With the transfer window about to close on tuesday. Do we think OC has done enough to take us into a position to challange the Midden???

Personally i think we are in about the same position as we were before it opened with the addition of Winters and the departure of McManus. I had hoped for OC to be a little more active but that is probably unfair to him as from the comments it seems he did not get the people that he persued. At least on the up side we didnt panic buy so hopefully Winters turns out to be quality which would go some way to backing up OC on the fact that he wont sign players for the sake of making signings he will only sign quality but im still a little depressed

McManus wasn't in OC's plans but Winters clearly is (especially as we've been after him since the summer) so we are in an improved position in that we have another player who is going to make the team/squad every week. I would liked to have seen another couple of signings (hopefully we'll still get another midfielder and a keeper) but I'm also pleased we didn't resort the sort of panic buys that JC ended up making last year.

Still plenty of time... thinsg are only just starting to liven up. When a team signs X, they can then release Y etc. etc.

Will be more happy when we bring another keeper in

The cat has earnt the number 1 jumper, but if he was to go down, we are in all sorts without a number 2 keeper

Fecking algebra :x :***:

Apart from the algebra, I agree with Kev... As the spl clubs get more players they'll cast off one or two. We just have to hold tight over the next few days and see what comes of it... I'd expect at least 3 more players

After today the heat is on we now have a realistic chance and it will depend on the OC's signing power whether we can or not win this league but it is now a real posibility

anyone think OC still has a few targets......I rekon 1 or 2 may be brought in come tuesday. Hope they do anyway.

Has charlie Adam of the Midden gone back to the huns? I hope hes gone by the time we play them, i think he's a descent player.

Nope - in a West Coast Conspiracy Media Bias type of affair they extended his loan until the end of the season.
Personally I'm more worried by Corcoran starting to show some good form than Adam.

Thought the rules were that you couldnt extend loans....? Yeah agreed Corcoran has looked something special also. But we have Jason, who is as good (in fact probably better) than these guys.

Loans can be extended if the player is under the age of 23 or something like that, or indeed the player is moving to another West Coast team

I think now that we are in with an outside chance we should be looking to bring in another 2 or at least a proper wingback or winger.

The Davester has been offered a trial at Bury.

For the Davester to be able to sign for them, he would need to be released before 12midnight. Otherwise he will have a trial but not be able to move until the summer.

We do need to release him before midnight as if he is still contracted to us when the window closes, he cannot sign for another club as a professional as the SFL will not release his registration papers. However, if he is released before the window closes, there are no restrictions on his movement anywhere in the world!

Cheers for clearing that up - I assumed you could free someone during the transfer window. This window does seem to go against some of these 'employment' acts :?

Anyway, it says in the sun that we have released Mr Hannah so thats good news!

Don;t be surprised to hear about a further bid or two for Riordan before the end of the day. Read somewhere that this was to test the water as it is a good £150k below what they paid for Boyd and Hibs are holding out for more than that.

Yeah, they kept saying Mowbray wants another striker so assume it was Dalglish?

I'm sure Owen has other guys in mind, we could do we another striker to cover us until Peaso and/or Savo is back.

darn tootin a right winger would be a decent addition to a squad with no width....still some forward cover would be nice too...im just greedy!

So what's the general consensus on Coyle's transfer window activity? I think we needed another experienced keeper, and Gleenon fits the bill, while Winter looked impressive against Brechin, although he'll be judged against better opposition. I'm not too convinced by the Hardie signing though. His injury record has to be a concern, and in reality he's no more than an average first division player. I'm not sure that he really improves the squad in terms of quality that much, but hopefully he'll prove me wrong.

The failure to sign Morrow was a bit dissapointing, but I don't think McManus would have been a good signing. We're much better going with what we have already, especially with Peaso and Milne coming back. I personally would have liked to have seen a right-wing back come in, but again I don't think this was crucial to our future success.

Overall I'd say we did reasonably well in the window with three new players, but whether the first team has been improved enough for us to catch St. Mirren I'm not sure.

