  1. Agree with most of what has been written so far, much improved performance last night. With special mentions to Robinson, DJ, Sprangler and Benji who I thought were all excellent. But definitely worth mentioning the performance of Liam Gordon, I thought he was absolutely tremendous, defensively solid and also seemed to spend the night urging the players forward at every opportunity, he even stepped out from defence and played one or two decent forward passes. He's been the subject of a lot of stick this season (some merited, some way over the top) so only fair to acknowledge when he performs well.

    VAR V St.Johnstone

Hopefully there'll be a gigantic VAR c*ck-up in the final Old Firm game of the season and it costs one of them the title. That's the best chance we have of something actually being done about this mess.

  3. Horrible game to watch, however playing so badly and get a point, will do. Just a word on todays opponents- I hope they get relegated and never darken our door again, anti football , time wasting and falling about 'injured', an absolute disgrace.

  5. Can you imagine any other business where hard work, dedication and competence drives standards up, then the customers just accept the acquiescence to how things used to be? Customers would just walk away. Especially if the price of an inferior product was only rising.

  6. I personally don't understand this way of thinking. I'll admit I'm a younger fan, but why is it a bad thing to have standards? Should we be winning league titles? Absolutely not, but from 2012/13 to 2020/21 we finished no lower than 8th. 3rd 1x, 6th 1x, 4th 3x, 8th 1x, 7th 2x, 5th 1x. Six times in the top 6. I see that as setting mid-table as a standard which is on the players to uphold, why shouldn't the fans have reasonable expectations given the last 10 years of results?

  7. Yep, I really think relegation would be disastrous for us and we could end up stuck in the lower leagues for a long, long time. Just look at what's happened to Hamilton, Partick, ICT, Dunfermline, Falkirk etc. If we went down we could easily find ourselves struggling just as much in the Championship as we have been in the Premiership. For me it's absolutely vital that we keep our place in the top flight, no matter how we do it.

  11. I sincerely hope Livingston do eventually go down, what a horrible shower, never seen so many 6 foot pluss men feigning injury just to break the flow of the game, they were so thick they carried on doing it at one all,did they not realise a draw was no good for them or is it so intrenched in their psyche that’s just what they do.

  12. I know theres been a lot of talk about the guys mentality being the difference but for me the difference between Saturdays performace and last night is soley to do with the system. We had less players on our 18 yard box and for the first time this season had attack minded players high and wide. This gave us so many more passing options going forward and resulted in much less backward passing due to no passing lanes. The mentality difference comes from players now being able to play positively rather than negatively which clearly instilled confidence as the game grew last night. As much as I think the torrid football we have watched lately lies directly with Levein and Kirk, its worth crediting them for changing from "their system". Its something that Davidson so stubbornly rarely did, and on the odd occasion he did it almost felt like he didnt want another system to work in case it proved the fans right. Tin foil hat stuff I know. I guess we have to wait and see what the line up is for Saturday, but if we revert back to the old system my fears will have been answered. Please no more 5 at the back and narrow systems, I'm begging you.

  14. The "you're clearly a young fan who's spoiled by success" line is the shite we got from older fans who happily seal clapped while Callum Davidson and Ian Flaherty drove us into the ground losing almost £2m over a year. I can't see that type of comment now without assuming the next comment is along the lines of claiming anyone under 20 isn't a real fan because they've never experienced the 3rd tier or lower.

  15. Knowing what Saints are like when it comes to selling players, probably a very small one. That's why I'd rather we just held onto him for another year. I think another full season of having a goalkeeper as good as that is worth a lot more to us than the £200,000 or whatever it would be we'd end up selling him for. I wonder if there's a chance Celtic might show an interest in him.

  17. I know there's always the chance of taking a hammering at Celtic Park or Ibrox no matter what we do (far, far better Saints teams have gone there and lost by more goals), but our team just feels so flat, unmotivated and poorly organised at the moment, and that's a big worry regardless of the opponent. I've no problem with us playing one up front as it can be effective if done well (we basically won two cups and qualified for Europe with one player up front - ironically a player who is still ours but apparently surplus to requirements), but what was the actual plan yesterday? Our five defenders just camped out on our own 18 yard line and invited them to come at us. Celtic just had to bide their time and wait for us to crack. On our part there was no pressing, no pressure on the ball, no one looking to have a go. Why do we never go to places like this and press them any more? Is it a fitness issue? Sidibeh did everything he could up front but honestly, what did Levein expect him to do? Outpace the Celtic defence and beat two or three men on his own? Seriously, we need to have a better plan than that. I've been saying this for years now but I really feel Stevie May would bring a lot to our midfield, especially in games like this one. He tracks back, he breaks forward, he tries to force opponents into making mistakes, he's the only guy who seems to move when we have the ball. He'd bring way more energy to our midfield than Carey (for example) does. Levein himself sounds like a defeated man in his interviews: as flat and out of ideas as the team, and way too quick to criticise the players when perhaps it's his own approach that is the real problem. I'm sorry to say that I just have absolutely no faith in him at all. Whether we stay up or not, I want a fresh approach for next season.

