He was earning £30k a week last season.

Certainly wont be getting that on the dole... is he not a free agent?  He's earned his crust, come enjoy your football at Saints.  And give him vice captaincy as the deal clincher.   Great coaching potential too...

At least he has played some games.

I reckon part of the problem with Duffy is that he hasn't played any meaningful games before joining us. With the likes of McCann, McClean and others we have sent them on loan to get first team experience in the lower leagues. We need to do the same with Duffy.

Duffy has played more 90 minute senior games in the past two months than Ralston has in the past two seasons.

Assuming he signs, we  will no doubt see, but I still think he will be more 'ready' for first team football than Duffy is. He has at least played some Championship games at his time with United

I think he played 11 games for them, over a year ago.

Hes just another inexperienced kid. I don't see any benefit at all to developing him for a season rather than Duffy.

Its a bit of an indictment on Saints youth system that we haven't brought through a young guy that is any better than Duffy.

Right back isn't exactly a specialist position.

Yeah, not ideal.

The games with United do count for something though.

I imagine some of this signing is down to wages etc. Not much of the budget left, fairly late in the transfer window...not many options out there.

I am trying to remain positive, Fisher hadn't played many games and was 'rough' when he first signed.

Just checked.

Ralston has played 10 games in the top flight, hes never played more than 4 top flight games in a season.

Their fans weren't impressed with him, and that was in the second tier. Since then hes barely played.

It would be a dreadful signing, and the only reason folk are trying to defend it is because theyve heard of him. An unknown with his background gets widely slated.

agreed it would be a disaster of a signing given the other names mentioned. Really think we need some experience to what is a very young defence

Bet this is the primary reason. Being as low as 8th in terms of budget in SPFL will leave few options.

Ralston has to be better than Duffy. Difficult to judge any player that has played for Utd in the last 3-4 years. Not as negative on him as others seem. My concern is the lack of experience anywhere at the back.

What would be ideal is a defender that could play anywhere along the back line. Duffy was signed as a squad player who can cover at RB and CB, so not necessarily brought in with RB specifically in mind.

Liam can play LB, so in an absolute emergency, he could cover there.

Ralston just makes that issue worse. Hes played 10 top flight games in his whole career.
