First month of the season draws to a close after Tuesday's game and I don't think anyone would have envisaged us having such a poor start, even with a below par pre-season.
I'm expecting a big reaction from the manager and players against a team we've already beaten this season but who have since picked up some decent form.
A decision obviously has to be taken on Dan Smith so I won't mention a left back but the rest of my side would be:
Main
Irvine - Anderson - McCaffrey - ???
Millar - McKoy - Hardie - Swankie
Holmes - Milne/Jackson

Put Millar in the middle instead of Hardie, Swankie on the right and Sheerin on the left and that would be my preferred choice. I assume if Smith isn't signed we'll have Craig in at left-back?

Main will be exhausted and exasperated after yesterday so I reckon McLean will come in to let Main get over it. I think Smith will be signed and Del will play some players not getting a regular match. They could do no worse.
Incidentally, if they were not called in today for extra training, I really would ask the question, why not?

I just feel Millar can get a bit swamped in the middle and has a bit more room out on the right. Admittedly it's maybe harder to track his runs from the centre but as good a player as he is, he was just bullied out of the game yesterday. I think we need to stick with Hardie as well (in the centre) as he's a key player and we need him to regain some form. It's for the same reason I'd contemplate maybe starting Jacko.
I know Swankie has said he's happy to play on the right (and is right footed) but for me we need to work on getting the best out of him down the left as it seems to be his primary position. Wouldn't be upset if he starts on the right though. Wouldn't have Liam Craig near my midfield on Tuesday but it's six and two three's between him and Sheerin for left back.
For me, the really key thing is we just get back to basics with regards formation. Nothing wrong with playing a 4-4-2 that has a ball winner and an attacking threat in the centre of midfield, some natural width and a big man/fast man partnership up front. If you took an aerial picture of the way we were lining up yesterday, a monkey could tell you it was ridiculous.

I would go with that but I would give Wheatherston a shot on the right instead of Savo.
Nothing against Savo but I think we need the width , a couple of guys that can get crosses in for Holmes & also protect the full backs which most teams now know is our problem & where most of the goals are coming from.

Playing a sweeper behind a back 3? If you are looking at a sweeper would you not be better with a 2 both picking up and supported by 2 wingbacks. Otherwise your 3 defenders are going to get drawn in and leave room up the flanks. Just a thought?

i think craig needs dropped for a while he was mince on saturday and I have been told he was terrible against the pars too.
not so sure about the form of hardie he seems to get rather moodie and does not use it to an effective manner recently.
would rather see two upfront and four in the middle with people making effective runs down the wings rather than having our strikers being pulled out wide and leaving no options in the middle.
we need sherring back.

i think craig needs dropped for a while he was mince on saturday and I have been told he was terrible against the pars too.
It's difficult because Craig showed us consistently that he was a good player last season but I think he's suffering a bit from thinking he's a lot better than he actually is. I'm not sure where he was supposed to be playing on Saturday but he was practically on top of Chris Millar in the middle for the duration of his match and completely ignored everything going on to his left, which was a lot of free running for Partick Thistle players.
Ironically, I believe his best performance for us this season has come in the left back role. I think - on current form - he should be no-where near the midfield but he would be my choice for the make shift left back over Sheerin for a few reasons. Sheerin is too slow to cope for ninety minutes and anyone with pace will murder him. Livingston have some pace up front and I just wouldn't do that to ourselves. So Craig in there for me to make way for someone else in midfield. I'd go with four in midfield and would play either Sheerin or Swankie infront of him. Sheerin probably - for me - because he can offer a bit more protection to Craig than Swankie can IMO. Although McInnes might want to add a bit more pace to the midfield so Swankie could be in contention for a start.
In the middle we can't afford not to put some brutes in there as we've been continually overrun in the last two matches. Back to the good old days when Hardie batters people for a living. Millar out right for me. Up front, only two strikers have shown any sort of form this season so it's an easy selection. Jackson might be in contention to play alongside Holmes but I would go with Milne myself.
As on the other thread:
Main
Irvine Anderson McCaffrey Craig
Millar Hardie McKoy Sheerin/Swankie
Holmes Milne/Jackson
That's assuming we don't sign another defender by tomorrow.
garydavidson
25-08-2008, 12:42 PM
If you mean Sheerin I guess you missed the Pars game?
yeah i meant sheerin, was not at the pars game. but after watching the midfield on saturday we could have done with someone who could hold the ball and make decent passes. miller just seemed to do nothing and seemed reluctant to go forward, even though he saw a lot of the ball.

