I know this has been done on the many incarnations of the site before, but what are the best sites for free music downloads?

Just be VERY careful with these sites. They are being monitored through your IP address and one day you will get a bill, or a summons for illegal trading in copyrighted music! There have already been some high profile cases where fokl in the UK have been fined GBP10,000 and been ordered to pay for the music. Nothing is ever free........

I can verify this is true. I got 'caught' two years ago using Shareaza (Bittorrent) to download a film, which turned out to be a corrupt copy anyway.

As it happens, they were more lenient in those days and simply sent a legal document forbidding me from doing it again. The lawyers basically monitored my IP address, as Kevin said, they then sent the document to my ISP, who passed it on to me. I had to change ISP as well, since I'd broken their usage agreement.

Always bought music off the net ever since, there are many places it can be bought legally at a low cost. Shop around!

If you want music you should pay for it. Either that or make your own!

If you are downloading music just make sure you are not uploading any.

I prefer to download music legally and regularly use iTunes, it's very easy to use. I have now legally downloaded almost 250 tracks from it.

I'm 37.

i hate downloading music im one of these sad people that likes to have the cd with artwork - i will not start paying to download what i could buy as a cd.
i will never use itunes either.

they only thing i would go on a downloading service for would be to hear smaples of songs to see if their good.

The kinda music i am into never gets anywhere in the charts anyway so most of the bands release free downloads from their sites or sites like myspace.com which is really good for finding new music.

In the past i have used limewire just for downloading rare songs, b sides and checking out a few bands. only ever downloaded one full album and it just does not feel right.

if they ever stop the manufacture of cds i will cry a lot.
