So far i would rate this as better than the World cup with more evenly matched teams and great atmosphere, and no fking vuvazelas...

100% agreed.

needs more qualifiers, at lest twice as much! this and the last world cup have been lacking in adventuring attacks

England were struggling big time against Italy.....as expected. Its the import of all the foreign players into the English and Scottish leagues that has lead to the death of the national teams. No room to bring through home grown talent as the focus is on buying the best players to gain league and European success where all they money is. Nothing against foreign players - its just that the game has changed over the last 20 odd years and unless things change again and the focus is put on local players at club level then national teams will not have the talent to qualify for or do well in these types of competitions. We cant really complain about it either...and neither should all these sports writers who are complaining about the English (and Scottish) lack of talent.

Yup - England national team has been in the 'land of make believe' for some time now but seem to be now well and truly in the same 'never-never-land' that we has inhabited for two decades. England are undoubtedly better than us - (though let's see) but if they are B-listers to our D-listers (am I being unfairly cruel on us?) they are not far off being C-listers.

And we know why. With Scotland it was the OF domination and then foreign imports from the mid-80's followed sheepishly by most of the rest of the SPL. We know we don't have the players, but more so - we know that the only answer is a 'drains-up' start again. And that is what the Rangers debacle has presented to Scottish football. Unfortunately for England the English Premier league is very powerful. The sort of change we may be able to start from next season is 10 years off in England.

And yet - the radio phone-in's go on about tactics, player selection, managers. Yes player technical ability is raised as an issue - but still we are hearing about Gerrard and Rooney being world class, with the likes of Oxlade-Chamberlain, Welbeck, Cleverley, Wilshire, Hart coming galloping over the hill like the 7th Cavalry to rescue English international football. They won't - they can't, they are in the same Premier League as the current bunch - they will be in a very similar premier league for the next ten years. They will develop the same strengths and weaknesses as the current bunch - and they will be playing in teams in which at least half the starting line-up will not be English.

Welcome to the club lads and lassies.

I don't disagree with that TBH.

Some of the phone in callers have been really daft IMO. As an English football supporter and the English national side, I didn't give them a rat in hells chance at Euro 2012 and alot of people shared that view. Where all this supposed 'optimism' came from, gawd knows!

I reckon they did well to get out of the group TBH and how we (England) are ranked in the top 8 of the world is beyond me.

The young guns mentioned are very good players but no better or worse than the Rooneys, Walcotts and Gerrards of a few years ago. Nothing will change in 2014, England will get knocked out in the 1/4 finals on penalties as usual.

To be honest, watching the England v Italy game was both painful and embarrassing, they were just plain better!