I'm feeling good about it, its going to all come together...
I'd Start with:

-----Jacko----Holmes----
Livingston 1 - 3 St Johnstone

Irvine---Ando--Caff---Craig

For what it's worth, Davie might not be a bad shout. He's never given anything less than 100% and looks as though he is a handful for defenders because he's willing to have a run at them. Perhaps it's time messers Sheerin and Hardie made way for guys like Davie.

Completely Agree, I know its stating the obvious but he just tried to strengthen the midfield and up top too much and forgot about the back. If things dont get sorted before the window shut there will be some serious problems. Relegation contenders spring to mind.

I'd say:
Main

The Livingston side that played us at McDiarmid Park are not the sort of team we should be getting beat by. They are a very, very average side and I'm more gutted about this than either of the past two results because I know for a fact Livingston are not a good enough side to win the league.

AGREED! but at least there is no cup runs to mask the disappointing league form. We have something to concentrate on.
When a season starts as poor as this one, it is tough to turn it around. All we can seek is some stability over the coming weeks. We are struggling as a squad at present, and it is very difficult to get the feel good factor back when you are in such trouble.

Sounds more like it dont know how the other fans on this think hes gonna turn it around in a week (which would be needed to win anything) as he hasnt shown any promise at all this year dosent even know what team to play.
What a load of Shite!!! How has he never shown promise? You really are a wind up merchant or a complete Ass!!!

Out of 2 cup competitions before August. Statistically worst defence in Scotland.
Is that a surprise really after he signed so many forwards and midfeilders and so little defenders and let McManus go (i know it was GB) but even then i think he let the wrong one go i woulda kicked out James in a minute mainly for the amount of injurues he gets and McManus was much better than him last year anyway.

I was working, otherwise i would've been there cheering them on! You seem like an armchair fan, fair enough, but don't slag the team because you dont know much and you aren't there? Go and support some other team if you want to slag the team and gaffer off... people like you aren't welcome!

I thought McManus was crap last year and was finished.
Saints are struggling at the moment but we will come good.

Been a season ticket holder for 18 years and still have one today mate?
You?
I didn't go tonight for the reason that I would have ended up shouting at that shower, I'll be there on Saturday hoping for a win against Clyde.

too right the form is a surprise! I had been led to believe we were chasing promotion this season, which I assume is a team winning games. to get dumped out of cups from teams in our league and to only one game against our league opposition is really surprising!

Good for you. I've been a season ticket holder since I was 4... Been through the good times and the bad and I never get on their backs... Del's the man we will come good and think how close we've been because we've had average start...poor middle...good end. Well we're getting the bad games out now, hit a run of form and we're back in it. Dundee will have a dip, as will Partick, QoS etc. and Del will have the lads geered up to take advantage of the dips. They don't deliberatley go out to get beat!!!

But how many more seasons like this can this club and the fans take i know its not over yet but am not that positive as you may have guessed as not seeing many signds of improvement but i will give him a chance at the games as it is early but i am soooo disapointed at the start we are haven as we should be flying with the platyers we have.

I agree that we are in a poor state at the moment but the point I was trying to make was that this is when we need to get behind the team and support them!!
It's all too easy to call for the manager's head after 5 games - as it's been mentioned on many posts before now the vast majority were more than happy with Del as manager and his signings over the summer.
FFS - we've got plenty time to turn it around, let's get into Clyde on Saturday and just concentrate on getting that winning feeling back!!!

