Old Lethamite got a reaction from HOODLUM65 in VAR
With regard to the new interpretation of ball/hand/arm contact, I can only assume that the old 'deliberate
handball' rule was adjusted because of players being seen/interpreted as using their arms 'in an
unnatural position' to interfere with the flight of the ball.  We now have a situation - eg Brown on Saturday -
being penalised for a ball being deflected onto his arm with little prospect of him avoiding it.  Whatever you think of the interpretation, the punishment - a free shot from 12 yards - is well out of proportion to the 'offence'.

Linky, do you actually believe that St Johnstone have a right to be in the top division?

Once again Steve Brown seems to be taking a lot of stick and flack from people on here, but yet again I struggle to see what he's supposed to have done wrong. He's allowed us to bring in 2 long term targets, plus another on a permanent deal. He's released funds to go and make bids for players, that we feel are fair and what they're worth, every player has a price and if we've made an offer it doesn't mean saints feel it's good business to increase it if rejected. If anyone right now needs to shoulder the blame it's Davidson for being indecisive and not identifying the players we needed quicker. As far as I'm concerned, I don't even think Steve Brown is involved in any of this other than signing contracts and authorising transfer bids. Also the HoR has clearly identified players already, but it's up to Davidson and Boyd to firstly agree to them and secondly sign them, there's a lot of things going wrong with saints at the minute, that cannot be argued, but some of the unjust criticism is over the top and especially in Brown's case as a result of comments/decisions made 3 seasons ago, which it appears he's learnt from.

Yep, and if you go back and watch the Saints v Dundee game from 1999 you'll hear that there was racial abuse aimed at Miguel Simao every time he touched the ball.
However - with apologies for the cliche - two wrongs don't make a right. I don't want to hear footballers being subjected to personal abuse at matches. We can't say "the other team's fans have done it (or done it worse), so it's OK for us to do it". And we can't say "that's just the way football fans are." We are the fans. If we want to change these things, it's up to all of us collectively to change them.
For me, the stuff being aimed at Leigh Griffiths during that match was unacceptable. And it's not the only unacceptable thing I've heard from Saints fans at matches. I'd like for us to be much better than this.

Griffiths is a sad sad person who seems to have issues and who, so far as I can tell, does absolutely nothing to help himself.  He knew exactly what he was doing when he walked over to kick that flare towards the stand, a view shared by a number of Dundee fans  who now want to see the back of him.  He is on a slippery slope and it is not going to be pleasant to watch his demise,
The guy who threw the flare just did something daft in the heat of the moment but to me it was very unpleasant to hear a group of Saints' fans hurling vile abuse at Griffiths which had nothing to do with football.  We should leave that sort of thing to the fans of clubs who are often mocked on here for just that sort of behaviour.

Jody and Doobs were on another planet for us, but were going nowhere before they came to Perth, and had not for a while but we took a chance and it paid off.
Clichè no.1 - You cannot win the lottery unless you buy a ticket.
Clichè no. 2 - Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
You have to give the guy a chance, surely.

Dave Duigan - Perth Academy FP - played for East Fife and a couple of the Angus teams.   He also opened the batting for Perthshire C.C.  Tom Lodge, long-serving professional with the cricket club also played a handful of games for Saints in the 50's.  But he was from Huddersfield.  He owned the Willow Tavern in South Street for a spell.

Saints yesterday released their Financial  Accounts for the 12 months to 31st May 2019 showing a Trading Loss of £150,000 . Although not great news at least we have the comport of having almost 2 million in the  Bank to cover this loss. Today I have read that Caley Thistle are holding an Extraordinary Meeting tonight to try and raise funds to ward off Administration . Apparently they are about to release their  Financial Accounts showing a yearly loss of £800.000 !!! . Without wanting to gloat about Caley Thistle's problems I think this just shows how important it is for clubs our size to have Directors who are prudent and do not let their hearts rule their heads. At times S Brown might appear pretty tightfisted but  this is necessary for the long term future of our club.

Just done a check on this it is actually 18.
For last 9 complete years, points won against Celtic from all top division clubs as follows.
    Motherwell 19, Super Saints 18, Aberdeen 17, Kilmarnock 16, Govan combined 16, Hearts 13, Hibs 13, Dundee Utd 10, ICT 9, Ross Cty 9, Dundee 7, St Mirren 4, Hamilton 3, Falkirk 2, Partick Thistle 1, Dunfermline 0, Livingstone 0.
Another fantastic stat from our return to the top division.
Incidentally, Saints taken more points from Celtic than Dundee clubs combined.

Old Lethamite got a reaction from Dave Ferg in Jim Walker
He was mainly inside  right or right half.  Played no 8 in the epic League Cup semi final against Rangers, October 1961, when we were 2-0 up at half time (Ian Gardiner with a header and John Bell with a great shot from the edge of the box).  Lost 2-3 aet, with - no surprise - Davy Wilson earning a critical penalty.  My first glimpse of Jim Baxter in the flesh.
For some reason I remember Walker scoring a late winning goal in a league match at Muirton (autumn 1960?) against Partick Thistle, winning 2-1 after being 1 down.  More impressed (I was very young) by the strong industrial language of the Thistle left back Sandy Brown, who went on to have a very respectable career at Everton.

St John's Street early circa 1953?  The car reminds me of going by bus to primary school one morning and being challenged by another boy (from another school): "What's your highest FGS?"  I hadn't a clue what he meant, but apparently kudos were earned by having seen a new car with an FGS registration higher than anyone else had seen.  GS and ES were the Perth registration marks, I think.  After FGS 999 I presume it moved on to GGS.  Happy days …..

We might be a team with our SPL compliant 10,000 seater stadium and our super underground heating system but we should show more respectful to teams in the lower divisions like Albion Rovers. It doesn't seem that long ago that Muirton Park was limited to under 5,000 because it was such a dump.
Instead of moaning and coming over all self important, try and thank the helpers from two sets of supporters who volunteered to try and get the game on for all of us.

The terracing would need to be cleared or the police could call it off. Snow had to be left on the pitch to protect from the frost.
They said they tried their best. If you had a spade instead of a keyboard maybe the game would have been on.

Unlike sevco in times of trouble ,we don’t have the sfa and spl hierarchy as our safety net.
    this is reality .

If not can we please remove the debate of whether he will or not post to a more appropriate thread.
I for one keep on looking at this thread for information on players not posters to the forum.
Yes this post is off topic like a helluva lot on here.

Great photos.  The one above - back row l to r:Jimmy Woodcock (right back),  Willie Clark (left back). Roy McLaren, ?, ?, and Archie Baird.  Front: Billy Steel, Ernie Ewen, Ian Rodger, Billy Hodgson and Joe Carr.  Woodcock was moved to centre half for a few games, and one wonders how many goals were lost at corners.  Left back Willie Clark came from Hibs (and may have played for them pre WWII) - he only died within the last couple of years.  Can anyone fill in the blanks?
