It was 1977, St Johnstone Under 14s were playing Glenfarg Under 14s in an away league match and the Saints' keeper was a no-show for what was due to be a needle match. The young Saints were up against the Farg's scoring machine that was Billy McHardie who was being watched by Preston North End.

Unfortunately yours truly was the tallest player in our side and was thrown the gloves. Needless to say I didn't catch the gloves or indeed much else that Sunday afternoon as McHardie netted a hat-trick which amounted for three of Glenfarg's five goals.

I was told afterwards that they'd only had four shots on target!

A Stevie Spence inspired Crazy Young Saints saved my blushes thankfully by netting six times in a game I'll never forget (no matter how hard I try).

Robbie Savage tonight was in goal for over 45 minutes after original goalkeeper Bywater was injured inside the opening 10 minutes then sub keeper Deeney was sent off in conceding a 41st minute penalty. Pulled off a couple of decent saves as well from the report on SSN.

The ultimate outfield player playing in goal award must go to the redoubtable Jim Calder who started out as a striker in the Highland League and in that guise played for Inverness Thistle in a Scottish Cup Tie against Celtic at Parkhead in a six nil reverse in 1985.

Five years later, having given up playing outfield due to a knee injury, Jim was in goal as ICT famously defeated Celtic 3:1 at Parkhead in a Scottish Cup Tie.

A great character, lovely guy and an average joiner.

Think Gordon played in goals as well one night away to Cowdenbeath when our keeper got sent off (Balavidge?), I think for a cracking right hook on their forward (could have been Roddy come to think of it) Also seem to recall we were happy to get away with a 1-0 win that night. Anybody else recall this?

That's right I remember Mickey Lawson in goal and getting huge applause when he picked up a pass back. To be honest he was quite good.

I also remember Alex MacDonald in goal, later to pick up a European Cup Winners Cup medal in Barcelona as a midfield maestro , but always a keeper for SJFC in times of need.