Why would you have ended up shouting at that shower as you put it. Do you know for a fact that they played badly? or do you just shout abuse at them irrespective.
If it was me you were talking to I didn't go tonight as the under 13's team that I manage were playing(won 10-1), other wise I would have been there SUPPORTING the team!!

any advances on 4????
Fair play, you've supported the team for a long time too then
However, as supporter of the club I an entitled to say what I like, Del has put his foot in his mouth recently saying that we will react to the results and form will improve- meanwhile we are out of another tournament.

how you work that out because i can see that we are in trouble.
imagine one of the old fim had this start then they would be in trouble and they have the same targets as us ( win the league) so i dont see how any team aiming to win the league end up in our position and cant be in trouble.

I respect you lot have opinions, but if fans are just critising the staff and players, and complaining about not value for money, either sell you season ticket or don't pay to get in? The team needs us now to help them hit the form to get us out of this league!

Is anyone really that bothered by this result?
I'd far rather take a clean shot at the league with no distractions.

I've seen this more times recently than I care to remember. Team plays poorly, manager faces criticism and fans start arguing among themselves about who are the 'real' fans.
it usually culminates with the manger getting the bullet.
I'll always support St Johnstone, and will always have a season ticket
Just because I am not cofident in Del's managerial capability doesn't mean that I shouldn't go to McDiarmid does it?
Theres nothing wrong with a bit of criticism, if I can accept people criticising me for saying that Del isn't up to the task of getting us to the SPL then folk can accept my right and need to criticise something that I am seriously pissed off with!
We are paying enough in wages to backroom staff and players to get to the top flight, however at this very early stage in the season it is becoming increasingly evident that the players have not been prepared for starting the season to a flyer.

At the end of the day does it really matter how long people have supported the club?!
We all support the same team and it's only natural people are concerned about the start we've had.
We need to get behind the team, whether it's at the game or not - there's no way teams like Partick & Dundee (sorry Jags Ya Bas) won't have a slump in form.
What we need to do is get the confidence back and this starts on Saturday against Clyde.
Looking at our squad it's by far the strongest in the division - I've no doubt that the players are as pissed off and frustrated as we are at the start we've had.

Ha! On a hiding to nothing there mate.
There is an aura of doom in this place whenever we per chance happen to lose a match. Three in a row and you can expect nuclear weapons. I hate to say this because I know from the average Saints' fan I meet on the street that this isn't the case, but judging by the posts on this forum I would easily mistake certain people in our support for Old Firm fans.
Some people on here really are ridiculous in their demands. No wonder we consistently fail to achieve promotion. Every season it is made into a matter of all or nothing and it puts a HELL of a lot of strain on the manager. And please, don't give me all the "that's management" shite.

Another defeat & out of another cup however you look at it. Hope they played well enough as the confidence will be shot for Saturday which is now a massive game.
Del must have thoght this management game was a piece of cake last season but I am sure he will be haveing a few sleepless nights at the moment.

Well that was fun!
Played pretty well in the first half!
Second half, We still can't defend for shit! Goal from a corner for their first. The ball dropped in between Anderson & McCaffery who stared at it while their man scored for their second!
Irvine & Hardie worryingly not for the first time stuck out as being pish poor tonight!
Thats just my opinion, I'm taking every game as it comes!
I am very worried about how things are going!

What Ali said! Much, much better from Saints tonight but very hard to win against 12 men. I've argued with Saints fans on P&B about refs in the past as I am usually seen to mark them too high but the guy tonight was disgraceful, which was a view clearly shared by the players as three of them were booked for dissent.
Unlike Mr Potter, I couldn't really pick out a failure. Some players weren't as good as others and could maybe be said to have a quiet game but no one was pish poor. Much better in the centre of defence, Morgan had a solid debut, as did McKoy. Liam Craig was back to nearer his usual self and Sammy put in his best shift so far.

I understand that both have been injured recently, don't be too harsh.
How did Morgan look? How did McKoy get on?
