took the wee lass to cinema on saturday to see new harry potter flick and i have 1 question,

WHY IS THERE SO MUCH HYPE FOR IT?

its the only 1 i've seen but i'd rather spend a week in the cells than go through that again

Because its addictive reading. Im assuming you have never read the books? (the books are NOTHING like the movies by the way) You need to read the books to enjoy it. I know alot of people that have seen the movies, not enjoyed them so much, read the books and are hooked. But i agree the 4th movie was bad tho... could be here all day picking faults :P

I thought the new HP film was good, different to the first two and not as dark as the third but good never the less.

the first 20 mins or so were a bit too dark for the daughter (she is only 4 though) after that was fine.

I agree with Jenni, the books are far better. I used to slag my mate for reading them all, but once when I was waiting for the ex missus to get ready (nothing unusual) I read the first couple of chapters of the 4th one and was totally hooked - can't wait for the next book to come out now! While I still liked the movies (not seen the 4th one yet) the books are more exciting.

It was good... but iv just read the book too many times *** Spent the whole time spotting faults. Did enjoy it more the second time though! I recommend the books to anyone. Both me and my mum are obsessed :P Kids book? Pah! *** The 3rd is my fave out of them all.

have to admit i would like to see the new harry potter, not a book reader. saw the first film and then the second and while they were a good yarn they were just a touch predictable and similar to each other. would still be curious to see it

I have to totally agree that the books are much better than the films. The problem is, if they were to make the films any better (closer to the books) they would last about 10 hours each. All in all, it was a decent attempt.

My point was that I've never watched a film that is better than the book

I do not think it is possible to get a film that is as good as a book because you have your own thoughts about the storyline and your own mental imagery. Nobody (yet) can put that onto film...

I haven't read any of the HP books but I've seen all of the films (with the exception of the new one) and didn't particularly like any of them. It really annoyed me that in "the Philosopher's Stone", the actual stone barely seemed to have anything to do with the story. And "The Prisoner of Azkaban" was one of the longest, dullest and most confusing films released that year - and that's coming from someone who's normally a big fan of "kids" films and fantasy, Jim Henson, "Labyrinth"-type stuff.

I disagree that films can't be better than books, but that's just a matter of opinion. I personally watch loads of films but very rarely read any books. I think it's maybe just the case that the original format of anything is normally better. When a story starts off as a book and then gets made into a film, people generally say the book is better - but has anyone ever sampled the ones that do it the other way round? The stories that start off as films and then get adapted into books? In the ones that I've encountered, the books have always been terrible even if I've enjoyed the film.

Pretty much exactly the same boat as you. Used to rip my friends who liked the HP books before I started reading them myself. After the first one, which isn't very good, the looks are excellent. Just starting the 4th one now... saw the film before I read the book.

Really liked the most recent film - looking forward to reading the others now

Yeah your second paragraph is really what I should have written but didn't (easy to say now I know) It is also how I feel with MOST remakes of films.

Glad to say I picked up the first HP book one day in work after slagging off the woman reading it and hardly put it back down till it was finished. Of course the books and the films will always be somewhat different, but I for one certainky thoroughly enjoy both.

JKR has done more for the education system, getting so many kids and adults reading again, than all the so called academics put together.
