Oasis sung this song and it's got me thinking.

Is this just one point? Directly the other side of the world? (Somewhere in Australia for Perth I would guess?) Or can it be a variety of places? I cannot get my head around it...

Help...

Bored Kev?

It's numerous points (probably an infinite number). If you take 'half a world away' as being half the diameter of the Earth (7926.41 miles fact fans) then half the world away is any point this distance (3963.205 miles) from Perth in any direction.

Not now Old Cheeso! That's great news... can people then please add what is their favourite place that's exactly half a world away from their home...

Cheesy, what are some of our options, preferably on dry land!

To aid in this most interesting of searches, can you tell me (and therefore others) a handy website for working out what is this distance away from your home. Is the exact other side of the world in Australia from Perth. It is on my squeezy stress-ball in the office, though I realise that is not entirely scientific!

No idea, just trying to figure out how to do it, Google Earth might be worth a punt.

Another method of finding somewhere half a world away would be to pick a point (Perth) and turn the globe by 180 degrees, that point will also be half a world away.

As I say, my squeezy stress-ball globe is not a great way of starting this!

I don't subscribe to Google.earth, so cannot get this info but it can be done... anyone here a subscriber?

It's free isn't it? Don't you just have to download one free bit of software?

I'm 37.

of course, half a world away could also be some point above the earth, in the atmosphere.
Another issue, half a world away from you is going to be a different point to half a world away from me!
Given the above, oasis were talking a pile of poo!! :P :***:

on a planet with finite space there cannot be a infinite number of places half a world away.

there will be a few though, I'll give you that

You're probably correct but if you define your point as small enough then you will get up into the realms of many billions of possible answers.

I think you can have an infinite number of points on a finite surface - start with one point, and then the next point is 1/2 cm away, the next is 1/3 cm away, the next is 1/4 cm away and so on and you get 1/infinity cm away.

A point is infinitely small (i.e. has no surface area), isn't it?

What we need is a mathematician who is as pedantic as Dev :)

So what is exactly the other side of the world from Perth?

So what is exactly the other side of the world from Perth?

I think it is actually the Pacific Ocean - this might help but I don't have the time myself to work it out exactly...

Cheers, Phil!

New Zealand looks a nice place and it's the place I'd most like to visit one day...

Good that Perthshire and New Zealand are almost opposite as they must be two of the nicest places in the world!
