I Wouldn't Give Tommy Money Either

Well done Mr Chairman on not giving Tommy more money to waste. Look at what he has spent it on.

  1. Coulson - Permanent crock.
  2. Watson - Permanent crock.
  3. Gormley - Would rather give up football than play for us.

Then also consider.

  1. Mackay - Given a contract then barely played and paid off.
  2. Wright - See above for Mackay.
  3. McKay - Brought in to replace Wright but not good enough so paid off.
  4. Sutton - Another pay-off.
  5. Gilchrist - Maybe not expensive but still money on a crock.
  6. McCawl - What was the point?
  7. Doyle - Played about 5 minutes.
  8. Krachunov - Hopeless.

Of course there have been good signings but Tommy wastes a lot of the club's money and that must be a worry for the chairman when it comes to the big picture.

Some signings are a hit, some are a miss, who knew that a small budget and small pool of players willing to join would have such an outcome.

Truly shocking.

Only things I worry about is his willingness to sign injury prone players (I tend to believe a small squad can't carry passengers) and the quality of strikers he's signed (although I still believe Cummins is decent)

I agree. We should spend the money on some of these PED things and feed them to the youngsters.

If only we had a manager who brought us some success. Dark times indeed.

Tommy is a great manger for Saints, no question.  He has though undoubtedly benefitted from the quality experienced players who were already at the club many of which still make up our starting 11. Wright, Anderson, Miller, Muzz, Maclean, MacKay, Mannus, Easton, Scobbie.

He has struggled to replace some of these guys. No doubt. Central midfield signings have been a struggle. Strikers have been a disaster.

He did well with O'halloran and Swanson no doubt and Foster and Joe look good buys too. The list of poor signings is certainly a lot longer though.

Thankfully we still have the core of our team and Tommy can get the best out of these players but we will inevitably need to replace these guys. The squad needs some investment!

Thanks for the reasonable replies latterly, rather than the smart ass ones. My first post made no reference to Tommy's ability as a manager, which is very good. I don't blame the chairman for being wary of giving him money though. As Broon says, the players he signs are rarely as good as the ones already here.

Anyone who is happy with what Tommy has done in the market needs a reality check.

Spot on as usual broon.

Are you Steve. As much as we appreciate Tommy ,he has wasted a lot of wages on duds.

How many managers in the league have a 100% successful transfer record?

Look at the turnover of players at Ross County for example.

Even the ones that have money spend can make a signing that doesn't work out. O'Halloran for example would be deemed to be a failed signing at Sevco currently.

When you're dealing almost exclusively with loans and free transfers, like 99% of the clubs in this country do these days, there's always going to be a high risk that you'll end up signing a bunch of donkeys. I wonder what Tommy's superstar to duds ratio is when compared to Del and other recent managers. Is he really any worse?

People always tend to look back and remember the successful ones like Sandaza and Morris, but there were also plenty of Nick McKoy's and Scott Dobie's in there as well.

I was trying to find a pic of Del's summer of duds but couldn't find it. Google did show an article about his 27 signings, at time of publishing, for Aberdeen and there were more Misses than Hits.
