Time to move on for me. Queens up next and there must be a real worry that this might be the game when the unbeaten run comes to an end. With our performance today and their 4-0 drubbing of Airdrie there are signs that it could go wrong.
Well I,m not worried.....An away win, 2-1 Saints..We can only get better and we are well overdue a decent performance. I will be making the long journey to Dumfries full of hope, bouyed by the fact that even though we were very poor against Livi , we STILL won the Match and collected another valuable 3 points in our quest for league glory. Everyone wants to beat us and this actually might just be helping us.. Team wise with todays match fresh in my mind , I'd like to see something like......
Main
Irvine, Rusty, Caff, Craig.
Milar, Morris, Sheerin, Sammy
Savo, Holmes
Subs..McLean, Peaso, Gartland, Hardie, Mooner.
Injured..Jacko, James,
No place for Ando, Swankie....

It's not going to happen but i would go with this:
Main
Irvine Rusty Caff Ando
Samuel Morris Hardie Craig
Peaso Milne
Subs: Mclean, Gartland, Millar, Swankie, Holmes
We are struggling to put the ball in the net at the moment and Peaso is the most natural finisher at the club. Dont know if Hardie will be fit enough to start but i'd like to see him back in the middle, he's been off form this season but we've definitely missed the big man recently. Craig is wasted at left back and Gartland is a CB so Ando would be the man for left back in my opinion. Holmer needs a rest. And based on todays performance there is no way Millar or Swankie can start. Samuel deserves a chance after his impact recently, especially on either wing.

Not confident at all for this. I'd put Craig back into midfield with Garters or Ando at left-back. Sammy to start up front with Homer - he looked sharper yesterday. Not sure I'd even have Swankie on the bench either - time for Mooner to make an impact?

Strong hints from McDiarmid that Craig will not be left back on Saturday.

Massive game, I can't wait for this. Yesterday, our luck continued and we were outplayed in the first half and were lucky not to go in 2 or 3 behind. I think we should play a 4-5-1 at Palmerston, and try to counter attack them.
Main
Irvine Anderson McCaffrey Rutkiewicz
Samuel Millar Morris Moon Craig
Holmes
McLean, Gartland, Sheerin, Swankie/Peaso, Savo.
Didn't think Sheerin played to well yesterday, and I think this is the sort of game Moon will do well in as we will need 100% work rate in the midfield when they have the ball, and then composure and the ability to keep the ball when we attack. Millar was pish in Dingwall, but was back to near his best yesterday. Morris was good as usual.
When we attack it'll be more like a 4-3-3, with Samuel and Craig supporting Homer, or if he flicks the ball down for either Millar/Morris/Moon to run onto, which could be another way for us to score.
I'm going for 2-1 Saints, it's time we start winning these big games and wrap up the league before Easter.

[QUOTE=Alan Main FanClub;188235]Millar was pish in Dingwall, but was back to near his best yesterday.QUOTE]
If that was the best Millar has got then he shouldnt be anywhere near the squad. Everyone keeps saying he was so good second half yesterday but to be honest all he did was the "pass" to samuel for the goal.
The first 1/4 of the season Millar was without a doubt our best player but he has been hopeless since then, including the Livi game yesterday. I read a morton fan on pie and bovril saying he needed dropped every 10 games or so and that Morton fan has been proved absolutely 100% correct. Get him out the team for a game or two and hopefully we'll see the Chris Millar from the start of the season. Or perhaps he looked good because everyone else was so poor!?

Gonnae be a very difficult game an a draw wouldnae be to bad a result. To get a win i think we need tae go wi pace upfront an keep the ball on the deck, so for me that means homer benched an possibly sammy up there gettin in behind their central defenders who aint that quick
Radford 72
16-02-2009, 06:34 PM
I'd be looking at Ando for the left back slot as well, assuming that we don't, by some miracle, finally land a left back on loan (as reported, unsurprisingly, in today's Evening Telegraph). The temptation might be there though to also revert back to a 3-5-2 as they are sure to play two up front, unlike County. Extra man in midfield wouldn't go amiss either. I still don't like the formation but it has it's merits at some away venues if we continue without a natural left back.
Playing them at just the wrong time though and they seem to have improved massively since Chisholm restored Dobbie and O'Connor to the starting XI and got Scally and Harris back from injury to play alongside new signings McCann and Lancaster.
We need to get back to winning ways on the road but I'd definitely take a point from Saturday if offered right now. Hope we take a good support down as I thought 2,700 was a disappointing crowd on Saturday.

This could be our hardest game of the season as its the first time we have actually played a team on form. I dont think we have too much to fear though as we have better players all over the pitch. It was only a few weeks ago that livi humped them 2-0 and Dundee went down to Dumfries on a bad run and came away with 3 points. The only player I fear to a degree is Dobbie with the old revenge factor spurring him on but we have kept him quiet every other time.
Think the game comes too early for Hardie as it hard to justify sticking him in ahead of Morris, Millar, Moon or Sheerin which is a shame because we need the big man at the moment but his lack of matches is holding him back but hopefully with the weather improving he'll get some reserve matches. I think its vital that Homer and Samuel start and we need energy in the midfield for this one.

They seem to have returned to form since Dobbie came back into team. QoS fans on p&b have been saying for weeks that be should be in the team. Looks like they were right. Sure there are other reasons for their return to form,as in new players coming in & others coming back from injury.
Think we should go looking for a win but happy if it ends in a draw.
Team picks itself with Sammy replacing Swankie with McLean, Ando, Moon,Hardie, Swankie on the bench.

