Anyone seen anything good at the cinema or made any good DVD purchases lately?
I went to the cinema this weekend to see Lucky Number Slevin and quite enjoyed it. It wasn't the best film ever made and probably didn't exactly move the genre into new territory but I did find it pretty entertaining and enjoyed it. It was very slick and quite light-hearted in places as well.
Then there's the most important part - Bruce Willis. Big Bruce is an absolute legend, top man.
I'd probably give it 7 out of 10 - not a classic but I didn't expect that. Crap title though.
I'm 37.

Kidulthood will probably make it there eventually. Its not a major release so sometimes they take a while to release prints to every cinema that wants one. As Perth Playhouse isn't part of a chain (eg Cineworld, VUE etc) they are well back in the queue.

Watched 'Birth' the other evening and, apart from the fact it had Nicole Kidman without her kit on again (Pezza take note!), it was a good story line about a dead husband who is reincarnated as a child......

Seen the following movies lately:-
Walk The Line - Outstanding film.
Syriana - Also a very good film, although plot is very very heavy, very complex
Munich - great film, loved it
Jar Head - Also enjoyed it very much, not your typical war movie.
Final Destination 3 - Load o bollocks! no need to say anymore.
Looking forward to seeing in the near future 'The Hills Have Eyes' and 'Hostel' both look like nice gory horrors.

$15 dollars to get in here to any movie
When the olympics was on in 2000 they dropped the price to $3.00 a movie because americans are not used to paying top dollar to see movies, if they can do it for that, they should be able to do it all of the time

A bloke in my street owns a video shop and he brings down all of the new releases which are at the movies, which the movie companies are trying to sell to the shops.
I get to watch them all, every 10 mins or so a pop up message down the bottom will say something like not for retail sale or for commercial consideration, you dont notice it after a while.
This year from him I have seen on dvd:
Walk the line
Jar Head
Syriana
Munich
Just Friends
Big Mamas House 2
Death Inc
Fog
The Ringer
Underworld Evolution

I bought The Long Good Friday on DVD the other day in Tesco and really enjoyed it. I didn't actually know much about it when I bought it but would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes their crime/gangster movies - reminded me of Get Carter.
Bob Hoskins was terrific as the powerful boss who is in total control at the beginning and loses everything at the end. It's a shame he's only associated with BT adverts these days! A young Pierce Brosnan makes a couple of brief appearances as a random Irish baddy but I don't think he actually has any lines, his job just seemed to involve looking mean and cool at the same time. Some of the rest of the cast looked familiar as well, perhaps from TV, but I couldn't quite place them.
It was in the cheap bit of Tesco, well worth a purchase in my opinion. I'll definitely be watching it again soon, it's not just going to gather dust with the rest of my DVDs. 8 out of 10.

Helen Mirren is his missus in it, Gillian Taylforth (of shagging in the back of Taxis fame) is in it as is a young Dexter Fletcher (of Press Gang fame). I agree that it's a decent film, if a little reliant on stereotypes (both Irish and Cock-er-nee)

But when you look at the background to it, in the East End of London during the 70's, it is accurate, it wasn't multi-racial in those days (unless you coulnt the lot from south of the river!!)

I just did a bit of web searching and put another name to a face. It turns out that the guy who played Jeff went on to be Charlie in Casualty. Knew I'd seen him somewhere before!

Anyone on here been to see V for Vendetta yet?
I went on Wednesday night and despite the mixed reviews I'd seen and heard I thoroughly enjoyed it. It looks like a definite DVD purchase for me when it comes out. I'm not sure why some reviews were so harsh on it, can any of you shed any light on that for me?

I think the price to get into most cinemas is fairly reasonable. I assume you go to the football, which is generally around three times the price of a trip to the cinema after all. Plus, in the cinema you get a comfier seat, you're sitting in the warmth, and the entertainment often lasts longer.
Watching a copy isn't really the equivalent of watching the real thing on a big screen.

Totally agree. The cinema is a lot better value than going to the football every other week. Geezer, you need to get yourself an Orange phone - Orange Wednesday allowed me to get into V for Vendetta for £2. Obviously if you're just not into watching movies then you're not going to enjoy it but you can't say watching fake copies is better. Also, if you take it back far enough, fake DVDs tend to lead to organised crime of some sort. Piracy is just not right, end of story.
Generally speaking I love going to the cinema, but tonight was an exception. Things started badly when I discovered we were in screen 4 of Perth cinema, possibly the worst screen in the world ever. Things took a further turn for the worse when the film turned out to be devastatingly dreadful.
Hostel was the chosen film this evening. I'm not a horror film fan at all but I hoped Hostel would at least keep my attention for its duration. Sadly, the first 45 minutes or so is complete trash. Three Americans back-packing in Europe end up in Amsterdam, with a stereotypical sex and drugs storyline ensuing. It was tedious in the extreme and all just seemed to be an excuse to get some tits on the screen. Mince.
Then the guys end up in Slovakia and a load of seemingly pointless violence takes place. At this stage there appears to be no need for the gruesome violence they're subjected to. Chainsaws, knives, blowtorches and guns are used to torture the characters before a scene of sheer slapstick allows one of the guys to escape. Were we supposed to be scared at this stage? I found myself laughing at some of the ludicrous situations which followed, surely that wasn't the aim?
The film eventually drifts to a conclusion where he gets his own back and goes home. No twists, nothing unexpected. Just revenge, then home. I can't stress enough just how naff the plot was. I do have to give some credit, some of the gore was quite impressive and they did achieve some impressive effects. That didn't make up for the rest of the garbage though.
There was no character development at all, I felt nothing for any of the characters. You're about to get mutilated with a chainsaw? Oh. Such a shame. Just as we were beginning to get to know each other.
Overall this was a terrible film, one to be avoided unless you really are a big fan of horror films. It was similar to Saw except with no thread of proper plot and no real reason for the gratuitous violence on show. The aim is clearly to shock the audience and it does achieve that in places, but a film has to do more than just make you squirm a bit.
Avoid at all costs: 2/10.
dinnae mind the cinema but perth really doesnt get the films i want to see. all you get is the mainstream nonsense but i want to see other stuff which you can only see in dundee, glasgow etc......... why is this?

You've got to remember, though, that Perth is a small town. I think that for the size of Perth it does pretty well on the cinema front. Obviously the majority of the films it shows are the mainstream ones - otherwise they wouldn't make enough money to stay open - but it also gets a reasonable share of the smaller, less well-known films. Dundee and Glasgow are far bigger cities so they're always going to have bigger cinemas, more screens and more choice - but I bet Perth has a much better selection than other similar-sized towns. I think Stirling, for example, only has a couple of screens in its cinema (or at least it did when I lived there)! So you can't even get all the mainstream ones there, never mind the other stuff.

There's a late film on tonight called 'My Blue Heaven' - a comedy with Steve Martin and Rick Moranas (BBC1).
Recently I've enjoyed 'Down To The Bone'. This is not for all tastes and is a very bleak portrayal of drug addiction and the breakdown of family life in the Northern United States but is brilliantly acted. Vera Farmiga is a fantsatic actress.
It was also great to see the magnificent "Jacob's Ladder" again. 8)
