I see the development fee that people are talking about, but that will only be if he stays in Scotland, and this fee we would be lucky to get £100,000 ( I think we paid £35,000 for Liam Craig) if he was to go down south then we would not get anything, Simple solution is sign him up on a 3 year deal, pay him big bucks this year and then look to sell next summer for double what we would get now

I think a lot of the posts bigging up saints' (very) recent success have been tongue in cheek. I don't think there are many saints fans who need to be reminded that we are a diddy team. We all know our place. Stevie May will move on at some stage,no doubt. Everyone accepts this. But being told rotherham is the right move and they are the perfect stepping stone for him is nonsense. They can offer more money and that's it.

He's already at the right stepping stone.. One full season in the first team; he's top scorer, played in Europe, won a cup, sports writers young player of the year, regular scotland under21 and on the cusp of a full call up, and won a major trophy. Are rotherham really offering a better shop window than that?

I love the impact he's had. A local lad doing really well and hopefully on the brink of great things. I can't ever remember seeing so many shirts and t-shirts with one saints player's number on. the whole May17 thing has been brilliant. So many great moments last season and he was a massive part of it.

Oh don't worry, I read the entire post and your attempt at dramatic Irony still came across as if you were saying that if this was the end of a successful era you were done. I certainly don't appear to be the only one that read it in such a way. As much as I agree with the sentiment of said achievements you have listed there doesn't appear to be much of a point to your post.

Stevie is worth far more than 800k. I would be confident in saying that as things stand, he is capable of getting us at least 3 places in the league. That alone, over a season is worth 200k minimum. Then factor in cup runs, potential passage iin Europe this week, domestic cup games.

Oh, and even if we don't sell him we still get a development fee which I reckon could still be around 300k mark? Especially if he gets capped this season.

If our board really are that short sighted, I worry. The above figures still don't scratch the surface about the damage this whole affair has done. Time for the SB to pull his head out is arse and realise what's going on!

Good post, I was more or less resigned to the fact that we'd just accept anything around the £1m mark. When you think about how financially beneficial it could be to keep him though, it does seem short sighted.

That comment might have some kind of value if Sporting Lisbon hadn't just bought an 18 year old from Dundee Utd for £3m.  One of the top clubs in Belgium has just bought a young player who has managed less than 30 first team games in 3 years at Celtic for £1.2m.

Stevie May was reckoned by many to be the best young player in the league last season (was also in most peoples overall team of the season), with the only other contender being Andy Robertson, a left back at Dundee Utd who Premier League Hull have just bought for £3m.

So I don't think it is true that teams don't want to touch young Scottish talent.

We know all about the money down there: Ross Mccormack for £11m beggars belief!

I think we all know Stevie May will leave, whether now or, preferably, after one more season at Saints.  But either someone comes in and pays a ridiculous fee that we could use (e.g. £3m +) which doesn't look like its going to happen.  Or, we get a decent fee but he goes somewhere we can get excited about and get to see one of our own progressing and developing on a much bigger stage.

There is no animosity towards Rotherham, but the deal being discussed at the minute ticks neither box.  Would feel exactly the same if it was Peterborough, Brentford, Bournemouth or Doncaster etc etc...

You can come on here as often as you want and try to convince us how grand a club rotherham are, I'm sorry but we're just going to have to agree to disagree.

A few years ago in scotland we had a wee club called Gretna who also had a very rich chairman. He bought players ahead of more established clubs, and paid them loads. They rose up through the leagues and eventually got to the top half of the premier league until it all eventually went wrong when the money vanished.

Throughout the whole time, regardless of the fees being payed, whenever a player went there we all knew they were joining a diddy team. Just like yourselves. You'll always be diddy.

As you probably feel about us. But then we're not on your forum trying to convince you how great a move it would be for your star player to join us.

Never won a trophy, never have or will play in Europe. Never played in top flight. Average over your history is third tier of your domestic league. Your stadium is just mcDiarmid park with the corners filled in.

So well done on taking 2600 to your neighbours for opening game of the season, 2 weeks ago we took 1000 to lucern. It's in switzerland. In Europe.

Going to the bottom half of your second division to play relegation dogfights at Bournemouth, millwall and brentford is not the best career move for oor hairy wee striker.

