If u come up the old bridge of earn road towards perth at craigend you see a field with pigs in it. Also in that field is a round concrete cylinder, that is the tunnels chimney, used to allow the steam to escape the tunnel when steam was the locomotive in use. When going through the tunnel now u see the light coming down it to this day.

as we hit the tunnel the lights were switched off.when it became light at the other side of the tunnel,heres what had happened.several dundee fans had been assaulted and there carry outs 'confiscated' by the mental train mob .this was in the 1980's following saints and is a FACT.

im quite chuffed learning all about this history....some keen trainspotters on here with their notebooks and anoraks.

Yes you can catch Wish I was Joe McGurn down Perth Train station with more than his wee notebook each evening.... even with a Cup of Tea and a KitKat:laugh:

Did you know that Moncrieff Tunnel was bombed by the Germans during the Second World War. The belief was that the German bombers thought it was in fact Perth Railway Station as they could see the trains going in and out at either end.

I had heard there were three such chimneys although I've never spotted one. A quick look at the OS map for that area shows one item over the tunnel marked as an air shaft with two more identical markings further south.
