Stevie May holds the cards . He doesn't need to go to Rotherham even if Saints want him too . After the window is shut , negotiate a new contract , if SB says no more fool him .

    No problem.

The buses are reliable not counting accidents on the road and delays of course.

They pretty much come when they say they are coming in my experience. I've had two late buses in 6 years and no late trains even in bad snow.

If you are more comfortable travelling earlier then there is a 6:40 bus to Bratislava  which is direct and gets you into the main bus station by 8:45. When you are there go out of the front door and cross the street. Directly opposite the bus station there are stops for the small trolley buses. Get number 210 (I think but check on a link I posted earlier as it has an English translation) which takes you up to the main railway station.  From there you can get a direct airport bus. There are loads of them and you'll see a lot of folk with suitcases heading that way.

You are right that there isn't a rail link to the airport (the word for airport in Slovak is Letisko). From the train station to the airport the bus will get pretty busy so try and get a seat with your luggage to avoid the inevitable squeeze as people travel out to a giant shopping complex called aupark en route to the airport. Here most of the bus will empty unless they go straight on to the airport.

There are also direct buses from Zlate Moravce to Bratislava at 7:20 7:50 and 8:50.

Bear in mind the bus station is about 20 minutes from the train station through Bratislava traffic which is a total pain in the backside and is likely at that time of the morning to be very busy. You might even find a traffic jam as you approach Bratislava itself so factor that into your thinking.

You can of course get straight to the bus station and then jump a taxi but without fail that will cost 20 euros because that is what it always costs unless the taxi driver is a rip off merchant of which there are MANY in Bratislava especially for foreigners. I speak to them in Slovak and they still rip me off so be warned.

Another possibility is if you are in a group you could ask your hotel if the local taxis do a flat rate to Bratislava airport and you'll be taken directly without all the stops a bus or train would make. It might cost 50 Euro or thereabouts but if there is a group of you it won't be so bad. Your call.

If I were you I would stick with a direct bus because changing and finding where you need to get to to move on can be a problem AND the time it takes to get from one bus to the next or to any train station can be tricky and if your not the kind of person who likes rushing things you'll only give yourself grief.

Plus having looked at some of the towns where you might need to change I'd be inclined to just get a direct bus because they are pretty small and obscure with the exceptions of Nitra and Trnava. If you decide to change at Nitra it is pretty self explanatory once you get there. There is a row of toilets and mini-pubs/cafes in a block and in front of them is a set of stances which are under a steel roof. You'll probably see a big yellow bus or two that says Zlaty Express. This is always Nitra to Bratislava (other yellow buses go on to Prague or Brno and they are usually at stance 1 or 2. Just read the timetables they have up. They are usually in large lettering beside each stance so I think you can't miss it.

Trnava bus to train station is walk-able and it is connected by a bridge or a walkway of some kind. It's been years since I was in that town so I can't remember.

Anyway I hope this information is useful to you and hope to meet up with you on the way.

For those travelling between Vienna and Bratislava I highly recommend taking the boat rather than the train for at least one leg of your journey. It's spectacular and gets you closer to the centre of Bratislava than the railway. Linky.

    Hi

I am Richard, I live in Slovakia and I see that the Saints are coming to Slovakia a week on Thursday.

I thought I'd give you a few heads up about the match, stadium and the Spartak fans. I hope this helps.

Trnava is about 40 minutes to an our from Bratislava by Train. It is one of the larger football teams in Slovakia, the other being Slovan Bratislava.
They have absolutely mental supporters who if they feel like a fight will give you one but they reserve this mostly for Slovan Bratislava, still it makes sense to be careful while you are in Trnava.

Trnava is called the Slovak Rome because it is full of Cathedrals.

The Stadium is close to the bus and train stations and the centre and is easy enough to find once you get in there. It is big and the fans are noisy when they are up for it so there should be a good atmosphere.

To get to Trnava from Bratislava is relatively easy.

Flying into Bratislava is the easiest but with bloody ryanair not the cheapest as I can see. If you DO fly into Bratislava then there is an airport bus that takes you directly to the main train station and you can go on from there to Trnava but if I were you I would then change for the bus station and get bus number 210. They are up on huge boards and you'll need to buy another ticket from the little machines but they are in English so don't worry.

