First game of the season for me at long last so despite the doom and gloom of recent weeks I'm really looking forward to this. It's almost always a good game at Palmerston and it's probably my favourite ground in this league (not least because it's closest to my house).

Judging by recent reports I don't think the loss of McDonald and Savo is going to have a huge effect, especially as we might end-up playing with one up front again.

Having absolutely nothing to go on other than what I read here and the highlights on the Saints website I'm going to predict a 3-1 win for the mighty Saints. What say you regular attenders?

Another 2-1 win, with Holmes and Samuel banging them home.

I need to miss this game as I agreed to go to a wedding reception, and can't turn up plastered. I might still try and dodge it as it's going to cost a fair whack.

I've decided to go to Queens on Saturday, and call in with diarrhoea as my alibi for the reception. The lad got married in Crete last month so it's not as if it's a big deal.

I'll be in Dumfries for the Knochengorroch music festival and I was considering sneaking away just to watch the Saintees play queens.

After the diabolical hammering from a part-time third division side last night (reserves or no reserves) I'm starting to have my doubts.

Mon the saintees as always, and heres hoping that having Peaso and Savo out of the squad for a game gives Jacko some initiative to get out there and bang in a hat trick.

If thats your method of thinking then surely all our youth teams current form should more than make up for one poor reserve result??

Bit worried that this game will come too early for our rejuvenated troops. The wheels are back on the wagon but i fear a trip down to Palmerston is not what we need. However i remain positive for the sole reason that i think del will stick with his 4-5-1 and in fact i think he will name an unchanged starting line up with the exception of Alan Morgan who i believe is being recalled to the starting 11 with either Caff or Ando dropping to the bench to replace the suspended milne.
I'm going for 2-2 with Sammy and Swanks on the scoresheet!

Yes, i'm more than exstatic to know how well the youth teams are doing, their goal tallys are frankly wild. Just wish they had more games at McDiarmid so we could see the humpings.

But cmon, 3-0 against part timers, 2 divisions below us with half of our squad made up of first team players. I know it does no good moaning about it but c'mon, Cowdenbeath.

I still view Queens as our whipping boys from seasons gone by! For that reason nothing less than a 4-0 win will do, ok any kind of win would do!

With fatty upfront and skinny on the wing I think we can take them!

WE HAVE COLIN SAMUEL!

Our season started on Saturday and a good result is crucial to gain momentum ahead of the big one!

I recall us getting a 3-0 whipping at Palmerston recently and also escaping with a 3-3 draw after scoring 2 goals in the final minute. We played like a pub team in both games and they were not too long ago either.

That said, some team are in for a heluva beating from us soon, so I predict a walloping!

And for what reason do you believe that they will run out of steam?? They have a similar size of squad to ours and decent quality of squad aswell. They turned over dundee at dens today. On the face of it I agree but I was saying that about Hamilton last year up till about Christmas but they were a bit of a surprise package if you will, Dundee and Saints might have the supposed squads to keep ticking over but Livi are up there on merit, and if like Hamilton they stay major injury free and keep grinding out the results come Christmas you would expect a few loans to keep them there. Its very very hard to pull back 3 wins from anyone

Just back in from game. Disappointed too have lost two ppoints when I thought we had the game won. But on reflection 4 points from two difficult away games is more than good. Sammy was good upfront again. Midfield was back. But there remain doubts at the back. Andrew Jackson is a shadow of the last 12 months. We got lucky for the first goal an OG header. But that may be significant we have at last had a bit of luck. All in all I'll take the draw. C'mon saints

Oh forgot to mention thought the local polis were harsh with the visiting Saints fans. Big fancy dress parade and several cautions and people taken out, from half time onwards. They say they want a good family atmosphere at football - do they? Or do they want silence? In the main Saints fans were well behaved and supported their team.

Satisfied with the performance and result again. Hopefully the nightmare that was the middle of August is long forgotten. Well done to McInnes and Docherty for starting to turn things round. If we can get a win next week it'll have been a really good spell since the international break. Have to beware the wounded animal though.

McCarry One Nil
20-09-2008, 07:31 PM
Thought it was a crackin game today - after Dobbie missed a sitter in 1st minute I thought we took control without making any clear cut chances . Plenty fight and good attitude shown . Lost our way for the first 20 mins of the 2nd half and I have to assume Ando was injured as he's had a very good game . Ruti's mistimed tackle on wee Davie gave them the edge but we showed great character to come back and got the ONE break we got all day when Holmes header was nodded in by Thomson. 2nd goal was straight out of the Buck McCarry mould from Holmes after Hardies goalward header , holmes followed it up and there was only place the ball or any QOS defender was going - Queens threw caution to the wind and after yet another non free kick off Kean they got a throw i think and when the ball came over Main flapped it in the over crowded box bobbled about a bit and sneaked in eventually : ( Great penalty shout for Saints in injury time - definitely hand ball but ref gave us nothing (but grief) all game.

For me a heartening performance and if i had to name a MOM maybe give it to Liam who was much more like himself today.