  18. Please, please, remind us how bad it was 50 years ago and how thats our level. The 3rd most successful club in Scotland over the past decade with a turnover of over £12m, and a group of older fans still think we're a part time outfit dreaming of the top flight. Times change, and you should probably remember the mindset that dragged us out that shiteheap and moved things upwards. It certainly wasn't "what do you expect? We're a wee diddy outfit who are lucky to even share a park with top flight sides".

  20. Absolutely. Imagine what would happen to Carey if he tried to speak to Ando, Fraz, Cuptie or Eastie the way he speaks to Robinson or Sprangler. I really really don’t want St Johnstone to get relegated. I really really dislike the quality, personality and heart of so many players in this current squad.

  21. Livingston put their shitters up them a week ago and scored twice. We didnt manage a shot on target until 3-1 in the 81st minute. Celtic played so well because they had nonstop attacking opportunities and there was absolutely no pressure on them at any point. Just players continously backing off. Accepting shite like that and giving players/managers a pass for it is more likely to result in relegation than saying its not good enough. We've accepted half hearted shite for far too long under this pathetic attitude we can't do any better.

  22. Keep on happy clapping champ. I wasn’t expecting anything because I know how gutless this side is. We can at least attempt to score a goal rather than planting 11 men behind the ball against a celtic side that have struggled recently. I love how people start to question if someone is a fan if they complain about a result. What condescending pish, what qualifies you to decide who is or isn’t a fan?

  25. Pleased to see the club doing something to mark this occasion. As it's going to be on a Saturday in November, if we have a home game on that day I'd really like to see the 2014 team brought out onto the pitch too. To this day it pisses me off that the city of Perth itself did nothing to commemorate the day. No plaque, no statue, no piece of art, nothing renamed. Just absolutely nothing.

  26. Was that the longest league league game in Saints history? The irony is that Livingston's time wasting was probably what killed them. Had they changed their approach and had a bit more faith in themselves they probably would have won that. Given how bad things looked at this time last week, I think you have to say four points from these last two games is a pretty good outcome and has given us back a tiny bit of breathing space in comparison to how things could have been. My feeling is we took Aberdeen by surprise by hitting them with two up front and particularly Kimpioka's pace. But yesterday Clark was essentially playing as a midfielder for most of the game which meant Kimpioka was playing on his own against three big defenders who were ready for him and he just didn't really stand a chance. Having two strikers on the pitch is a step forward but we need to be brave enough to actually use them as strikers or it becomes a bit pointless. Sidibeh and May both looked lively when they came on and I like our striking options at the moment but I'm not sure the best way to use them has quite clicked together yet. And when DJ had to go off it seemed to kill off our gameplan a bit. Just a general thought, but surely something has to be done about the amount of players now going down holding their heads to get games stopped? I think if players with head "injuries" had to go off the pitch for five minutes to have these injuries monitored/treated you'd very quickly see a big reduction in the number of players claiming to have had head knocks.

  27. As you know, I think he brings a real solidity to our back line. Quick, mobile, careful in possession and wins every battle. Never will you see that man getting turned easily, muscled off the ball or out jumped in the air… Said someone in 2015! He galumphed on. Kicked a couple of Livi players. Kicked a couple of our own players. Pondered, hoofed the ball out the pitch. Stumbled and wobbled about for a while. The full time whistle went, and he hobbled off. Good day at the office for the young man.

  28. Bit of a turnaround in last few minutes. Saints equalise and St Mirren score two to beat Aberdeen. With County losing too not such a bad day for Saints as it might have been. Well winning not so good but at least it was against an arse cheek.

