouble. Good performances all round with the strikers looking good.Only down side was we should have scored 5 or 6 and were guilty of missing a few easy chances( mooner biggest culprit but he played great otherwise) and both centre halfs taken off injured.
Raith looked okay and really should have been 1 up. They missed a double chance before we scored that they will feel might have given them hope but hey , thats the way it goes.
We looked a bit dodgy for the last 10 minutes but I think we just took our foot off the gas a bit.Job done........Well done Saints

Pretty much sums it up for me.

Hopefully nothing serious with the Centre halves.

Ruti was down getting treated for cramp prior to going off so maybe he's just lacking a bit of fitness and McCaffrey's didn't look too serious. Defence weren't wasting the ball tonight, even McManus took a touch to get the ball on the deck and passed it out!!

Thought Jackson looked good tonight, took his goal really well and Savo was his usual good self with Peaso drifting in and out and having some great touches.

Moon had a great game, composed on the ball and done the simple thing really well. Made some great forward runs too and on another night would have scored a couple.

We knocked the ball about well so hopefully this will keep the momentum going for the upcoming league match.

Pity Dundee didn't draw. Would have been good for us if they had to play an extra game.

On the other hand, I had £20 on St Johnstone, Dundee and Livingston all to win so it worked out quite nicely!!

Should have strolled it after going 2 up but we missed a lot of easy chances & when they made it 3-1 we looked a wee bit jittery, as we were in the first 10 mins.

McCaffrey played well until he went off & Ruti setteled into a good game after the first 10 mins. I just wish he would cut out these 80 yard balls that go nowhere.

Main had little to do but still managed to make his defence nervous with his constant bawling even when there are 23 men in the other half. His kickng is still poor . If he wasn`t kicking it down big Merv`s throught he was kicking it out of the park.

Workmanlike was the best way to describe it. There were some good individual performances but we struggled to get going as a team I thought (and again too many high long balls). Midfield seemed disjointed at times. Sheerin looked off-form but apparently was suffering from a cold. Mooner should have done better with the goals but he got into scoring chances and had a good game otherwise while Craig came onto a better game and Savo and Jacko both played well.

Raith seemed to suffer from losing the early goal and weren't able to push forward as much in the first half. Andrews looked good until Jacko started running at him but I was impressed by Templeton the no 11.

Overall good win though - gets a banana skin out of the way early

They'll be crying in the streets of Raith tonight!

In short we were the better team. Jackson and Mooner looking great potentials and we acquired them from SJFC Youth team. Good balance to the team and I'm glad McInnes is continuing with the 4-3-3, it's the way forward and back (into the championship race).

Saints played well against a poor Raith team and despite us carrying a few players.

I am glad we won and very glad that they were crap.
Still an awful lot of work to be done starting with some much sterner opposition, away this Saturday in the League.
Highlights were Mooner, Craig, McCaffrey (For his short spell), McManus, Jacko and Savo. Ruti was dreadful but fortunately (credit where credit is due), Main made a couple of good reflex saves which kept them out in the early stages. Sheerin was a pretty mixed bag again. And why oh why do we keep bringing on our pacy, top scorer from the 3rd division last season and then completely ignore him? Freshest pair of legs on the park and he is like a ghost. Seen him make a couple of blistering runs into space, simple pass and we've scored but no, its punted into the stand from 30 yards out. He starts out on the right, is ignored completely as all the tired players play it down the left. He moves to a central / leftish position and the ball is punted up and down the right! He does exist doesnt he? I am not imagining Davie Watherston , am I?

Took advantage of the nice "discount" and moved (temporarily) across to the West stand just to see how the other half live with their plush seats - told to move as they were reserved for the "corporate businees folk" wow dont these "rock steady" stewards talk posh

Anyway i thought our performance was more like a training session-since so many players didnt seem interested-Sheerin-Craig-Peaso to name a few- we were damn lucky that the Raith guy missed early on and as one old pensioner in front shouted Mcinness "we need wingers" -I suddenly had a longing to return to the East stand.

3-1 flattered Raith...but had everyone been more interested it could have been 6 or as Kevin(tannoy box) would say (SIX) :***:

One wee aside, I asked a steward why we are not allowed to celebrate anymore... after the first goal she was asking people to sit down as soon as Raith took their centre... and apparently we are no longer allowed to celebrate after the game restarts... so if any future Saints scorers are reading this, please run into the net and punt the ball into the crowd so that we can have more than 45 seconds to enjoy ourselves for a change!!

Thought it was very comfortable, 3 nil up after an hour, many may forget the good effort all playes made in the 60 mins to get this scoreline. The last half hour was a good training session. First goal was critical and the long ball we had to score was immediate after what should have been a goal for the rovers. Yes :-) counter attack long ball football is superb!

We were quicker to the ball, sharper at closing down - good movement all round. I wonder if Im the only one who thinks there is a better spirit in the team? Good job! I would have cut someones hand off if they offered 3-1 final score.
