Scary thing is. How many of the injured players realistically make us that much better

Callum Booth might be able to play, he only missed last week because of a "back spasm".
Hes very much one who needs to show hes reliable, and soon, though or he should be looking at leaving in January.
We have far too many crocks taking a wage for little/no football.

Our midfield is soft as shit without McGowan, i understand not liking him as a player (i hate how he seems more interested in moaning to the ref and think it sets a bad precedent that other players follow) but keeping him out the side is absolutely mental with the squad as it is.

Hes the sort of profile we want.
20s, has senior experience, has shown ability in the past.
He'll either flop or succeed but its the kind of transfer gamble thats sensible to take. You never know why people have struggled elsewhere.

    Why not?
One bad 45 minutes, as a teenager, in your first competitive game against a side higher than League Two, where the whole team is struggling, and you completely write him off?

MacLean has a nearly impossible job.
    - Cut squad size from ~40 to ~25
    - 25 man squad must contain multiple players who've never played above the 3rd tier
    - Average age of squad must be cut
    - Wage spend must be drastically cut
    - Squad must be improved
    - Avoid relegation
Those were his tasks after last season ended.
Id rather a fresh face/voice had come in but the clubs committed itself to MacLean and hes doing as well as he can recruitment wise, IMO. Fixing us was never a one season job, never mind one window, so happy enough to deal with a shit season and possible relegation if the signs are there that the ships facing the right direction again. Any long term success for us likely needs us to be able to cope with a relegation and bounce back quickly.

Surely Gus MacPherson must have been compiling a list of potential targets over the past year. I realise we will not be the first choice of many players, but still would have be nice for the morale of the squad and the supporters if we had signed a few new players by now.
I like Macca saying he is looking for quality over quantity and is willing to wait, but it could be a risky strategy. If we go into the League Cup games and suffer some poor results against lower league teams, then it could have an impact on the mindset of an already fragile squad, particularly the younger players. I note that it has been mentioned that players in England who are out of contract are still due another months salary, so it may be the case that we see more movement towards the end of this month.
I try to remain optimistic as I can in regards to all things Saints, but it’s hard to keep remain upbeat when you look at our current squad. A inexperienced keeper, two ageing defenders, two left backs who have had injury problems, a midfield containing players like Crawford and Carey who go missing at every opportunity and then a strike force that contains two players (Clark & Kane) that are both coming back from serious injuries.
Maccas recruitment is going to have to be spot on.

Not sure its worth comparing us to every other club. Most of the top 6 sides have fairly settled, good, squads so someone like Hearts arent making deals because they are targetting specific folk to improve them.
Then youve got teams like County and Dundee who seem to be rebuilding their entire teams.
We're probably in a fairly similar position to Motherwell, who havent really signed anyone either. Squad needs improved but, numbers wise, is probably already close to being where it should be, so signings need to be very specific about what they bring so your squad has a bit of everything.
Manager said CB, FB and W were targets didnt he? We'll probably be looking for one for each position.

This was the table headed into the January window of 21/22, after our 8th consecutive defeat (which included the Kelty game).

Club had no option but to try and spend their way to safety as it was clear Davidson couldnt turn the squad around as it was.
We were still remarkably lucky Dundee sacked McPake, tbh. Theyd just won at Tynecastle and were 2pts clear of us when it happened, and only won 1 of the remaining 13 games as they finished 6pts behind us.
