Oh what fun! Our own little space at last.
If anyone has been to good bars, reataurants, venues or indeed has found bargains, freebies and the like, use this thread.....................par example, Mathers in Broughton Street=good bar............All Bar One, George Street=bad bar.
Cheap tobacco to be found in Rapido, Broughton Street, £2.50 for a wee pack of Drum, cheap as chips-unlike their chips.
Many thanks,
jc

.................oh aye, if you get membership at the casino on York Place ('tis free), it is very, very cheap and open till 6am. Cheese and ham toastie, £1.20 please. Get a discount card in Pivo and you will get 33% off all drinks (22% at weekends) thus a Guiness would cost you £2.12 please:).

If you're looking for a good place to go with a lady friend, i'd suggest trying The Grape at the corner of George St and St Andrews Sq.

It's a beautiful building inside with a nice chilled out atmosphere

Its always pretty quiet, last time i was there was mid-festival on a Saturday night and they were doing 2-for-1 drinks until 9pm! ON A SATURDAY! not only that but they had staff walking round with trays of finger food and you got a free glass of bubbly on the way in!

I don't know if that was a one off or if it happens every weekend!

The Globe on Niddrie Street, just off the Royal Mile usually has cheap beer on the go. Either 2 4 1 or bottles for a £1 or something along those lines. Its also great for watching sport as its covered in TVs with a couple of big screens

For the best Indian curry in Edinburgh you must try Ignite in Morrison St ,it is superb and better than the cavalry club.

Best Thai - Dusit in Thistle St.
Best Japanese - Koi up on Teviot Row
Best Curry - for me it's still the Omar Khayyam @ Haymarket

Good restaurant for a special meal is the New Bell on Causewayside - we were there in May and had a really nice meal.

Try here for great Turkish food and brilliant service but you need to book beforehand. There is a pub opposite called Drouthy Neebors (???) where you can while away the waiting time and when your table is ready they come and get you.

If your on an all nighter and want to carry on boozing after the clubs shut, pay a wee visit to the casino at fountain park, Drinking till 6am.

Then, if your not done yet. Head to the Scotsman Bar at the top of the cockburn street. It's a posties bar and opens at around 6am.

Scotsman Lounge isn't a posties' bar, you're thinking of the Penny Black (opens at 5 a.m.) The Scotsman was the bar for the printmen coming off the night shift from the Scotsman printing works when they were still based where the Scotsman hotel is now. Clue's in the name really

That's a myth, I went a couple of years back during the festival after leaving Faith at 5am and the Penny Black was still shut at half 6 when i got my train back to Livingston! Snax next door opens around 6ish though so you can sit outside with a bacon roll if you like!

Run by Swedes. Staffed by Swedes (although not solely by Swedes).
Very nice, friendly, arty bars. The more pleasing on the eye female clientele drinks there......not bars for the screaming radge, the soft furnishings, candles and lack of tellys tends to put them off.
A good origami night is to be had in Sofi's, and the moose pizza is awfy gid.

Ah, Mr. Bear, a man after my own heart. The Boundary Bar is now City Limits (not as good). Slammers is now a yuppy-fied bar called the compass- booooo! However, the Annfield is still there. Not on Granton Road mind, in Newhaven. I think the Bowler's Rest is still kicking about-literally.

And then, of course, there is the delights of Great Junction Street. Minto's (sadly now closed) very "lively". The Tam O'Shanter-nice if you are looking for a "Bobby Moore", or The Marksman-if you want to be stabbed or shot.

Noticed that a fortnight ago - surely that must be a nice wee earner? It's usually stowed on match days and that would be your bread and butter along with rugby internationals and other Murrayfield stuff (e.g. the Rugby League and the Heineken cup final this year). 3D games are available at football grounds the length and breadth of the British Isles every week, or so I'm lead to believe.
3D football on tv has the distinct whiff of computer geek nerdom. Ideal for the Premiership then.

Nope, it is generally moribund bar friday nights, saturdays, and fitba.
Lacks character, personality and the ability to spot schemy radges a mile off. As soon as karaoke is employed as an vehicle for entertainment in a boozer, alarm bells start ding-a-linging.

Correct.
However, back in the day Mathers was always a self policing pub and hopefully the new management will wise up to it. £2.95 a pint helps keep the undesirables away too. A little local knowledge goes along way in the licensing trade.
Having said that I watched the Arsenal/Barcelona game there on Wednesday evening and it was a great night. Lots of nice folk and the IPA didn't go off!!

If you like stereotypical Italian waiters who are so falsely happy and chirpy that they automatically think they deserve a big tip!!

They often deserve a big smack in the mouth :)

To be honest, you are spoilt for choice down that end of town. Lots of options in Broughton Street and in the Omni Centre-Chinese buffet and Tapas places are okay...just okay though...depends on what you are looking for. The fact that you are going to a Saturday matinee suggests that maybe you are taking kids...I know mine think a Chinese Buffet is really exciting...if they are a bit older, then trying some Tapas might be a bit new for them and they can try different stuff

Hoodlum if you like Thai the "Phuket Pavillion " is first class. I am booked for there when I go back to WWRY soon.As has been stated there is so much choice in that area with no real bad ones just some better ones.

Hoodlum la favorita is gd, half way down leith walk, kids eat for free before 6, pay a pound to a charity, food is good too. La favorita is Vittoria's pizza restaurant. Different premisis but pizzas are pretty much the same. Tony's been in business a long time and turns out good quality stuff. The Vittoria also do the kids for a quid deal.