Just had a wee look at the rotherham forum and read this..

    re: May...
"I went up to see friendlies and was chatting to a couple of guys at Morton. I mentioned we were interested in Stevie May and both guys said he is and I quote "F..kin brilliant player, but no disrespect to you guys think he would want a bigger club".

Also mentioned it to people at Falkirk and Q of the S. Was laughed at at Falkirk, but told if you do get him it will be a brilliant signing.

People at Q of the S who I spoke to were moaning about us sending development squad, but wanted to know about Mitch Rose as they said he was by far best player. Soon as I mentioned us in for May. They said " He is a very good player/striker, but needed to play in a higher league to develop more as he has the makings of being the real deal." They went on to say if we did get him we would be a banker to stay up, as he would score the goals."

Conclusion I came to was that I would be over the moon if we could get him, but I seriously doubt he would come to us. Unless SE can convince the guy that if he came to us. We would develop his game and sell him on to bigger and better things for a massive fee. Just my opinion you understand.

    Fingers crossed. "

Apparently rotherham's current star player Agard is in a similar situation to May, contract runs out at end of season and not signing a new one. He is apparently talking with Bristol City, a club in the division below.

From that quote above, Falkirk fans burst out laughing at the thought that Stevie would go to rotherham, even they have a higher opinion of him than Stevie's own agent, who is obviously only interested in lining his own pocket. Get him to **** Stevie and get someone who'll get you the right move at the right time.

Losing most games?? Are you taking the piss?? Away and roger yersel..

How many times have the mighty Rotherham played in Europe?? how many cup finals you made??  How many semis have you made?? ****me, you have not even made it passed the 5th round of the FA cup and  got to the league cup final 54 years ago. Away and spout yer pish elsewhere ya fud..

For the record. St.Johnstone have lost 49 games out of the last 140.

And finally our wee town is a City, which you correctly states only has a population of 50,00 unlike Rotherham where I believe the population is around 250,000, and yet.......

Our average attendance over the last 5 seasons is just over 4200 which is  about 8.5% of the population.

Rotherham Uniteds average attendance over the same period is about  5400 which is just over 2% of yer population. ( which is frankly PATHETIC)

So if May dos end up there then he hardly notice a difference loss or crowds wise but he will notice that compared to Perth and Perthshire, Rotherham is a shitehole..

The lad would need to mad to go.

Here's my take on what's going on:-

Negotiations with May and his agent have stalled - no middle ground on contract extension middle ground.

Rotherham manager makes statement re interest in May / ongoing discussions - question whether with SJ approval. Probably not as not the first time he has broken cover on an offer.

SJ make statement confirming Rotherham interest and by proxy inviting offers from other interested parties for May.

If SJ value / contract terms are not met for the transfer of May where does that leave matters? He continues on til end of season, unless suitable offer emerges in the January window, at existing terms. There is an agreement between now and end of season to extend for further period - unlikely. May leaves at end of season - SJ get development fee for him ( how much is this likely to be?) and effectively save the additional salary that is on the table now.

As much as we would all want him to stay, I suspect his head has turned and thus we might not see the level of performance that we saw last season if he were to stay in circumstances where SJ were unwilling to accept offers tabled. All in all I think he will go - hopefully to a team with a higher profile and aspirations than Rotherham.

Question is what then happens. Of greater concern is TW situation - long term he is worth more to us than May. He has been publicly embarrassed by Brown over signing policy - utterly reprehensible given the fact that TW gets the financial constraint bit and what he has delivered since his appointment and off field achievements in terms of community engagement. Hopefully this has been resolved but i reckon much will depend on whether or not bridges are built including squad strengthening whether or not may stays.

Whatever, the feel good factor has all but disappeared. What a missed opportunity - but not too late to repair the damage.

Clubs might agree sale price. Reckon it's contract negotiations that will hold the deal. If May doesn't like what he sees or doesnt wants to play for them then the deal is dead. It's all about the player; and will respect his decision either way. Although if he does go hope he progresses to being Scotland first choice striker in years to come. My gut feeling says this will all come to nothing. Wonder what's stalling his contract extension that started in discussion back in May....

Time to step up to the plate, tell Rotherham to do one and offer him a bumper wage, we will recoup it with interest next year. Show some steel.
