Aye for me the Totten period was the most memorable in terms of exciting football. There was a great passion for the club from both players and fans that seems lacking these days.Maybe I'm just being nostalgic but i definitely felt more connected to the club than now.The heart and soul of Saints is sorely missing at the present time imo.
Think TW was one of our best managers and Davidsons success was off the back of that.I certainly echo BHs previous post that CD although ironically managing us through a double cup win then went on to blow our best chances in Europe and systematically ruin the team and waste millions of pounds on poor players.Just a shame TW was never given this money.Just imagine where we would be now.I still feel pissed off about it tbh

Yeah, I agree that Tommy is our best ever. He not only won our first major trophy, but also laid the foundations for future successes.
However, I wouldn’t say that Ormond and Totten were too far away from him when it comes to achievements.
Ormond is up there, and has the stand named after him, because he managed to create a team that was capable of taking on Rangers and Celtic, at a time when both of them, and maybe even Scottish football as a whole, were arguably at their peak.
To finish third in 70/71, above a really strong Rangers side who went on to win the European cup winners cup the next year, is an incredible achievement.
Celtic at the time were one of the best teams on the planet, taking on the likes of the then, all conquering Leeds United, along with the rest of Europe's top teams.
To be able to hold our own, over the course of a full season, in that kind of company is again, incredible.
Totten did an amazing job in turning what was essentially a pub team, into an exciting and successful top league side in just a few years.
The football his team played at that time was great as well. None of this well organised nonsense you have these days. It was "get intae them" from start to finish.
Moorey, Maskrey and big Roddy at a packed out McDiarmid. Good times.

Pretty grim that any player in a team that's in the position we are in should feel they have the luxury of taking "a huff".  Toddlers in adult's bodies.  If I allowed a bad attitude (aka "the huff") to be seen by my employer if we were under pressure to deliver, I wouldn't last too long - sure others are in the same boat.
Frankly, I'd rather we punted the both of them (one is a lightweight currently being found out in this league, and the other was an overhype not exactly setting the heather alight) and brought in a couple of guys who actually show a bit of character - since "character" is exactly what this team is missing right now.   There should be no place for overgrown children.
Don't want to give 100%?  There's the door.

Agree to an extent (I think there's a whole host of issues that have led us here, short-term thinking being just one of them). But I'd say the difference right now is that it's getting the short-term right that is absolutely vital. Up until the last couple of years that wasn't the case: we had time and space to get the long-term stuff right, and didn't do it.
Giving Macca a three-year deal wasn't short-term thinking. It was just really, really bad thinking. And we might have just done exactly the same thing again with Levein.
I'm totally on board with changing the set-up, building something new and moving the club forward for the long term. But is Levein the guy to do that? Personally I feel he needs to prove that by keeping us up. Then the bigger project starts.

    So, it's Craig Levein then!
I never even thought about him when all the speculation started.

    Pros:
I'd have him over Neilson, Martindale, Brown, Mulgrew etc. (To be honest, the only realistic option I'd have had before him would be Tam Courts, who I didn't like when first mentioned, but having checked his record and what he's been up to recently, I started to warm to the idea.)
We're going in the opposite direction of appointing "young and hungry" than we have done for years, which judging by the recent performances is a good thing.
He apparently gets things organised quickly, which we badly need.
He's not learning on the job and will know what to do as soon as he walks in the door.
He's a calm head in charge, the opposite of Maclean.
He's a well known name and hopefully will get respect from the players.
It's good to have somebody who's already high profile agreeing to be in charge of the club. When was the last time that happened?
A high profile appointment might give a boost to the players.
    Contacts! He must have loads.
    Cons:
The feeling in your stomach that this could go either way, but I suppose that's the same of any appointment.
His last stint at Hearts, and what my Jambo mates were saying about him at the time. They talked about strange decisions, selections, lost it etc. Hopefully his time away from management has refreshed him after that.
    THAT Scotland game.

He's got a decent squad to work with, he'll hopefully get a reaction from them, and he'll have time to get to know them all before the January window, when he might be able to unearth a few gems.
Anyway, he's our man and he gets my full and unequivocal support.

Wishing him all the best and looking forward to prelonged stay in the top flight.
Gets my vote. Well done saints, great appointment.

So glad I made a last minute decision to go last night.
Great performance all round and I came away thinking we still have a real chance to be in the top league again next season. Good to see McGowan back in the fold- played well and lasted the whole game. Something strange about him being cut- defence were pretty much on top of things and were snapping in to challenges. Still think Consodine is a bit of a liability but if we can get young legs around him he'll do fine. Carey is a moaning C*** but he had a good game!
Really impressed with Robinson and Smith and Sprangler definitley fitted in well back there. There is no substitute for a goal scorer and Clark was excellent - salvation may rest with him.
My MOTM was Kane - considering he's been out for long spells his work rate was outstanding and he's so fit.
Nothing beats staying back with your fellow fans and acknowledging the players as they come off and them sharing the adulation.
We are alive and well and if nothing else we won't go quietly.

I think you and Rad are the same as a lot of us and feel Macca deserves every chance, hoping that we are going to see something positive to give us a prayer but the stats and the performances don't lie. He has to go if we lose on Saturday.

For judging players the general rule of thumb is ~800+ minutes, so half thinking do the same for a manager. By that point we should be seeing trends developing.
If youre being kind you only look at the league, so thats 9 games.
So aye if youre being generous then you give him Livingston, Motherwell then Aberdeen, to see what happens and where we seem to be headed.

How much leeway are you willing to give him? The only positive result he's had is a battling rearguard at Parkhead!
The league cup was a disaster.
We have no identity and no leaders. It's like going back to CD changing personnel and tactics each week to see if it works.
I'm consistant in my view that to give him a three year deal was crazy and we'll be paying him gardening leave in a month's time if he lasts that long.

Kane and Clark seem to be always getting scans.
If these guys aren't even near training yet so doubt if we will see them much before Christmas.
If we are going into this campaign with May and Jephcott we have problems.

So your telling that if we start the league season with four straight defeats we are going to close ranks and just carry on regardless?
I'm hoping that Steve McLean can turn this ship around but you can't see any evidence of improvement throughout the league cup stages. The board chose the cheap option in a young manager with no real experience who was CD's right hand man; I hate to say it but this could summon the end of our premier league status.

Absolute disgrace. The club is dying.
McLean was never the answer - he was a good part of the problem and should have been punted with rest of the staff along with Clum. Shows you the level of nous of the disinterested board giving him the job in the first place. Obvious the guy hasn't got a clue. If they punt him Monday and get someone who knows what they are doing we might have chance. Otherwise it's curtains. Feel sorry for those who paid to watch this today.

He must be starting to realise the gravity of the situation. 3/4 signings won’t cut it.
We’ve been left with a mix of ageing players who frankly don’t want the ball the second we go a goal down and youngsters who are not ready.
I think relegation is the obvious reality now so I kind of get chucking these youngsters in but if they are to have any chance they need the experienced players to perform which just isn’t happening.
The mess Davidson and Flaherty left this club under Steve Browns disinterested stewardship won’t be fixed for a long long time.

I was impressed with our attacking play on Saturday. It seems that McLean's preferred way of playing is slowly starting to work.
It feels like it's been a while since we've been so positive going forward and with all of the front men linking together so well.
I also thought Ballantyne's ability to look for, and make a telling forward pass, gave us a cutting edge that we've been missing for a while.
Winning four nil was a nice change. I feel that in the recent past we would have gone two up and shut the game down rather than continue to go forward.
It's certainly a much nicer feeling now looking forward to games thinking that you might actually get entertained with the football we play.
