View Full Version : Andy Murray

Congratulations to Andy Murray for winning his first major title yesterday in San Jose and moving up to 47th in the World Rankings, 7 places behind Henman. What made the victory more special was that he beat Andy Roddick in the semis and then Lleyton Hewitt in the final.

I predict that he'll move above Henman in the rankings by the end of the year :)

Quality, always loved tennis

He's got to start flying the Saltire though before those Southerners latch onto him.

i think it is a rule that you are not allowed to have national symbols on there equipment but Murray had half of what can be seen to be the saltire on the back of his T-shirt. unfortunatly he wrapped a union jack around him when someone handed it to him at the end

I seem to remember one Forum member consistantly shooting Murray down in flames during Wimbledon last year saying that he was just a flash in the pan. Anyone admitting to some egg on the face???

For once the media appear to be getting the balance right between British/Scottish and they also seem to be saying dont expect Murray to win Wimbledon this year as its too soon and grass is far from his best surface. They must be learning at last!

I'll admit to some!

It's more to do with his arsey behaviour in interviews, the way he comes across puts me right off him. I admit he has done well but he's not there yet.

Tennis is a bit rubbish anyway, I find it very tedious to watch.

I think the guy's done brilliantly. The media come out and put all this pressure on him to succeed (like they did with Henman) and try to catch him out at interviews, but Murray wont have it. Well done to him.

born in Scotland, made in America/Spain. UK tennis coaching is awful and the funding is not there. Follow your dreams and they may come true, no matter what walk of life you are from, or what path you think is the right one - go for it :)

Wonder if he will win over the english press though :) that will be his toughest test. I guess he doesnt really care though, but would be good to get the nation behind him for the tournies.

I was dumbfounded when he won it. A Scotsman, who was favourite for the competition, and hyped up by everyone in the press...

And he won.

Eee, by gum that don't happen much round these parts.

Possibly the most Scottish response imaginable when he was interviewed after he won it, though.

"I'm not getting carried away, yet, I'm not ready to win Wimbledon" or words to that effect.

what is really strange is that tennis is not a team sport, and when it is , it's the bloody Davis Cup and the UK. It's like, not liking Tiger Wood because he plays against the UK/Euro team in the Ryder Cup. Who doesn't like Tiger ?

Murray plays for himself, not for Scotland, he doesn't play for the "Jersey", there is no Jersey. Yes he is a tennis player from Scotland and all Scots want him to win, but there is no Scotland v England thing going on here. Also, there are no Good English tennis players , ***......

Think the guiy walked off on his own to receive and allow murray to receive the ovations that both deserved.....

what was with the "interview" at the end for ? - that seems to be a first.

dont underestimate ferrero, if murray doesnt improve on his serving he will get whapped.

thought murray was poor last night, serving was way below par and made too many unforced errors. he was poor tactically aswell because he continually hit it to wawrinkas backhand and got punished alot of times, especially when murrays shot was short.

he will need to find the baseline more and serve better against ferrero if he is to win the match

Good luck andy, has the potential to be a hell of a player

Just back from travelling, and its amazing watching tennis with other nationalities, when a croatian watches a croatian they get right behind them, yet i met scottish guys who hate murray, find it stange why we tend to hate successful people, hes 3rd in the world and comes around 20ish miles from where we're from, people should all be behind him

Get the twat Murray out.

3rd in the World, young player, from just outside Perth.

Sure he isn't Mr.Personality when it comes to interviews but he is a great player and very exciting to watch. We should be backing local talent who do this well.

Plus, far more importantly, his girlfriend is absolutely stunning! Although maybe she just looks even hotter when sat beside Murray's mum!

In true Wimbledon form... COME ON ANDY!!!!

It's almost beginning to seem as if it could go his way. Roddick will be totally knackered and Murray's getting better and better.

Yeah, but its still going to be about how Murray copes with the power of Roddick, and his serve in particular. I reckon his ability to stick to his game plan will see him through again....fingers crossed anyway!

Against Wawrinka, he seemed to be unable to cope wit his "power", so I'd rather he'd faced Hewitt, to be honest. Still, how fan-bloody-tastic would it be if a Scotsman won Wimbledon before an Englishman? :D

Chansey
01-07-2009, 09:24 PM
Thats true, but some of the shots Hewitt manages to not only return, but return aggressively is staggering. IMO opinion Murray will have learned a lesson against Wawrinka. Roddick is a solid player, and all round a better player than Wawrinka, but apart from his serve doesn't have a weapon as lethal as Wawrinka's backhand.

In their own ways Hewitt and Roddick would both pose monumental challenges for Murray, but I feel Murray has more of a chance running Roddick into the ground than he would with Hewitt as Hewitt seems to have endless energy reserves available to him.

Agreed a Scot winning Wimbledon would be fantastic, and all the more sweeter with Henman's numerous failures still fresh in the memory of the British public.

Although Roddick will be tough, look at the head-to-head record i think murray will be ok.

Good to see jamie won today too

murray has too much for roddick, all roddick has is a serve, murray is 1 of the best returners in the game, only thing murray could possibly succumb to in this match is pressure and even then it is unlikely to happen

Roddick is much more than just a serve, he has been a consistanly great player for years now, and Murray will have to play very well to beat him

saintj
02-07-2009, 05:55 PM
consistantly great for years? since when? he went on the downslide after federer whapped him in 2 finals at wimbledon, heck, murray whapped him in his 1st/2nd year at wimbledon with ease.

murray should handle roddick better than he was able to handle wawrinka

murray wont ever likely have another run like this upto a slam semi and not face nadal/federer/djorkovic in the semi, if murray doesnt make the final with roddick putting him out then he will have blown it big time this year at wimbledon

Murray's in great shape and while Rooddick is also playing well, I think Murray will beat him once again and set up a great final against Federer

Yet another glorious failure by a Scot tipped to win a trophy..By god we are good at it. One positive thing though is that Murray has time on his side and may still be the man to shake the Wimbledon monkey of the UKs back.

He did look a bit out of sorts today but I think that that was simply because he was unable to boss the match.

Ronaldo

He'll be back!

Good tactics by Roddick but not really much in it. Andy has improved massively in the last year and if he does the same again then he'll be No. 1, not bad for a country with a few tennis courts. It would be great if we could get to the top 3 in the world at football but.

Yeah bad result for Murray, but when are the press and other people going to learn, not to put to much pressure on someone all the time.
Hopely one day Murray will go on and win wimbledon some day, but the more pressure that the press put on him, will make it much harder for him to do it.

He made it to the semis, forst Brit for god knows how long!! He then blew it big time and could not hit the simple shots for love nor money. He is too young still and needs to grow up a bit.

roddick deserved it no question, but,

for me murray hasnt been his best throughout the tournament, granted i missed the qf but i seen every other game and i dont think he has been his best, for me he has been over hyped and hasnt played aswell as what has been said in the news

i think throughout the tournament his shot selection has been poor in quite a few matches and if were not for his serve he wouldnt have made it this far.

roddick isnt a better player than murray and my opinion hasnt changed on him, he might be recovering his past form from when he won the us but he has alot of catching up to do

saintj
08-09-2009, 10:22 PM
that was round 4, hardly the 'business end'

that is the worst i have seen him play, probably ever, 29 unforced errors in the last set alone is disgraceful for someone who is supposed to be world no. 2.

Body Language was all wrong, he wont blame an injury but it did play a part in it. He was superb on Monday, you generally just dont dip like that when you have been performing at the top of your game for the whole hard court season