By Train it is more expensive than by Bus. You will need to go to the main bus station or main train station to get there. The word for main in Slovak is Hlavni.

I would strongly recommend the bus as it will be about 3 or 4 Euros.

If you are flying to another airport then Budapest, Vienna, Prague or if you can get to it, Brno in the Czech Republic.

Don't stay in Bratislava if you can manage it as that town is a total rip off for everything and it is not that nice if I am honest. A big office with a small old town with massively over priced bars.

If you are staying there then the night of the game the last train back to Bratislava is at 22:35. Miss that and you're stuck so an over night stay in Trnava is probably a must unless you have alternative arrangements.

. If anyone is planning on staying until the weekend then I would recommend moving to Nitra for a day or two. I know some very cheap accommodation there and it is around 1 hour on the bus to Bratislava.

The bars and restaurants are far cheaper outside of Bratislava and the taxi drivers don't take the piss in the same way.

I may even go to the game if I can manage it. I won't have much work and can make it along but I need to watch for buses or stay the night in Trnava. If anyone is staying it would be nice to meet with fellow Scots and take in the football.

Be warned though, the last match I went to in Slovakia saw the game abandoned because some nutter chucked a pint at a ref and then ran on the park to deck him because he sent off a player for the home team.

Hooliganism is not rife here and it is unlikely you'll get any trouble but like anything else you need to be careful.

Slovak football is not strong. Spartak were almost relegated two years ago. They survived by the fact that there were two far worse teams below them and now they have got it together slightly better.

They finished miles behind Slovan for the title.

St Johnstone can win this tie but they must be at their best in both legs. Slovak teams are notoriously bad in European football often ( a bit like Scottish teams). I think this will be close.

As I say if anyone needs any help feel free to contact me and if anyone wants to meet up the week of the game I am available to help out.

Let me know and all the best,

    Richard

The extra money to sign for an extra year will not be a huge amount. Many players would be happy with the security of an extra year at the same money. The player gets the security which is a blessing if there is an injury etc. For saints the extra year is a benefit during transfer negotations especially for a prolific goal scorer. DUFC have been tying up their young talent on longer contracts. Ste vies agent will be trying to negotiate an increase but he is already quite rightly on better terms than his last contract. Saints will be stubborn about any increased cost but where that cost is reasonable which I am sure it is,then Stevie Brown needs to sanction the cost and get Stevie tied down.

Re. O'Halloran - it's interesting watching Tommy bellow instructions at him during games, much more so than any other player.  I get the impression that despite his not insignificant talent and skill, he has never really been coached very well to teach him the bits of the game that need to be learned through hard work and experience.  Tommy often also shouts at MacLean to instruct O'Halloran on the park too.

Based on this, and his performances to date, I think we'll see a continued improvement in his off the ball work rate and decision making, and he could turn out to be an absolute superstar for us this season.

O'Halloran is frightening when he runs at people. They couldn't cope but we created nowt. Thought Rodgers did the simple things well and Scobbie has definitely sobered Anne looking back to his best.
apparently May was out training alone on the grassy area ths afternoon. Doing some ball work with a coach.

Absolutely - it worked for me - I can only vouch for the #50 bus (Basel airport - Basel train station) but on registering at our Basel hotel we were given free bus passes for every day that we are there - I think all the hotels may do it.

Another tip (this unfortunately will cost you money) if you are going to charge anything up eg your phone - you will need a special adaptor - the Swiss plug is of a type I have never seen before on my travels and none of my Euro adapters worked - you can get one at the Swiss Co-op which is like well, our Co-op :-) which converts their odd 3 pin to a standard Euro 2 pin - 3.75CHF - obviously you need a UK to Euro adaptor as well.

    Ok - go to
    www.sbb.ch/en/home.html
Fill in the the boxes on the left hand side
Go through the next process of filling in your name etc - there is a drop down menu - pick no discount
You will then come to a screen which shows various train times (around  your specified time) and the price
A little bit further down on this screen there is a box marked Supersaver - click on this
A number of trains will appear around the time you specified earlier and they will have the discounted price listed next to them
Pick the one you want and repeat for your return journey (do not pick return on the earlier screen as it is a return for the same day only)
Print your tickets and away you go

It appears the only drawback is that if you use these tickets you can only go on that specified train and there are no refunds
