View Full Version : We Are Perth?

Have I missed something? Why is this the title of the new forum? Should it not be something like ' We Are Perth Saints'?

Sorry to be pedantic but the new title doesn't seem to make any sense as the title of a St Johnstone fans Forum, official or otherwise!

How does "that was the best name we could think of" sound? We needed a domain name as soon as possible and most of the decent names are already registered. To be honest I don't think the name matters much, the forum hasn't changed at all.

I am no technical expert but I think the name is important from the point of view of people being able to find the site. I had to go on to the Temple to get the link as putting in a search on Google for ' St Johnstone chat'or 'Saints chat' on Google did not throw up the site.

If you are happy just to have the same people as usual visiting the site there is probably no problem but otherwise I suspect you would need to get either St Johnstone or saints in the name. No doubt someone in double quick time will tell me if I'm wrong!

If I am right in saying it just needs a bit of code put in behind the scenes to tell Yahoo or Google or whatever to bring up 'we are perth' as one of the links if someone types in St Johnstone, or saints chat etc

That's because it's a new site and has only been online for a week. I'm sure the site will appear on Google eventually.

Shaggy Jenkins is correct - all it takes is for us to insert a couple of things behind the scenes and we should eventually appear for searches of st Johnstone or Saints in the search engines - it all takes times though and we're not quite done with everything yet!

Plenty of sites don't necessarily have the team names in them - see blackandwhitearmy (St Mirren) or overthebridge (Ross County) for a couple of examples!

The site is always very democratic and users views are more often than not taken into account.

I appreciate that everyone is doing this in their spare time and that what I am about to suggest would involve some extra time.

However, I wonder whether some potential names could be thought of which have not been taken by any other site and then a vote taken of users of which is thought the best.

I appreciate how ' We are Perth ' came about but it is hardly inspiring! Would it be possible in the fullness of time to consider a name change?

Any suggestions are more than welcome, as are any donations to pay for another domain name!"

I suppose it would be possible but is there really any point? I wouldn't be opposed to a change if that is what forum users want and as long as a new name was an improvement. Do we really need to though, is there any real point? The previous incarnation was called "Saints Chat", was that any more inspiring for you? I didn't think that was a great name but it wasn't a great issue.

The forum has been through several upheavals over the last year and I think the main aim should be for some stability, but if a clear majority want another change then that's fair enough, the forum members should obviously have the decision.

It's surely not a big issue, is it?

I don't think it's a big issue Dev, and we had exactly the same threads started when 'SaintsChat' came into being last year. As regards people finding the site, right until the last day of SaintsChat, more than half the visitors arrived via links from either BlueHeaven or the Temple. Old habits die hard.

However yourself and Jamie have put in the time, effort and money to keep the forum going, I think everyone should be grateful and leave these choices to you. If anyone doesn't like it, they can start their own forum, quite frankly!

Surely an organisation's name is its most important indicator of what it is all about? What relevance to St Johnstone is the current name? Perhaps the local tourist board can start an interesting thread about sculptures or Branklin Gardens?

However, from the replies I accept that I am obviously in a minority (possibly of one!) and I do take into account the time and expense gone to of those who set this up for the benefit of everyone else. A genuine well done (but it is still a c##p name!).

You might think that, but you should try and come up with a suitable, affordable alternative.

Before the forum moved last year, I tried to rescue 'stjohnstone.com' and 'stjohnstone.net', which housed the first real online forum before porn barons managed to nick the domain. The deluded people who currently own (yet don't use) it, think it's worth a four-figure sum.

We also looked into getting these domain names back when we were deciding where to put the forum and sent emails to the people who currently have these domains. Naturally once we found out just how much they were demanding we had to look elsewhere.

Four figures!!! they at least offered it back to me for a few hundred - still too much mind. Stjohnstone.com was vacant as i let the name go about a year back.

On a side note, and sorry for not using the PM function, but i still have the name perthsaints.co.uk which i currently use only for email and have no plans whatsoever to use for a website.... so if you want to use that name for the forum then im quite happy for it to be used.