  29. That was a great and assured performance. From the start the players were fighting for every first and second balls. Constantly getting back in to position and breaking up the play - really hard working shift from everyone. It was obvious that there had been a discussion about this work ethic. Sprangler was steady, doing the simple work in the trenches and I hope he starts more often, ( he did take a knock late in the first half ), McGown is such a good leader at the back and I thought Gordon had a strong game too. Robinson looked more confident when going forward and Dan Philips - even doing his usual shift was clearly blowing out his ass near the end but was determined to see out the win, back tracking to hassle the Dons players. Shinnie was peed off that Dan and Sprang gave as good as they got. JD looked really classy and was loving his role out wide and Kimpy has pace to burn and what a great goal. For those not there or able to see it the most pleasing thing about the win for me was the players reaction at the end! Embracing and fist pumping! Even Levein was being hugged by all the players and this confirmed to me that this is team very much on board and believing they can win games and repeat this performance. Special mention to Steve May who I thought was jsut marking time - he was up celebrating the goals from the bench and came on and showed he can still do it if he's called on. Well done Craig Levein and all the team.

  30. Big improvement. I think you could really see how using fewer defenders meant we were less crowded along our own 18-yard line and we were actually able to move the ball forwards, especially with Kimpioka's running up top. That starting XI was only one player different from the one I suggested I wanted us to go with at the start of this thread, although the formation was different. I'm not convinced Matt Smith is suited to playing wide right but can see why there would have been a desire to fit him in somehow. Think Sprangler's ability to put in a tackle and play a simple pass makes such a big difference to our overall play. We're better at holding onto possession when he's on the pitch, which frees up our other midfielders to play their game and get forward, and our defence stay protected without needing an extra man in there. Surely he has to keep his place for the foreseeable? Shout out for DJ who I felt had probably his best game for us and was linking up really well with Kimpioka. I've been really unconvinced by him so far but I think you could really see he was in a more comfortable role last night and should never, ever have been used as a lone striker. I do think our evening was helped quite a lot by Aberdeen being awful and having their home fans on their backs every time they took a second touch of the ball - but you take what you can get. I think it's really important that Levein keeps the same starting XI for the Livingston game, to send the message that if you play well and win you're rewarded with keeping your place. Please, please, please no more needless tweaking of the team. Give these players a chance.

  31. What do you think Saints should have done? The article says we made previous attempts to keep him. It's highly likely his agent would have been advising him to wait and see what other offers come along. And really, why would he want to commit his future to Saints when we could easily be playing in the Championship next season? Even if we stay up, playing for Saints doesn't exactly look like it's a lot of fun these days. This time next year it'll be Mitov we'll be facing up to losing, unless there's a plan to cash in on him this summer.

  35. Enjoyed him not getting a simple pass and us losing the ball, just to see him twirling around jumping up and down stamping his feet like a literal child while Celtic pressed onto our defence. Theres so few players in this squad who'll be able to cope with any sort of high intensity play off game.

  39. May's never been the kind of striker who's going to win headers. If you watch the YouTube video of all the goals he scored in his peak season 2013/14, I think only one of them was a header and only one of them came from a cross. We need to play to our strikers' strengths and that's never going to involve pumping high balls up to May, especially against a team like Livingston. I'm pretty pleased with the fact that we have a few different kinds of strikers at the moment and think they're all going to have an important part to play between now and the end of the season. I'd still say May is the best all-round footballer out of the four of them and for me he's the one who's most suited to playing a bit deeper. Clark is the best out-and-out goalscorer and has to be first choice, and needs to be getting into the penalty box. Kimpioka looks brilliant at running on to through balls and seems to be a really good finisher in those situations, if we can exploit that. Sidibeh seems to want to do a bit of everything and is fast, hard working and likes to try having a shot from all angles. These are the best options we've had for quite some time but they all need different types of service so we need to make sure we're giving them that.

  40. That was a truly brutal watch. I knew after five minutes that we were going to be lucky to get anything out of the game. The ref's are going to have to realise that fans have actually payed to get in to watch the game and this type of time wasting tactics is driving fans away. If anyone had the misfortune of bringing along a friend on Saturay I suspect that friend won't be rushing back anytime soon. I think any team would have struggled against Livi on Saturday - they set out their stall early and had done their homework; Kimiopka was closed out early and never got away from their giant centre backs. I would say that we were very poor and never managed to exert any control on the game; we just didn't seem to have the nous to affect the negative tactics of Livi. The pitch doesn't help and needs dug up and buried - it's a disgrace and doesn't lend itself to playing football. If we had any serious VAR intervention our game would have finsihed at 5.30pm! Disgrace. I came away feeling like it was good result given the circumstances. Their were few encoutraging performances - Kelts had a tidy assured game and DJ looked good before his departure, Nicky Clark reminds us he can score goals and McGowan is still for me the key player in defence.