Good game, thought Saints more or less ran the show in the first half, although Dobbie missed a 1 on 1 in the first minute.

Second half they brought on Davie W who ran from the half way line til Rusty chopped him down, Dobbie slots home. Lucky equaliser, the second was a bullet header from Hardie scrambled in by Holmes, shit equaliser from QOS, long throw think Main tried to punch it..made an arse of it and was tapped in.

Thought Hardie was back to his usual self and some poor bloke was flattened in the second half, had to see it to believe it funny as! Special mention to the guy who thought Saints had scored in the first half(stood up away to give it big licks only for the ball to go just past the post):oops:

After taking the 3 points at Dingwall last week, I would probably have settled for a point today before the game, but now it feels like 2 points dropped.

I've no doubt of Rustybitz' commitment to the cause but I do feel he causes us some unnecessary heart stopping moments at times, today being no exception.

And we were denied a stonewall penalty in injury-time!

And does anyone else think that Mr Conroy (ref) thinks 10 feet and 10 yards are the same distance?

Re the Polis. 50+ Jeanfield 208 Saints members were in fancy dress today and the female officer (and her male colleague) made a point of coming up and having a friendly chat to some of us before the game.

Indeed, during the match one officer came to check that the Pink Panther was still alive as the Polis had been watching him on CCTV and noticed that he hadn't moved a muscle for a wee while. Pink Panther explained to the officer that he was fine and had just been examining the inside of his eyelids.

Although the Lion was ejected from the ground after our second goal it was due to a member of the public having a power trip because he was given a day-glo jacket to wear for a couple of hours (probably for minimum wage?) and telling the polis that the aforementioned Lion had roared at him. As we all know, the Lion from The Wizard of Oz has no courage and couldn't possibly have roared at him but the officer told the Lion that she had no choice but to eject him because they had to be seen to be backing the Steward up.

The Lion was last seen chained in a cage and heading back to Perth on the back of a pick-up truck.

After the game, the aforementioned female officer came to our bus and told us that she doesn't like football but enjoyed the banter with us and wished us a safe journey home.

We've definitely had a lot worse craic than this with Polis at Saints games, particularly at McDiarmid Park.:|:|

Not with McLean in goals, he,s a fecking nightmare.

How I wish we could get a decent keeper. One that saves us 10 points a season rather than costs us 10.

Just in from the game, and the pub.... have to say i enjoyed my saturday night for the first time in a while(i missed dingwall) and thought it was a very good performance today from saints, apart from a wee scare at the start when tub of lard oops!! sorry dobbie should have scored but fu**** up !!! ha! ha! fanny!!!! we were the better team in the first half, and i thought martin hardie was back to his best, but all we had to show for our efforts at half time were a shit ref and a corner count far superiour to queens that if it had been a boxing match it would have been stoped.
They took an undeserved lead when second half sub davie reject weatherston went on a run from the half way line and was going nowhere but rusty bits tackle was deemed a pen by the previously mentioned ,sh*t ref. Lardy bollocks netted the pen, wan***.afterthat weatherston did f.a.We got back in the game when homer forced there defender to score for us and we were back in it .a bullet header from hardie was followed up by homer when there keeper seemed to fumble. Just as it looked like we wewre going to hold on alan main made an uncharacteristic fumble to give them what i thought on our second half display especially was an undserved point. Still four points from two hard games on the road, cant be bad and although slightly dissapointed that we couldnt hang on i thought it was a good all round performance from saints with special mention to martin hardie , colin samuel, chris millar and derek holmes who i thought were excellent today... saintees are back.. hello saintees are back............

Not with McLean in goals, he,s a fecking nightmare.

The poor boy's hardly put a glove wrong whilst playing in front of one of the worst defences we've ever had. Main on the other hand regulary costs us goals. The problem is main has built a reputation and it causes saints fans to forgive his mistakes too easily. I would prefer we stuck with McLean and looked to the future. Saints fans wont give anyone a chance who is not the messiah though.

Didn't post last night but thought it was a good performance against a decent Queens side. Defensively we looked not bad but struggled in the 2nd half to cope with the long throw-ins (Dear Del, why don't we try that for a change?) and Main's positioning cost us the 2nd goal.
Disagreed about Hardie - he looked slow for most of the game although the header in the build-up to our 2nd was a cracker.
Ref didn't help matters - Caff and Ruti were treated pretty harshly as Kean and Dobbie dived all over the shop while Thomson and Sives got away with harsher challenges on Sammy etc.
Oh aye and I agree with Soulful - Jacko is very poor just now. Shouldn't be starting games IMHO.

BTW What happened to Swankie yesterday - thought he'd be a likelier sub to have than Mooner who must still be lacking sharpness?

Mclean is a good keeper - still learning tho.

Alan Main is a "seasoned" pro and also makes mistakes.....I think this will be his last season with us and i also think we should be looking to bring in a 3rd experienced keeper.

Have to strongly disagree broon. Mains mistakes are very frustrating for a keeper who has done so much for us, however i believe for the future(Euan wasnt signed as a keeper for this season), McLean will be a better keeper after having over a year of training with Alan Main and building up some confidence by working with an experienced keeper day in day out and learning. Thrusting McLean into the first team spot light with this seasons obvious expectations would only be detrimental to his progress and ultimately the teams.