To recap:

In

Martin Hardie - Airdrie (until 2008)
Jamie Winter - Aberdeen (loan until summer)
Matt Glennon - Falkirk (until summer)

Out

David Hannah - released
Mark Campbell - Raith Rovers
Andy Jackson - Forfar (loan until summer)
Stevie McManus - Montrose
Mark Paston - released
Kieran McAnespie - Ayr United
Scott Paterson - contract expired

Personally, I think he has done alright. Paterson we knew would go after his injury, as would Kieran who never got back from pre-season. OC's treatment of Jackson is, IMO, a tremendous learning experience for a number of managers as he is not throwing the youngster in at the feep end at the top of Div 1, but progressing him through the leagues looking at his development.

As for players in, Winter looks an excellent signing, shame it is only on loan, and Glennon is the experienced, injury-free keeper we need alongside Cat. Hardie is one that I will hold my judgement on as he has never done much against us when I have seen him, but know of people who have raved about him in the past.

Looking at that list I reckon we've done quite well. We've managed to get rid of a lot of guys who were just picking up wages - presumably only buying out Paston and Hannah's contracts - and we've brought in guys who are hopefully going to challenge for places every week. We've strengthened in the right places but I would have like to have seen us bring in another wide player if possible. Overall I'll give Owen a B - good effort, could do better.

I'm reasonably pleased with the transfer window activity, if not blown away. When it opened I felt we needed an attack-minded central midfielder plus a natural wide player as a first priority, and a keeper, a right-back and an additional winger as second priority - so, looking at who we've brought in, I think we've done alright, although I'm quite disappointed that we still don't have any proper wingers in the squad.

Haven't seen enough of Glennon to have an opinion, but Winter looked the part on Saturday. Not sure about Hardie, predominantly because I think most First Division midfielders are much of a muchness and I can't really see him being better than those we've got - but I wish him well.

I suppose what it boils down to is that we've got rid of a fairly large group of guys who were nowhere near the first team, and brought in a smaller group who will be in much stronger contention for places (basically improving quality and cutting down on quantity), so I don't think anyone can really grumble much.

In general I would like to see Saints playing with wingers. However, when we have half the Umpa-lumpa cast from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory playing up front I dont see us winning many crosses! Subsequently, I am happy to wait for wingers until we get someone a little taller up front!

I wonder if OC let Jackson go away because he was assuming we'd be getting another striker in on loan - but, as we failed to do that, this could mean the next month or so could provide Dobbie with a really big chance to get back into contention. I hope he takes it, because I think he's got a lot to offer.

Crosses don't necessarily need to be aimed at tall strikers though. I actually think crosses are much more effective if they're drilled hard and low across the ground. If you had wingers who could get to the byeline and cut-back low crosses, it would provide excellent chances for our strikers regardless of height, and would also be very difficult to defend against.

true , but at set pieces , with the height we got ( le freak , ruti , even winters (i think he' s tall ) ) we should score more goals , even long cross to the back post for the on coming sheerin /stevo for the back post header / top corner volley

I am satisfied, but not over excited. I agree with the comments about needing a natural winger and was disapointed that after the colapse of the McLaren deal, more effort was not made to find someone else.

I would have liked to have got a striker in also, as with Jackson going off on loan we are begining to look a bit bare until the injuries clear up. It only takes one bad tackle on Coyle and Scotland at the minute for us to have only Steven Doris available as cover.

I agree with Chopper about the handling of Jackson though. He has given him a couple of appearances since he came back from Cowdenbeath to show that he still considers him a Saints player, but is allowing him to get regular games at a lower league side to further his development. Well done Owney.

I don't know enough about Glennon to comment. On Saturday, I thought his kicking was poor, but he did look very good in the air. Time will tell on this one, although I feel sorry for Cuthbert.

Winter looked good on Saturday and with more games, his fitness should improve. Pity its only a loan deal.

Hardie was a name I mentioned at the start of the window and I am pleased about this signing.

As for the rest of the players let go, it's a bit like, who cares. Felt sorry for Paterson that he got his injury as he was showing that he was still a class player, but we have to be ruthless.

All in all, we done OK, but still areas of the team that need to be looked at.

We did very well, if we are sticking to the current 3-5-2 then we have got exactly what we needed. Hardie gives us cover for scrappy, and winter does indeed look good. But tests ahead will prove him.

peaso and milne will be back soon enough, everyone forgets this, we only have 2 games in feb!
This lack of a striker coming in gives Dobbie a real chance to make an impact again. So hopefully he can take this with both hands.
