    Player contracts and transfers

I honestly think there are some fans who wont be satisfied no matter what we the club/manager do. May is literally the poster boy of the cup winning team, one of our own and a player we sold for one of the highest fees we've ever received. If he is coming back, he'll be coming back whilst still in his peak years and with a lot to offer if we give him the chance to play his way into something like his old form. Reservations are understandable and I don't think this site has generally been too bad/negative about May, but jesus some of the stuff about him on that banter page and on twitter is mental. You'd think it was the second coming of Adam Morgan rather than a player who scored 27 goals in his only full season with us and who scored a double to get us into the cup final. If he does sign, I hope he actually gets a chance before he's being written off. Some of our support will be on his back immediately though, which is precisely the opposite of what a player low on confidence needs.

    Taxi for Tommy?

Very sad to see a small number of people on here continually trying to imply that all Tommy has done for us is win the Cup (especially when they're doing things like making up the formation we supposedly played to make him look worse). He has consistently succeeded with Saints and delivered strong league finishing positions - a better run of league positions than any other Saints manager has ever achieved. I'll also repeat what I say on here quite often, which is that every single time we've gone through a slump of bad results under Tommy, he has successfully managed to pull us out of it. When people start trying to downplay our greatest ever manager's achievements I really start to wonder about what their agendas are. And no I don't think he should be above all criticism - but surely there's some middle ground between criticising a manager and leaping straight to the knee-jerk reaction of calling for him to be replaced.

Every goal we concede is due to someone in our team either not doing their job good enough or taking a risk that doesn't come off. Danny is getting made a scapegoat by many, pretty unjustly imo. Folk can go on about him not being value for money but you could go through the whole side and there's plenty who aren't. Danny can be a game changer, we will need that at times this season, I'd keep the chubby wee bouncer batterer.

    Taxi for Tommy?

I'm going to do something very dangerous and mention politics. The argument from those negotiating Brexit is they need to have no deal on the table to get a (good) deal. Equally, I don't think it helps us to talk about TW having a free hit effectively. He should feel under a bit of pressure. He has taken the conscious choice to shake up this squad so will have to live or die by that decision. Where we are now isn't a result of bad fortune that the manager has earned the right to remedy, he has put us in this position. We've had bad runs in the past and the club (absolutely correctly) haven't wavered in their support of him. This feels different though. What isn't acceptable is the language used at times. Whatever happens with TW, the respect for him should never diminish. And as for those that actively seem to be willing him to fail? What a miserable existence.

Despite a shaky start in defence , a young Saints side took the lead in the opening minutes through Jordan Northcott. The diminutive Hamilton & McFarlane's pace on the wings caused the Cove defence problems on a very heavy pitch. Apart from Martin Scott, who came on as a sub. (and scored) , the rest of the Cove players came off a 5-0 victory against Edinburgh City, Chances were created at both ends and Cove equalised from a cross from the left in the 27th minute. Max Johnstone , making his loan debut in goal, allowed a tame header from the unmarked Brown to squirm into the net, despite getting both hands to the ball. H/t. 1 - 1 The heavy rain continued throughout the game and it came as no surprise that the Saints guys tired as the game wore on. Despite this , they were still creating chances on the break , notably rounding the keeper , but not able to get a telling finish from a tight angle. Also a thundering shot from the left of goal which came crashing off the crossbar. Cove introduced their Big Guns , Martin Scott and man of many clubs (Aberdeen , Arbroath , Brechin , Alloa , Dumbarton , Raith ) Mitch Megginsoni inthe 61st minute. The outstanding Liam Gordon making his comeback from injury was replaced by Calum Rae in 75 minutes. 4 mins. later Cove went in front when Park scored from close range. Cove put the result beyond doubt when Megginson (81) and Scott (88) added to the score line. Despite the scoreline the Saints acquitted themselves very well in front of an appreciative support. Strength and experience told in the end. Max Johnstone had a debut to forget , although he pulled off a few good saves.

If the medical was done and everything set for his return last night and then for whatever reason the deal fell through, the club have to get some sort of statement out today. Otherwise you can guarantee the following: a) Vine/May will get a story in the papers about how it was Saints fault b) All the rumours will continue to grow legs and that will feed into the backing off the park and at games If it came down to money, Saints were totally within their rights to backout the deal/cap their offer - no player is bigger than the club. But the key thing is that the club can't stick their head in the sand about this - even if just to take the pressure off Tommy we need some sort of statement asap.

Stevie May and his “advisers” (whoever they may be) would have been naive in the extreme to think they would be offered the same deal again after taking the piss out of the club in particularl Tommy Wright. It’s all about actions and consequences and it was May and his people’s action that soured the deal. Im not entirely convinced that the club are to blame for the current situation ,after all Tommy Wright clearly stated on radio pre Celtic game it was not the club who “moved the goal posts”. Stevie May ain’t the player we all worshiped 5 years ago,I think there was an element of chancing one’s mit when it was obvious our need for a striker and in particular our desire to bring him back to the fold.Personaly I don’t think there’s much interest in Stevie from other clubsand he could well end up back with us,it will take something to break the stalemate between the two parties but an enhanced deal isn’t the answer.

I think sacking our best ever manager because we got knocked out of a cup competition before the season started is sound logic. We should ignore the fact that we’ve finished; 6th (cup win) 4th 4th 4th 8th 7th in his six full seasons previous. Barry Ferguson, who is doing an ok job in the fifth tier of Scottish football with a club that is being bankrolled, after being hounded out of Clyde, would be a great successor. I can’t see what could possibly go wrong. #tommyout #bazzain

    Betfred Cup

Whilst it's easy to write this game off as a glorified friendly, with a smaller squad this season there is no doubt we will have to rely on these players fairly regularly as the season progresses- we are dreadfully short of quality in certain areas and writing this game of as a friendly doesn't cut it for me. This could be a very long season if we don't strengthen.