I disagree. The game at EEP where we went top of the league was against Dunfermline, who had very similar form to ourselves at the time. The team stepped up to the mark, and delivered 3 points. We should be expecting them to do the same again this time against a team who, on paper, we should totally outclass.
Should is a dangerous word to use in reference to St Johnstone, though.

I felt disappointed we only drew at Palmerston last time out, we dominated, scored two had a stone-wall penalty turned down and then conceded a stupid late goal due to a goalkeeping error. I'd take 2-2 again but think we can win. I was more nervous about Morton away strangely enough

Not really.
About a half of their team are players we deemed "not good enough". Dobbie being the prime example. Although we shouldn't assume we'll beat every team, as I admit to often being guilty of, I'd rather have Rusty than Thomson or Main instead of Robinson, any day of the week.
I think we'll draw, though. Queens are coming back onto form, but we are very, very hard to beat.

Are you suggesting that he's fit enough to play for 90 minutes, but not match fit or are you suggesting he couldn't last 90 minutes?
Irrespective, I don't think he should be on the bench. Savo clearly wasn't at the races on Saturday and shouldn't have been on the bench. He did let us down, rather his manager let Savo down. Who knows, had Peaso been the subbie striker, perhaps he would have scored and presented Del with a real dilema for Saturday.

Hi all.
There doesn't seem to be that much excitment/intrest for the game on sat on the board. Its a crucial and v hard game for us, and we need as many saintees there as possible to spur the players on.
The team needs all the backing as possible & we'll have to be behind them from the start- if they make a mistake, so what??? Get behind them all.
Also Palmerston is usually a hard place for us to come back with points so we need as many of us there as possible. The players will really apperciate seeing a large away support there (eg East end park last year) and may spur the team onto having a good game.
Apart from that We're only 1 game away from matching our record which will be a great achievment-we're probably nt going to see saints go 19 games undefeated in our lives again(well we might).
So if you can make the game but your still undecided, be there on sat, cheers.

You'd have to guess Byrne will come straight into the side on Saturday but I actually think 3-5-2 could have suited us quite well down there, with Ruti, Caff and Gartland across the back and Irvine, Millar, Morris, Sheerin and Craig in midfield.
As it is, I'd guess the team will more likely be:
Main
Irvine - Rutkiewicz - McCaffrey - Byrne
Millar - Morris - Craig/Sheerin - Craig/Sheerin
Milne/Samuel - Holmes
Subbies: McLean, Gartland (although really it should be Ando since he's more versatile), Hardie, Milne/Samuel, Moon/MacDonald.

They have had a couple of decent results recently but the league doesn't lie - we are the better team, so we're going down there expecting to bring back the 3 points."

Is this the "Biggest Game Of The Season" ???
I certainly think so, Queens have been rank rotten in the last few months but a recent revival of of a couple wins and a draw in the last 3 games after a run of 10 games without a win. More notably they beat Dunfermline at EEP.
I believe Del has great confidence in the team and I'm sure we will be tight at the back again and come home with the 3 points.

A 'home' game for me and the first chance I've had to see Saints since the Clyde game in December. I'd like to see Saints getting back to the way we were playing at the start of this unbeaten run when we were moving the ball through midfield much quicker than the last couple of times I've seen Saints and I hope moving Craig back to midfield will be the catalyst for that.
We were very unlucky not to win last time out a Palmerston and given the almost polar opposite fortunes of the teams since then I think we've got to be confident of getting a win but a draw would still be a good result.

Heard that Caff will not be starting and Gartland will be in centre of defence with Ruti (to combat o'connor's aerial ability).... Caff is not injured......... Thoughts if this sounds plausible or not??

just someone who has seen the team training this week. Cant believe it myself as Caff & Ruti have been tremendous over the past few months.
Would be disappointed myself if it was the case. Suppose "one" last week did cause us a few problems at the back especially in first half..
Anyway, great believer if it aint broken, why fix it...

FFS, is it just me?? Del on the offical site yet again telling us how hard the next game will be... How about a bit of different psychology for a change, like:
"We're top of the league, 18 games unbeaten home and away - they're in the bottom six, 12 points off the pace and we also have a game in hand. They have had a couple of decent results recently but the league doesn't lie - we are the better team, so we're going down there expecting to bring back the 3 points."
We treat other teams with too much respect.
The term 'avoidance of defeat' is being used more and more frequently on the official website.
I hate that term.

I'd have thought it's unlikely. He's so cautious when we're away. If Garters was gonna take Caff's place, I'd have expected it against Rangers, no pressure in that game.
Given Byrne is new, it's a bigger gamble...

I would think this is bound to be a hard game, it always is and the fact that they seemed to have returned to a bit of form in their last three games. They should finish mid table. If they can beat Dunfermline at Dunfermline 2-0 and gub Airdrie 4-0 last week, which we haven't done, then they are now in form.
------------------------ Main -----------------------
Irvine ------- Ruti ------------ Caff -------- Craig

End to end stuff with Saints taking a grip and wearing them down. An early goal would be much appreciated. Saints to win and another 3 points closer hopefully..

guys, guys, guys and gals. We are atop the league. If we win, we win, if we lose, we lose. All worrying and conjecture here isn't going to make a h'worth of difference tomorrow - so let's just all send +ve vibes to the boys and hope they pick our nice cuddly thoughts up and go do the business - AGAIN! Tomorrow we will still be top of the league.
