View Full Version : We Are Perth - Player of the Year - 2008/09

Andy Jackson ran away with last season's poll (Clicky (http://www.weareperth.co.uk/vforum/showthread.php?t=6415&highlight=Perth)) but who does the forum reckon is Player of the Year for 2008/09?
The captain, Kevin Rutkiewicz, for me. An inspirational figure who also popped up with some key goals at key times and generally dragged as towards the title at times.
Have included all the guys that featured regularly.

Radford I am a technophobe. I cant see the poll.
When you try to post a poll, it posts your message first, then takes you to the options for the poll. So it takes me a minute of two to type all the options in etc...
It should be there now though and the poll is set to run for seven days. All votes are public, i.e. you can see who has voted for who by clicking the number of votes next to each player.

Sheerin for me. He's lit up every game I've seen him in this season - even during the dismal performances, he's provided exactly the sort of touch of magic I've come to expect from The Wizard. I don't make as many games as I used to, but I'm delighted to have been there to witness both his wonder goal against Scumdee at McDiarmid, and his dazzling performance against Morton when we won the league. He's become one of my favourite all-time Saints players.
P.S. Are the results of this season's forum man of the match award available yet Radford?

I agree with everything BH has said but as it was the defence that saw us through when we weren't playing well I will go for Rusty.

Rutkiewicz - the solid backbone of our title win and has now become a proper club man.

I set those polls to run for seven days as well so the Airdrie one will close on Monday night. Don't really want to break the habit and close one early. In saying that, the leader after the Morton game can't be caught now. It'll be interesting to see how he does in this poll. He also won the 208 Player of the Year award, which I think works on the same basis as our MoM awards.

I've given it to rusty, he's been solid all season and appears to give 100% every game he plays. I cant fault him one bit.
Rutkiewicz for me. His performances have been immense all season (except Thistle away!) and I don't think we would have won the league without him.

I went for Irvine, but Rusty was very close. I just cant forget his goaline clearance against thistle, his goal at Dunfermline, and his part in the goal at dundee.

Inspirational!
Rusty strolled it surely but I have to say Sheerin's performance against Morton (mentioned by BH) was enough to show that he could cut it in the SPL.

I could have said Rusty but I felt Sheerin was the lynchpin in all our best performances starting with when he came on in the 2nd half against Clyde at McD. I know we lost but from that moment I felt our season was turning.

Had to be Rusty followed by the magic of Sherinhio and Irvine`s second half
of the season.
P.S. and a nod to Caff who does not always get the credit he drserves.

Anderson had 17 appearances?
Anyhoo.
Has to be Rusty. Whenever you see a ball in the air, and a challenge between him and someone else, you know Rusty's going to win it. He gives a James-esque bollocking to anyone not pulling their weight, and throws in the odd goal, too. Not only that, but he became a real talisman for the club with his beard antics, and after all, he was the Captain that brought us the title.
Honorable mentions to Sheerin, Irvine, McCaff and Savo, though.

Caff, Irvine and Sheerin all run him close though

real tough one, i went for Gary Irvine. Ruti has been an outstanding player and i am really happy for the lad that he has been able to put behind his injury problems and play a vital part of this success with the club.
however i went for gary because of the way he has improved himself over this season, his fantastic goal against dumfermilne and his diving header that saved us against partick, those two moments made me think, we're going to win this league!

I nearly voted Liam, as i think he has to be commended for being so professional all season, never once seemed to get down about being played out of position. Saying all that, i voted Rusty, as has been said, we wouldn't have won it without him. COLOSSUS

For being played out of position all season, i wouldn't say that being dropped for 2 games, is that bad. He obviously showed far more desire to be in the team than any of our loan lefties did as he continually kept them out. Although this can be attributed to them all being total shite.

I think it was a dreadful act of injustice. He could have been accomodated in centre midfield, he should not have been dropped.

You may well have a point there. I would hope he will get a few more games in the middle next season, although it may mean were playing 3 in there.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. There are dreadful acts of injustice and then there's dropping a player to the bench for one match. At a couple of points in the season Craig's form dipped a little and McInnes must have felt that leaving him out would be to his benefit. I actually think that it worked out fine as Craig's performances when he came back into the side were good.
I like Liam Craig and I appreciate the way he's stuck to his task this year despite often being played out of position. I don't think anyone could say he was hard done by for missing a couple of matches when he played almost every game.
Perhaps if we had been "accommodating" Craig in midfield all season then your man Moon wouldn't have had as many appearances.
A dreadful act of footballing injustice might have been if McInnes had waited until Alan Main was one appearance short of our all-time attendance record and then dropped him for the rest of the season. Now that would have been unfair.

I disagree. It was plain to see that he was tired and jaded in the games before he was dropped. When he came back, he looked much fitter and fresher and his performances improved accordingly.

Everyone of the squad needed to be kept on its toes thats all part of being a footballer. No room for complacency.

I'll give you exaggeration, but from that point onwards, Liam really struggled with his form. He is a confidence player and when he was struggling, Del's solution was to drop him!
Mr Moon need not worry about Mr Craig taking his place, I keep reading on here that Del rates Moon very highly!
Seriously, put yourself in Liam's boots, you're dropped and Swankie starts!
The rest of the guys that chunter on about fitness and reaction wanna pay more attention. There is no issue with either attribute and never has been. This is a guy who had no qualms in squaring up to a much bigger team mate in training because they weren't putting in a shift. Top, top bloke.

So your solution would be to continue playing him until his form and confidence returned.
The manager got it right imo.