Steve Brown - doing a good job?

Going even further back I can remember when Saints' PR consisted of a billboard (borrowed from an Evening Telegraph seller) outside St Pauls saying "Match Off". If they were really making an effort it would say "Match Off - Snow".

I'm one of the two hours travel types and although often frustrated, it's just what I do on a Saturday afternoon, work permitting. My opinion is if we can't get May or Cummings, just go with what we have. If we could just cut out this "lone striker" crap and play two up front, then we might just form a decent partnership from Hendry/Kane/McMillan.

    Jeanfield in the Scottish Cup

Yesterday Jeanfield entered the William Hill Scottish Cup for the first time. We were drawn away to Coldstream in the first preliminary round to be played on Saturday 10 August. The draw was also made for the second round and the winners of our tie will be at home to Linlithgow Rose or Preston Athletic with a place in Round 1 at stake.

Steve Brown - doing a good job?

So when your team is on a bad run you just turn your back on them and go and watch someone else? From where I live I could easily start going to ICT, Ross County, Elgin or any number of decent Highland League teams. Or I could just continue to skive off work early and drive 110 miles down to Perth in whatever conditions the A9 can throw at me to support my team and then drive 110 miles back. Yeah, I think I'll just keep doing that, no matter who our chairman or manager or three goals a season striker is.

Steve Brown - doing a good job?

I find it weird that over the course of this thread people have convinced themselves that the club apparently wants to get relegated (ridiculous) and has stopped spending money so that it can be sold (none of the recent investment in the team throughout last season backs that argument at all, and neither does the fact that we offered Stevie May a bloody good deal that would apparently have made him our highest paid player ever) and that somehow a Championship club is a better investment for an outsider than a struggling Premier League one (why?? and besides, we're not a struggling Premier League club - since promotion, we haven't had a single season where we've struggled or been in a relegation fight). Also frightening that people think some moneybags investor would be the answer for Saints, after all the club has been through and all we've seen other Scottish clubs go through. Is there a single example of a big-money outsider rocking up at a small Scottish club and it ending well?

Paper talk. How many goals has May scored since he left Saints ?. Anyone thinking he is the answer to our problems are living in hope. If he can't score for teams that create chances then I don't know how he ,or anyone is going to score 10 for us. 10 Tommy's new target as I think he realises 15 not realistic.

Lets move on from May. It's sad that he has not chosen us but money talks and we have our ceiling. Frankly I was bit MEH about him coming back and my biggest issue is we have lost valuable time when we should have been looking at other targets. I'm still hopeful TW will have someone in the frame by next weekend.

I've been told by multiple people the Kojak poster on here will be correct. In that case, we've offered May the biggest contract in the clubs history to come back, hes agreed to it, him and his agent have then come back in at the final second and demanded EVEN MORE money from the club. Steve Browns refused to up his offer, and May is now refusing to sign the contract. The striking situation is awful just now yes, but I'm not even convinced May deserves that initial offer never mind demanding even more, we can't just chuck three players wages at him because we're in a blind panic and he was good for us five years ago. I'm not sure what Browns done wrong?

Not so much do we need him, more would we want him Can't disagree with any of your comments, this bi-annual rhetoric that eminates from McD is Oh so predictable and quite frankly becoming tedious and boring. Brown has already stated he has no intention of passing the club to any family member so in my opinion a new fresh stimulus is required(not taking anything away from what the Brown family have done for this club, but every business has a cycle and it may be; not saying it is but could it be this cycle is now heading towards a downward trajectory). With a requirement for new and fresh investment, positive attitude, improved communication to move forward

    Ask Brown a question

Could of written this myself. Season ticket holder since 83, was relatively young when the slide happened so I guess it's been mostly good times, with the last 10 years being the peak. However I have found myself more and more disillusioned with it. Seems to be certainly from an 'outsiders' perspective that an apathy has set in since the cup final. Winning a cup or reaching a goal I guess can go one of two ways, you get a taste for it and strive to repeat it on or you relax. It seems to be the latter. To be fair I think part of my feeling is not just Saints fault I feel this way, its Scottish football as a whole. Allowing The Rangers to exist and ride rough shod over the whole system, where others went to the wall showed up Scottish football for what it really is and quite frankly, what's the point. I have my season ticket, however personal circumstances at the moment mean I don't feel obliged to go and I don't really feel guilty. I certainly didnt feel the need to turn up to our past home games this season to watch such an unfinished product.

I haven't voted, I think its a bit more complex than a yes or no answer. Is he perfect-No, is he running the club prudently-yes and there's lots of questions and answers in between, I wish there could have been a middle of the road option as really that's probably where anyone should be running the club.

In Geoff's day there were four other directors plus Duffer. I fail to see how SB thinks he can run the club on his own as well as a house building firm. I think that is demonstrated by the irregular and ill thought out statements from the current chairman around the playing budget. We were a well run club, not sure that's the case now.

My two experiences of watching us play away in Europe were Monaco and Luzern, which were both incredible trips. Rosenborg's a bit more of a sore memory for me as I'd booked up to travel and then had to pull out due to illness. But I'd also give a special mention to the home game against Luzern, which I think was possibly one of my favourite ever experiences at McDiarmid. Fantastic performance on the pitch, a thrilling penalty shoot out ending, and a brilliant, noisy atmosphere under the McD floodlights. It's not always possible to get to all the away games for all of us when we qualify, but it's nights like that Luzern game at home that make me desperate to watch us in Europe again. One thing I could never understand was when some people started treating these matches as if they were some sort of inconvenience. For me, they were the absolute pinnacle.
