The mighty Sydney FC this afternoon won the inaugral "A" league final in front of a capacity house crowd of 44 000 fans, 1 - 0 against the Central Coast Mariners.
The mariners totally dominated the first half and had the sydney boys on the back foot for the entire half, in fact sydney only managed one shot on goal in the first half.
The half time was a god send for the boys in blue as we were able to regroup, on the other hand the mariners didnt need the break and were very unlucky to be going in at nil nil.
The second half was a different story and the Sydney boys dominated, well namely Dwight Yorke did, and he took control of the midfield and was a class above everyone else on the field, he made quite a few telling runs which had the defenders twisting and turning.
The goal came when a typical Yorke run saw him hold off 4 defenders in a 30 meter run and a nice square ball for Steve Corica to blast it into the net, from there it was a very open affair as the mariners pushed forward for a equaliser and the FC boys looking for the second to kill the game off.
In the end it was a great game played with good attacking and strong defending.
Dwight Yorke was named the offical man of the match.
For it's debut year The "A" League was an outstanding success. Last week's semi final played host to the one millionth spectator through the gates, with the average home attandence a tick over 10,000 per game.
Australian football is now heading in the right direction, a strong debut for its new domestic legaue, qualification for the up coming world cup, and now Asian game's qualifying matches to look forward to as quality football is now heading to our shores.
They say you need to learn to walk before you run, and Football Australia has taken it's first baby steps.
Lets hope season number 2 is as good as this one.