Just back from game - stayed the night in Dumfries (the Casia Mia restaurant superb!!). Enjoyed the second half f the game - especially after we went behind and McInnes was forced to abandon the stifling 4-5-1 formation and we went to 4-4-2. Cracking second half.

Very much agree with what 1884 says aboutthe police. I felt they - and in particular the female officer who was in front of the fancy dress fans - handled the saints fan with tact and good humour. Surprised that Soulful Saint thinks they were OTT. I thought they entered into the spirit of things and just wish I could say the same about our Tayside Polis.

Another good day out in Dumfries - we could have got 3 points, but a draw ok - lets face it we would have taken 4 points from the last 2 games in advance!

Roll on next Saturday...

I didn't see any 'undesirables' at the game, only the 307 Saints fans that made the journey down there for a good day out and to support Saints. We're all there for the same reasons, right?

But you're right, 1ofthe22. 'Vicky Pollard' did indeed throw Bob the Builder's hard hat onto the pitch, for which she had a warning and her details were written in the Officer's wee black book. Vicky is aware of the fact that she (he?) was lucky not to have been ejected. Well spotted.

Thought the tall female officer did her job well. Agreed. But you were to my right Spoonsy, what about the Saints fans further along the stand that were ejected for what appeared to me no good reason, are they lesser mortals? Queens should have saved themselves money and cut back on the stewarding, by 50%. Its over the top. When our second goal went in there was a rush of stewards to the Saints fans, summoned by the very female officer we have all praised. But for what purpose? It was clear there was neither danger nor trouble, apart from the vague frisson of a gate being opened by what appeared to be a large marsupial in fake fur. It was all in good fun and I'm surprised you think that ejecting people and arresting others is normal. Sick we didn't win tho it was there for the taking. Roll on next Saturday when I believe we are playing the marsupials with the fake bank balance. C'mon Saints

Just seen the highlights, looked like we played pretty well.

What the hell was Ruti thinking tho no need to dive in. God loves a trier but is a bloody liability 80% of the time. We could of just opened the gates and let wetherson run oot the park.

From what the Soulful one says there was obviously a lot more going on that I didn't realise at the time. I left the ground feeling that the police had dealt with everything in a good humoured way and let us express ourselves well. I wasn't aware of the problems to the left of us and it could be that they were dealt with by stewards rather than police? cant say as I didn't see that. Always sad to see fans being thrown out but, hey, we've got to strike a balance here. We love going to grounds like Palmerston: close to the pitch, tolerant policing etc. but if folk throw objects or open gates and run on to the track then action will be taken. If the club didn't take action then the SFL would?

I don't feel comfortable defending anything that supresses good natured enthusiastic celebrations mind you so I'll stop now after saying 2 things:

1. I always enjoy going to Palmerston - my favourite away ground

2. Thought the Tayside Police could do with seeing how you can go about your job in a good natured and reasonable way.

C'mon the Saints - if we win on Saturday that'll be 7 points out of 3 really hard games. Keep the faith!!!

Your hat, we paid for your haaaat, what a waste of council tax, we paid for your hat.

No one should get flung out a football game, unless they run the full length of the pitch or properly go for the away fans. People have had a drink and are having a giggle, it's hardly crime of the century. We're in the Polis' pockets nowadays, we pay our money and they dictate what we can or cannot do, aslong as they're in total control. Throwing the lion out was pathetic.

First game of the season for me and I was really expecting Saints to be shite given what I'd read on here but, for the most part, I thought we were pretty good.

Samuel worked hard all day, his pace looks like it could cause a lot of problems in this league (he still can't beat a man though). Millar was good and unlucky not to score in the first half although there seemed to be a bit of lack of communication between him and Irvine at times. I thought the back four all had good games in pretty tricky circumstances i.e. breath near Stewart Kean and it's a foul, the only real down point was the penalty where Irvine was posted missing and Rusty dived in when there was no need.

Jackson was probably the worst I've ever seen him, slow, out of touch and I'm surprised McInnes waited so long to make the change. Holmes looked good when he came on (a little slow perhaps but that never stopped Roddy) and really made the difference. Unlike a few others I thought Hardie was pretty poor for most of the game, he looks short of match fitness but his flattening of Neil McFarlane was just about worth the entrance fee.

The biggest disappointment for me was the failure to deal with the long throws. The second goal was always coming given the way we were defending them; why didn't we stick a man infront of the taker once in a while? Why were there always ten men back defending them? Why did Alan Main keep coming for balls he was never getting anywhere near? Mind you, one or two of them looked like foul throws to me, not that the ref would have noticed given that he always had his back to the taker.

Overall a point is probably a pretty good result in Dumfries (particularly when the ref gives you nothing all day) but it feels like 2 ponts lost especially as it was a pretty clear penalty at the end of the game (mind you they had a pretty good shout against Rusty too).

Roll on Scumdee.
