Gutted to see that he has passed away.
One of the true greats of Scottish football irrespective of which team you follow. Old enough to remember some of the great black and white European matches with him being knocked down time after time, just getting up again, socks around his ankles and tormenting defenders in a way that no modern players appear able to do

Was this through his Motor Neurone Disease?
Aye it was.
A fantastic wee player, anyone who has not seen the Jinky story on dvd should watch it, fantastic.

I am sure John you would have as I did have the pleasure or perhaps the pain of watching him play. A great player and a character too.

Within a few months I find that two of my favourite players of all time and childhood heroes have gone forever..
Jimmy Johnstone was genuinely phenomenal.
At Muirton Park there were two sections on either side of the tunnel, on the one side the pipe band congregated and the other side where those on call got season tickets. I attended the latter because my dad was an engineer with the Hydro Electric Board as it was then. I used to stick my hand out as the players were running on and were coming off at the end. On one occasion Jimmy came up to me smiling widely and sweating, ruffled my hair and said 'who's your team eh?' and I said 'Saints'. He said 'You're a St.Johnstone man eh', signed the programme and said 'how'z that wee man?' and left me with this overall impression of a very warm personality., I was called 'wee man' by the 'wee man'.
He was an awesome player, unbelievable balance, could turn on a sixpence, then accelerated leaving players for dead, went inside then outside, taunted opponents like a matador to a bull and did what seems all too often so difficult nowadays created large holes in defensive systems all by himself.
R.I.P. Jinky, the big wee man.

They dont make scottish footballers like him anymore
Even a *** at work admitted that he was close to the greatest scottish footballer of all time.

He was the only reason Kenny Aird did not play for Scotland.
My only claim to fame is that I played football with Jimmy when I was about 14................................................ on a beach in Spain. His skill was sublime even in bare feet.
RIP
