What's the story here?
He was released and is now starting to build on his fitness, so has been training with us and we can play him in closed doors games etc, could we sign him?

The Perthshire Advertiser had a bit about it on the backpage yesterday.
But Kevin might have got the paper delivered late, i.e. today instead of yesterday!

This was in yesterday's PA... says he'll need to start looking for a club, but he is extrememly grateful to Saints and especially Owen who he describes as "Different Class"

He did quite well when he was in the side, but our defence is stong at the moment, would be good back up, but the question about his fitness still exists. I don't know if we are able to sign him or not though.... :?

No worries, Temple Of Saints website usually does a good resume of what's in the local papers each morning.

I'm not sure whether he's worth the risk, but he was a class player, so just wondered what the stupid bloody rules are this day in time as they change so often

His contract ran out before the end of the transfer window and he didn't get another club so anyone, including us, will be able to sign him. I personally don't see the point but he might be worth looking at again in the summer.

He's never really "left" Saints as he's been doing his rehab in the gym with Peaso and McCann and recently stepped up his training. Not sure if OC will offer him a deal til the end of the season as cover especially with Mensing suspended and Anderson still injured. Given that he's not signed for anyone, I would assume that there's nothing to stop us signing him again :?
Paston's back in the gym doing his rehab and his usual spells of random exercise between bouts of watching tv

Paterson was brilliant before his injury at Dens. He was so composed and could pass the ball brilliantly out of the defence. Reminded me of Kerny.
If it was possible I would take him back but I suppose with his injury track record it's always a risk.
Why not offer him a pay as you play deal?

i love this guy when he was at partick everytime i saw him he was outstanding and out played everyone on the pitch.
sure he was amazing going forward to!
one of those guys that was full of passion for his club.
Only saw him once for saints in the completly pish match against hamilton in the challange cup. but from what i know i hink he would be a good player when fully fit

or monthly contracts ,
If he's required, I'm sure he'll be more than happy to sign a contract with us allowing him to play.
FWIW, I thought he was super in the few games he played for us... and would certainly welcome him back again if Owen believes him to be fit enough

Was excellent in the few games he played. Managed to sort out the defence. Every one relied on him and he did not let them down.
Would be excellent if we could sign him pay per game.

What's the point? GB now applies the 'pay-as-you-view rule' to most injury prone players when they sit in the stand. For Saints to move forward we need regulars in defence, especially as there is a significant chance we won't make promotion. To have a player, albeit one who may be better than we've got, for a few games then run a significant risk of that player getting crocked again doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense. We need a regular back four, it's what teams win promotion with, not messing around with key positions.
Paterson won't win us promotion, the only way I'd like to see him sign if is he has a solid coaching background/ good ideas, then maybe we could have him as a registered player for emergencies (and presuming he hasn't severed his leg whilst showering).
I may be accused of being pessimistic, but I'm assuming Saints are planning for next season in the 1st already. Paterson shouldn't be part of that plan.

I see what you are saying Colonol, but on the the otherhand, what if he shakes this off and becomes injury free for a few seasons and is cracking... I reckon he's worth another punt if we could tie him down on a pay-as-you-play contract.

Said it before, but he was (and probably still is) the only centre back we have with the ability to get the ball down and play. In my opinion when he was in the side albeit only 4-5 matches we adopted a much more studied game. Definately worth a punt.

I see what you are all trying to say and i know that Paterson is a good player, but why would we release him then sign him again a few moths later?

injury free he might turn out to be a key player for us , or at least an important squad member

Haven't we had enough of these types of players? Quality, but... I would've thought our experience with 'crocked' players has shown that very few actually make an impact. Saints need a regular side, not one with potential star players who may miss 30 games a season. Nothing against the guy, but we need to build a team, not a squad resembling a casualty ward.

I think Paterson's a really good defender but I don't see any point in even considering signing him. To be honest, I was shocked when we signed him in the first place because he'd been out for donks before he came here (ditto John Henry) and Geoff Brown had only recently said very publicly that the club had learned its lesson about signing injury-prone players after being stung in the past.
It is obvious though, that if we're going to be playing 3 central defenders we're going to need to sign someone new to add some extra competition/cover for that area - that's why I personally think we were hasty in letting Mark Campbell go. He was contracted here anyway, he's fit at the moment, and considering we didn't bring in a new defender to replace him during the transfer window I think it would have made sense to hold onto him at least until the summer. As it is, he probably would have been back in the team on Saturday, and it would have given him another chance to prove himself at the club.
People will probably disagree with me on this, but if we're to look for a defender during the summer (and we're still in the First Division), I'd still quite like us to go back in for Grant Murray. He's far too good to be playing in the 2nd, and he can play in three positions that we'll always need cover in - right-back, central defence and defensive midfield. I was always very impressed by him when he was a Saints player - he was a very reliable player. I know people will say he was poor for Partick against us, but he was in a shite team and Partick players tend to do badly against Saints by default!

BH, you talk sense 95% of the time and I usually agree with much of what you say. You tend to make a good case for your points, backing them up with solid evidence. Occasionally though, as in this case, you come out with uncharacteristic shite.

Don't you think Murray was a good player for us then? I thought he was excellent for us - easily our player of the year in our first season down, and one of the few who was good in the year before that when we were relegated. I don't see how anyone who watched Saints regularly during that period could fail to appreciate how solid and versatile he was for us.
I'm not really bothered what Thistle fans say about him because I've seen enough of him to form my own opinion. If he's rubbish for them, it's probably because Thistle in general are rubbish and everything that touches them turns to shite. It's like a reverse-Midas effect. Thistle fans probably think he's not good enough for them because they live on Cloud Cuckoo Land, where they genuinely believe that Thistle are some sort of big club who should be attracting sensational players - whereas, in actual fact, they're pony, and they always have been.

I accept he was ok, but no more than that, in our first season down, but the year before I thought he was simply a passenger. I remember one particular game against Motherwell in the season we were relegated which typified his contribution. We lost the game, but played quite well, apart from Murray who did absolutely nothing. He played on the left that day and ran about between the 18 yd box and the half way line a bit but never touched the ball. He didn't make horrendous errors or anything like that, but I just couldn't believe how little he offered.
Anytime I saw him play for Thistle at right full back he was pretty bad, both in the year he played for them in the SPL and in their descent to Div 2. I believe he was a particular target for their fans venom last season. I've no idea how well, or otherwise he has played this year, but I don't want him at McDiarmid.
I have nothing in particular against the guy, but he inspires nothing in me other than sleep.

Grant Murray was certainly one of our better players in the relegation season, and the first season down, but I think that was more to do with the lack of talent in the side, rather than him being exceptional.
I will admit to voting for Grant Murray as player of the year on both those years, but I doubt I would welcome him back now. IMO, we have better players at the club now and should be looking better than Murray.

That's strange - I thought in our first season down we had a better squad than we do at the moment. Funny how these things go, isn't it! :P
